Even "Dutch" was having a hard time with Shepard last night.....not a good sign. Shepard needs to get control of his emotions and fast. Tapley or Jamaal should take him aside and let him know how important it is to focus on the game and ignore the refs and mistakes. Shep is going to be riding the pine a lot unless he gets his act together.

I can't speak to the emotional stuff. I don't see anything but a guy trying to learn how to play D1 ball. HS was easy for him, he's made some rookie mistakes, but Fisher is putting him in at good spots too. Last night he spent time at the point and spent time as the small forward. He got quality minutes and made a few plays.
Let's hope that the guys rally around him and he buys in.
If you want to talk emotions, remember he's an 18 year old young man who might just be homesick. It happens.

You can see the growth from the first game to last night. He has 4 points, 2 assists and 1 turnover in 15 minutes. No travels. There is a fire inside of him to excel, he gets angry at himself. IS he mercurial? Yes. The staff has to work with him to channel that fire to results. He is improving which is important for him and the team. Sit back and enjoy his coming of age.

In my opinion, by him not wanting to take direction from Fisher, not wanting to interact with players and dissing them while doing so, arguing with the coaches when the coaches try to explain that what he is doing is not the right thing to do, is acting as if he's too good for the team. Do I have proof that he feels that way? No. It just seems that he acts as if he is. What are your observations on Winston in this topic? My observation is that you're probably a Lobo fan trying to start crap. Why? Because we all know a Rebel fan wouldn't start crap. In the pre-game warmup, I saw Tapley not participate in the shooting drills...as a matter of fact, he went over to USD's side and sat down...he look like he was sulking. Castleberry went over to consult him, but Tap didn't even acknowledge him. Boy, Fisher needs to really get on that. Did this happen for really, yes the event actually did, but I have no way of knowing what was going on in his head, why he sat down, or what Castleberry said to him...it's ALL conjecture on my part. It's all conjecture on yours. I wonder did Hamilton read this board before making his decision to go to UTEP?

Ahh, the girls have a lot to talk about this morning. Guess none of them got laid last night. ;D I wait patiently for BBA's take on the situation; his incisive analysis instead of the drivel of a crybaby spectator who never hitched his wagon to a star and felt the frustration when the ride was difficult and long.

So far Winston is a dick, hopefully he'll change his act. PS he should have looked good last night considering the dude covering him was a midget

The guy is not playing to the level he wants and is acting like a kid just out of high school. If he wants to play ball he will figure it out. Looks like he doesn't want to disappoint, so when he messes up, he isn't mature enough to let it go and try harder. For example, if you turn the ball over and hustle back for a steal, almost everyone forgets about the turnover and says what a great steal. With age and experience will come success, it takes everyone a different amount of time to adjust. He's 18!

All I know is that on TV, he missed a layup and was a little slow getting back on defense. USD threw the ball down the court and got an easy lay up. Right after that play he came out of the game and the announcers were saying that it was a good learning opportunity for Shepard. The video was on Shepard for a long time and he was sitting on the bench extremely frustrated shaking his head back and forth.
My assumption was that he was pissed at Fisher for taking him out of the game, but who knows maybe he was just upset for missing a lay up. Either way, it does appear that his emotions may be a little out of control and he could be somewhat of a loose cannon. I will say even if he ran back at full speed, there is no way he could have stopped that fast break.
All I know is that (a) Fisher will keep him straight or (b) Winston will not accept responsibility for his own actions and will ultmately transfer or get kicked off the team.
My concern is that Winston thinks he is so big time that he gets overly frustrated and thinks he is better off somewhere else. IMO, so far Fisher has given him more opportunity to prove himself than he probably deserves. I would actually prefer to see LBF back up Thames right now.
Sometimes people tend to express frustration to send a message that they know they are better than they look, that could also be what is going on. You see this a lot woth amateur golfers, they got all mad like they should be getting a birdie on everry hole when the realtiy is they have never broken 100 in their life. They are trying to send a message that "they are better than this." But only actual play will prove otherwise.

I trust Fisher to get things straightened out. We should leave the kid alone. Remember how little J. Franklin was on the floor as a Freshman and how he has improved to the point he is almost our best player. He still screws up from time to time but is light years ahead of what he was. These are just kids!

Winston has unbelievable nature talent and through the roof potential. Give the 18 yr old kid a break because he’s not living up to your expectations. He wasn’t a Top 5 McDonald’s American that was suppose to come in and jump to the NBA after one year. Show your support to an Aztec who’s struggling and get behind him with encouragement. Many of you wanted Fisher fired, Rocky fired, and never though much of Jamaal. What time has shown is many of you are wrong and need to support your Aztecs when they are down and stop trying to run them out of town. I will give him a break when he stops mouthing off to his coaches and becomes a better teammate.

All the videos I saw of W Shep at Findley Prep was a Scottie Pippen like talent who is immature and bratty. He has a great amount of potential, but also a great amount of growing up to do. I do not like his attitude now, but he could become a great, if not, our greatest player ever. What will happen in the future? I have no idea - it is up to him.

You basically said the same thing I did, but in a different and better way. I caught a lot of personal insults from the know it alls here who do not know me, but I can see this ending badly for us. As a 20 year military man, I never took crap from by platoon charges, never. That is why it bothers me so much to see an 18 yr old mouthing off to his coaches, like Winston does. You dont see Shriggs pouting, or Spencer mouthing off do you? I dont care how good the kid is, I have him on a short leash.

He need's to calm down and just be a team member

One of the biggest lessons I learned this year was from Rocky Long after back to back losses....you don't turn on your players, on a personal level, when things are bad. Never say they are deficient. Even when there appears to be no other logical explanation. Those guys were champions...those champions are the same kids a lot of us spoke down about. Whoever Winston is now, is not the Winston he is gonna be by seasons end. He is in the middle of his transition into manhood. I don't know the kid but I say he didn't get an attitude over night & it won't get fixed overnight. This kid has a huge potential upside & when it starts to blossom you guys are gonna be huge fans....give the kid time to grow....patience guys

Fisher is a clever coach, a proven developer of boys to men. Remember Kyle Spain? yeah
My point is if Winston respects Fisher, he will come around. I hope so because we see flashes of greatness from this young man.

Not all 18 year olds are the same. But, they are still 18 years old. Their friggin brains are not fully developed. And boys are worse than girls in that dept. Somehow I made it to 53 and have had a successful career. But, at 18 my dad kicked me out of the house,(yes, while I was still in high school). Fortunately I had a job that allowed me to rent a room nearby. But, I learned a valuable lesson, that my disrespect of my parents caused consequences that made my life a bit difficult. It completely changed my relationship with my parents...for the better. Fish will handle this much the same way my dad did, and I think Winston will respect Fish for it and will try to change his attitude. If not, I don't think he lasts here.

I thought he played a fairly decent games. I wasn't paying attention to his behavior. The on the court antics don't bother me too much, but if he is not being a good teammate that's a concern. Jamaal has his emotional issues too, but he has always been a good teammate and a great dude off the court. Let's hope Winston grows up. He is incredibly talented.
Basketball wise, he needs to use his body better to shield his man from his dribble. He's got a lot of small quick guards on him and he can't expose the ball so much. Magic Johnson and Jalen Rose were masters of the side dribble. Basically use their size advantage and big bodies to prevent the little guys from getting to the ball. Hopefully he is watching a lot of tape of those two guys.
