This thread has gone 4 pages, and I have still not seen the only possible correct answer for why SDSU shouldn't be pimping the phrase "Fear the spear".

You see, if all marketing ideas don't work the first time right out of the box, it is bush league. It is a h8ers world. I didn't see anything wrong with the Fear The Spear. Fans have been bitching about marketing doing nothing for years. Now marketing tries something and they bitch about that too? Hello, Zuma!

Because some things just don't translate well from written form to spoken form? I like the "Fear the Spear" motto. However, I think it sounds fruitier than a bowl of of mangoes when you actually say it, at least in the manner in which it was spoken by the PA announcer. Use it. Print it. Love it. Live it. But for the love of God, just don't say it over the PA, on 3rd down or otherwise.

If the defense stopped them you wouldn't be so upset at it, misplaced anger.

My experience is that people come here to bitch and get things off their chest to see if there are others feeling the same way. Look how many threads are started saying "good job" vs. "bad job." Negativity sells. It's not just an Aztec phenomenon. It's message boards, comments sections at the bottom of online articles, and the news in general.
Bitching about people bitching on a message board is actually kind of ironic. If everyone came here and said everything was wonderful with the entire experience, then that would mean it was either perfect or people didn't give a crap about achieving excellence on the field, in the stadium/arena, outside before and after games, etc.
So, if we are a pathetic fanbase because we want a better and 1st rate experience, then so be it. To me, it shows we give a damn enough to express our thoughts and suggestions.
If such comments help a marketing department or any other department get feedback on how they are doing, what can be improved AND they can act upon such feedback, then maybe it will translate into a better experience and more people will come to games.
Of course, the bottom line is winning and what the product is on the field/court. However, that does not mean that the other stuff is not important too.

Marketing is about getting people in the stadium, not irritating them once they're there. Fine but isn't it ok to try something new? If it doesn't work ok. But yu can't fault marketing for trying something new. It really isn't "new" though. It's lipstick on a pig. "This is where..." failed so they went to the "jaguar growl" which didn't work. Sitting with an 0-2 count they decided that instead of taking a third pitch well outside the zone, they'd swing at "Fear The Spear." Possible solution: Maybe if it wasn't used EVERY third down it wouldn't be so irritating?

That was an accident when two people collided one holding chocolate and the other holding peanut butter. What we need is more peanut butter cups.

I have a feeling someone in admin came up with this and stuck him with having to repeat it. But, as someone else has mentioned, I think the experiment was over by sometime in the 4th quarter. Idea for a new pregame greeting: " HERE! HAVE BEER!"

True, but we must wonder if 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer the swings and misses, or to just know that it's better to leave the bat on your shoulder and hope you get beaned by a high inside fastball (apologies to The Bard). Last Saturday's repeated pre-3rd down call was the equivalent of taking a fastball in the ol' melon...
