I can heartily add my endorsement of the suggestions here... I have lots of personal experience with Phil's BBQ, El Indio, Carnitas Snack Shack, Hodad's, Lefty's Chicago Pizza, Bronx Pizza, Cafe Coyote, and the various 'bertos Mexican grab 'n go places. Rubio's was the place that made the fish taco famous, and they're darned good. Other places I love: Pizza - Pizzaria Luigi (Golden Hill 25th & B and North Park El Cajon between Alabama & Mississippi), Burgers - Crazee Burger (North Park 30th & Hawthorne and the East end of Old Town), Italian - Filippi's (Little Italy on India St.) and Paesano (North Park 30th and Landis... hard to beat their $4.99 lunch specials if you're on a budget), Good old fashioned Diner food - Rudford's (North Park on El Cajon a block west of 30th) and The Chicken Pie Shop (a few blocks further west on the opposite side of El Cajon).

I think the places you mentioned are sold, but IMHO, Trujillos taco shop on the corner of Montezuma and College Ave takes the cake for me when it comes to a solid CA burrito. Their carne asada is just seasoned very well every time. The wife of the owner came up with the seasoning a long time ago.
Go up to the counter and say you want a CA burrito with guacamole. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU SAY "WITH GUACAMOLE" because all the simple flavors in the burrito compliment themselves when the guac is in there.
If you want to take your CA burrito to the next level order a Sigma Pi special; think "CA burrito meets quesadilla." If you like it. you'll never order anything else.
If you are CA burrito'd out just order carne asada fries.
They are now serving Stone and Red Trolley as well.
Have fun!

La Bella's Pizza: Best pizza on the planet! Recently, San Diego was named the top city in the country to for pizza ( newsfeed.time.com/2013/08/10/and-the-top-10-cities-for-pizza-are/ ) Personally, I have enjoyed pizza in Rome, Chicago, Seatlle, Los Angeles, Austin, San Francisco, Portland, Las Vegas, among others, and I can say with full confidence the best pizza on the planet is at La Bella's Pizza Garden. If you're into beer, hit it up on Tuesday or Wednesday for San Diego Pint Night where you can enjoy the best brews from the nation's best beer city. www.labellapizza.com/Don't thank me until after you've gone! La Bella's is getting a bit over rated at this point. I've been going there for years, but the past few years the quality has been going down, yet prices continue to rise. If you really want good pizza and your in Chula, hit up Mangia on Third. La Bella's is better for drinking brew with your friends, and the pizza is still good, but Mangias the better food at this point. (Though someone earlier mentioned Bronx, which is an excellent option.) You and I have had far different experiences. Make sure you stay in the old side, have a Papa's Favorite, a nice IPA, and your life is better. We'll have to check out Mangies cause you put it in the same sentence as Bella's. High praise!

If you were my friend (let's be friends) I would suggest skipping Phil's BBQ and Tacos El Gordo. I don't think SD's BBQ is very good when compared to the rest of the county, though, it might be better than Utah's (?). Tacos El Gordo is good, but man up and go to TJ if you want street tacos. Here the 2 can't miss places in San Diego: Super Sergio's Taco Shop: Order their Carne Asada fries with a flower tortilla to use as your fork to eat the fries with. You might move to San Diego after eating this meal! Their California Burrito is the best in San Diego, hands down. I'm fat, I've tried a lot of them. www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g32767-d893112-Reviews-Super_Sergio_s-National_City_California.htmlLa Bella's Pizza: Best pizza on the planet! Phil's BBQ is the best I have ever had. I just finished some beef ribs from there. They are incredible. 3 ribs are more than a meal. They are huge and incredibly tasty. I would gladly put Phil's up against any BBQ anywhere. I've been there three times, and each time it's been ok. In San Diego, I enjoy the BBQ Pit on Plaza Blvd in National City. My favorite on the planet is Salt Lick in Austin. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fih9mNJ3b-0

Don't come to San Diego and not hit up a brewery or two or ten.
I still think Rocky's has the best burger in San Diego. Best cheap Mexican for me is Taco Express on State in downtown and the friendliest service around.

Don't come to San Diego and not hit up a brewery or two or ten. Oh, yeah! Definitely check out the local brews! San Diego is Craft Beer Heaven. Of course, coming from Utah, there is a possibility that flammable beverages aren't your thing... but if they are, there is no shortage of local breweries turning out a fine product. Some of my favorites: Stone, Ballast Point, Green Flash, Alesmith, Lost Abbey, Mission, and Karl Strauss. I'm sure others in the crew here can list dozens more... they're everywhere.

CA burrito was started at Santana's almost three decades ago back when it was over by USD off of Morena. Go there for the original. Phil's BBQ is solid but was better when it was in Hillcrest. Breakfast at Kona's on the pier in PB or Pipe's in Cardiff with a dozen doughnuts from VG's is solid.
It's pretty hard to go wrong in SD on Mexican. BBQ is all over the map and breakfast is cheap and great at the places I mentioned - just be prepared to stand in line.

I forgot the name, but it is under the Coronado bridge.best Mexican food. Make their tortillas on site. Used to go there 2 times a week when I worked down town. A bit scary at night, but great for lunch. Long lines, but worth it.

Best chorizo and beans on the planet. The line moves quick and is well worth the wait. Chicken tacos and tortillas are also the sh#$. Excellent alternative to the typical SD taco shop ending in "bertos" (which are fantastic in a different way). Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards

Sent from my SCH-I545 using proboards I like them but if I'm not mistaken they don't serve beef (ie, carne asada). Have I been missing something on the menu? Pollo and cerdo solamente at Milpas...no Carne...but it doesn't matter, it's the bomb!
