If you were my friend (let's be friends) I would suggest skipping Phil's BBQ and Tacos El Gordo. I don't think SD's BBQ is very good when compared to the rest of the county, though, it might be better than Utah's (?). Tacos El Gordo is good, but man up and go to TJ if you want street tacos. Here the 2 can't miss places in San Diego: Super Sergio's Taco Shop: Order their Carne Asada fries with a flower tortilla to use as your fork to eat the fries with. You might move to San Diego after eating this meal! Their California Burrito is the best in San Diego, hands down. I'm fat, I've tried a lot of them. www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g32767-d893112-Reviews-Super_Sergio_s-National_City_California.htmlLa Bella's Pizza: Best pizza on the planet! Recently, San Diego was named the top city in the country to for pizza ( newsfeed.time.com/2013/08/10/and-the-top-10-cities-for-pizza-are/ ) Personally, I have enjoyed pizza in Rome, Chicago, Seatlle, Los Angeles, Austin, San Francisco, Portland, Las Vegas, among others, and I can say with full confidence the best pizza on the planet is at La Bella's Pizza Garden. If you're into beer, hit it up on Tuesday or Wednesday for San Diego Pint Night where you can enjoy the best brews from the nation's best beer city. www.labellapizza.com/Don't thank me until after you've gone! LOL! La Bella's....they are OK, but certainly not close to the best...Pizza Port destroys La Bella's in every way imaginable... I use to respect you

Hodad's in OB for awesome burgers and surfer decor. You can also pick up a high-quality water pipe across the street at The Black for when they legalize weed in Utah somewhere around 2068.
The Waterfront is San Diego's oldest imbibing establishment and is located near Little Italy just north of downtown. There's nothing like a breakfast of huevos rancheros and a bloody Mary at The Waterfront.

I've got a family member that works at Carnita's Snack Shack...tremendous. I can't get past the Triple Threat sandwich. My son's friends own Lucha Libre...fun and delicious. Best ribs IMHO are in Lemon Grove at Coop's, but Phil's has become iconic around here. I used to sell the meat that Carnitas Snack Shack used and trust me it is top quality unbelievable stuff. That place is amazing. For any Carnita's Snack Shack lovers out there: Watch for a couple of new locations in 2014. If you've not visited, do yourself a favor.

