This thread has gone 4 pages, and I have still not seen the only possible correct answer for why SDSU shouldn't be pimping the phrase "Fear the spear". Because it's a Florida State thing.

People did not like the "That's another Aztec ........" Yet, it has stayed and nary a peep of how bad it was/is. Most fans still hate that one. Disagree. You wouldn't have huge portions of the stadium following up with FIRST DOWN if most fans hated it. I think it's great and hope it stays. Fear the spear on the other hand...

Because it's a Florida State thing. Winnar! Considering they stole the whole spear thing from us to begin with, I don't see an issue with taking it back. That said, I still don't like the 3rd down pa call.

I like the "first down" call, but hate the "Fear the Spear." Totally lame.

I like the "first down" call, but hate the "Fear the Spear." Totally lame. This. On 3rd downs just show the noise meter with the classic rock music playing loud on the PA. Thats good enough.

Fear the spear on the other hand... Granted I haven't talked to 1,000's on this issue of the First Down call, but to about 20 or 30 in my section. Even the ones that say it hate it. And it isn't orginal at all. It has been used at many college stadiuims in the last ten years.

The fact that it's been used at many college stadiums over the past 10 years just shows how far behind we were/are in developing a real college football atmosphere. This isn't the pros. Let's get some fan involvement - chants, dances, hand signals, etc. It's supposed to be fun damnit!!! ;D

Huge difference that pretty much sums-up what I think is right and wrong about this argument and much of the in-house entertainment in general.
IBTWWW was started by the fans. It happens somewhat spontaneously (outside of the pregame with the honorary leader) when the game action calls for it (maybe to 12:00 mark, maybe with :02 to to play) and it happens not more than twice a game. Same could be said for Chet's cartwheel/splits in the olden days of basketball. In-house entertainment is best when the people in the stands create the atmosphere.
FTS is scripted and was blared ~20 times during the game regardless of the game situation/intensity. All this "Make Noise" and "Everybody Clap Your Hands" stuff is only there because so many fans aren't actively involved in the event and creating the home field/court advantage on their own.

There should be no debate on this one, it is a dumb idea and really annoying. Just another example of the marketing department ( I assume it is their idea but who knows...) showing it's lack of understanding of marketing.

I think it just needs one small adjustment. Everytime they say it they should show some hot chick on the jumbotron. All joking aside it's the worst thing they've done since that one fool had a mic and did contests and stuff during dead balls.

The PA system has basically replaced the cheerleaders. The students have been moved off to a corner instead of being behind the team where they used to be and ?"fear the spear" and "another first down" has replaced "cisboomb!" What's a Bluehair to do?

Marketing is about getting people in the stadium, not irritating them once they're there. Fine but isn't it ok to try something new? If it doesn't work ok. But yu can't fault marketing for trying something new. OK. They tried it and it went over like a lead zeppelin (to quote Ringo and yes, I DO know that's not how the band spelled it). So let's see if they try to ram it down our throats anyway like they did with that stupid Zuma roar or whatever the hell it was when Chuck was fiercely prowling the sidelines.

At Washington, I really liked how their announcer said Thirrrrdddd Doowwwnn, with a really deep voice. It wasn't gimmicky, just enough to get everyone's attention. Now, they had three times as many fans and a stadium built to grow noise, but I still liked it.
