I posted earlier the Show me the money!!! mentality of the masses. Well, a $5million guarantee BEFORE the media deal has been struck would sure qualify. BYU, Houston, Fresno, SMU, UNLV also getting a similar guarantee from that flush with cash nBE War Chest would really stir things up for the MWC.
This is going to get real interesting. For me, the BE cash level kind of explains why rumors (or roomers) of said schools talking to the BE have surfaced. Guaranteed money talks. Schools would be fools not to at least listen.
Nothing is as it seems on the surface.

I have reserved my thoughts about the MWC vs. BE... until now! That article has pushed me towards the BE! They want us and I am not convinced whatsoever that the MWC wants anything to do with us anymore. Screw them! Who do they think they are? Obviously, it is nice to be wanted... but I have no respect for the MWC. Let's take our chances with the BE. The TV contract will not be anything that it once was, but it the end it will be better than the MWC. Aresco has to be offering SDSU something for us to say. I never thought we would play a game in the BE... but 2-3 years in that conference until the Big 12 expands will be fine. The Big 12 will respect our program for trying something less safe than the MWC!

If we have a future it sounds to me like it is with the Big East.

Then we'll need to terminate some of the "lesser" sports---men's and women's. Or will the Commissar of the Department of Equality not allow that? Can't. State law forces us to supply athletic schollys based on the gender population of the school, SDSU is somewhere around 60 percent hotties 40 percent dudes - that's why we had to add dumb ass women's lacrosse last year because we were rounding up. You also have to offer x amount of sports, y amount of men's sports for the NCAA and then z amount of sports of each per each conference's bylawas. We have the minimum amount of mens sports. Maybe we should start impacting communications and psych majors so 10+ percent of the school isn't girls in those majors. I thought so. Was hoping I was exaggerating.

Winston Shepard...Jamaal Franklin...oh well, what's the difference? Looks like the UT changed the graphic from the mislabeled photo to the D-S Oscillator!

Pay attention to this part: "understand that SDSU is a state institution that is largely funded by taxpayer dollars and that wants to play big-time NCAA Division I football. Now mix in a biting recession and some of the nation’s most stringent gender equity guidelines, meaning what limited financial resources are available can’t be poured into football and men’s basketball while ignoring the 16 other teams on campus. SDSU’s athletic department needs money to thrive or even just survive, and the Big East offered it." Hello. There's a reason why this is an issue... Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards I think Marks been reading my posts on the MWC board. They don't want to hear that over there. No matter how many times I say it they either don't get it or refuse to acknowledge it. Glad to see Mark put it in his article. BTW, I think this is one of the best articles to come out of the UT in 25 years.

I am not a fan of Ziegler's but these lines are so deep, so philosophical, and so 4 chess moves out that I can't believe he wrote them and not Dr. weber.
There are also the potential moral issues of joining a conference where the more you win in football, the more money you get, and the more money you get the better chance you have of winning. It creates a temptation to cut corners, to sacrifice your university’s academic integrity at the altar of the almighty dollar. To cheat.
Doesn’t mean it will happen. It does mean that the incentive exists, or at least more than in a conference that divides revenues evenly. History tells us it’s a slippery slope.

A great essay on what our status is and how difficult the choice is going to be.
I still am leaning toward the BIGs.

I'm also convinced that the UT---or a faction therein---is not interested in SDSU moving up in the world. Unfathomable to me as to why. Was there something in the essay that made that point? If so, please point it out. If this is your own opinion formed with input from somewhere else, please point that out too.

Seemed like a fairly well balanced article to me...gave pros/cons of each option. Also, for some reason, I felt the writer was suggesting the BE/BW choice was the better of the two... but that might just be my own perception. That's the way I read it too, but I think it is because it is likely the best choice. The MW is not going to become much more that it is now. The BE is still in much larger markets. (read in front of way more faces)

For once all the real issues and facts were laid out in a clear and concise manner and I can't help but feel the information was feed to the UT by someone from SDSU.

If this is in fact SDSU feeding, regardless of how you feel about it or them, this was a very prudent move to help calm over the last 3+ days of bickering. If they orchestrated this, I applaud them.

I think this is one of the best articles to come out of the UT in 25 years. Agreed. When I read the thread title, I assumed the column was written by Stephanie Loh. Then when I saw it was Ziegler's my knee jerk reaction is it would be another hit piece by the guy who once advocated that SDSU drop football. Not so however. One excellent point made was the possibility of the BE using its immense treasury to just bury the MWC. This SDSU's chance to finally separate ourselves from those guys and we must take advantage of it.

If the MW has issues, and there is only a little dough, we may have to drop football due to the Cali title 9 rules. He didn't write it but what else could happen? This is a huge decision and I still trust Sterk and Hershman. (sp?)

The UT piece was the dinner time topic of conversation this evening at Household Azpire! The ethical points were interesting and made sense. The War Chest full of BE exit fees and a possible use for a portion made perfect sense too. A well done piece that echoed the sentiments of a few here while bringing out new points not previously discussed. Points which make me too think that the university floated this piece to the UT. But under Ziegler's name? That is speaking a lil' somethin' somethin' to me as well.
Dave L, you mentioned something about, uh... Monday? ;-)