Aztec fans, Point me to the best California Burrito in town! Any other restaurant recommendations would be appreciated as well. "Cheap Eats" preferred. I am considering, Phil's BBQ, Tacos El Gordo, Carnita's Snack Shack, and Lucha Libre taco shop. Steer me elsewhere if I am off course. I can't wait for the bowl and to visit one of my favorite cities in the country! IMHO, you should try the following: 1. Cheap Eats? Try any of the 'Toes. Alberto's, Hilberto's, Aliberto's, et al. They essentially look vaguely simliar, hole-in-the-wall shacks that serve up tasty Baja Mex. As a poor, white, surfer child, I used to be able to subsist off one carne asada burrito a day... Try one. And order it a la carte - it will weigh over a pound, and is best enjoyed by itself IMO. 2. Local Cuisine: Eat a Fish Taco. Nothing says San Diego like a fish taco. Okay, maybe Ron Burgundy eating a fish taco while riding Shamu bareback during halftime at a Charger game, but San Diego is the home of the fish taco. Okay, so it's the naturalized home of the Mexican fish taco, but you get the point. My point is, eat one. As others have suggested, South Beach in OB rocks them as good as (or better than) anybody. The Brigantine (my personal favorite) is worth visiting - there are a half-dozen of them (and/or Miguel's Cantinas) spread around town - go sit at the oyster bar (or in the lounge), as all apps are half-off during happy hour. Also, if youre downtown, hit up Anthony's along the Embarcadero for fish & chips and a pint of local microbrew on the back deck - if the weather is anything like it was last week, I can't imagine a better place in or near downtown to take in the sunset. 3. Food with a View. Hit up Mr. A's uptown on 5th. Originally owned by the Alecios - our local connection to organized crime - it's a rooftop restaurant when an expansive view looking through and over downtown, the harbor, the airport, and Pt. Loma. Get a stiff drink to wash down the Kobe beef sliders and garlic fries. 4. Take a walk through Gaslamp on a Friday night. There are over 200 restaurants, bistros, nightclubs, bars, and cafes all within a 16 square-block area. 5. One last thing... As someone with eight generations of family ties here, I suggest you go take a walk through Old Town, the birthplace of this great state. But not just any walk... It is imperative you begin your journey by heading directly to the NE corner of the state park, in the SE corner of Plaza de Reyes at the tasting room of Hacienda de los Rosas, a winery located in Ramona. When people think of California wine, they automatically think of Napa and Sonoma (as they should), but California wine all began here in San Diego - the birthplace of California - and IMO Hacienda de las Rosas makes hands-down the most interesting estate reds in all of the SDC. Download their $5 tasting coupon online, and go use it (drink just their reds, all made from their own estate vines and all named after the owner's horses). Only after five healthy pours and a complimentary sangria (on the backs of freshly-cooked tortillas from the tortilla shack 50 feet away) should you adventure out to check out Old Town. Now warmed up, walk or stumble your way back to San Diego Ave and choose from one of the available places - best options IMO are Miguel's Cafe, Rockin Baja Lobster, or Cafe Coyote. If you're there early, you can get cheap bar eats at O'Hungry's and wash it down with a yard. Drink and eat away the daylight, and then go check out the Whaley House - the only property the State of Claifornia has officially sanctioned as haunted and recognized as one of the most haunted places in the entire country. Whatever you choose, here's to hoping you enjoy your stay. Please respect our local ways (don't throw sh¡t out your car window - especially lit 'grits, don't hold up traffic in the fast lane, etc.) and spend a lot of money. And most importantly, have a helluva good time...

Don't mess around.
Go to Hodad's in OB and order the Bacon Cheesburger. Guy Fieri said it's one of the best burgers he's ever tasted, and he's right,
You can complement that with the Frings (½ fries and ½ onion rings).
Let me know how it goes.

I would gladly put Phil's up against any BBQ anywhere.

Does anyone besides me remember when Hodad's was a shack ON the beach? It wasn't the cool and trendy hang that it is now. In fact, they went out of business for quite a few years before reopening on Newport. Back in '79 when the Momma was still kicking and her red headed Son manned the grill, Hodad's was on Voltaire St. (across the street from the OB Cafe). She told me she ran the El Barralito in El Cajon before moving West. I missed the beach shack.

Juanita's in Encinitas is the best Mexican food you can find and for the price it's even better. Doesn't look like much as a little shack on 101, but you won't be disappointed.

La Bella's Pizza: Best pizza on the planet! La Bella's is getting a bit over rated at this point. I've been going there for years, but the past few years the quality has been going down, yet prices continue to rise. If you really want good pizza and your in Chula, hit up Mangia on Third. La Bella's is better for drinking brew with your friends, and the pizza is still good, but Mangias the better food at this point. (Though someone earlier mentioned Bronx, which is an excellent option.)

Wow! Great input! I wish we were staying for more than 4 days. I might have to eat 5 meals a day and roll out of town fat and happy. I ate at Hodad's 2 years ago and LOVED it! I was hoping to hit up some places I haven't been yet, so these are some great ideas. I wish we did food in Utah like you guys do, what a great city!

Best fish tacos at South Beach in Mission Beach. +1, but South Beach bar and grill is in Ocean Beach not Mission Beach. Thank you for pointing that out. I noticed too. South Beach is great, especially at the bar upstairs while checking out the surf. However, best grilled fish tacos in my opinion are Blue Water on India Street between the Regal Beagle and El Indio. Overall though, you're getting great recos from my fellow Aztec Mesans.
