I wish... not that it would be that much since I don't think many Aztec fans actually have a paid subscription to the site. Yea, it sucks that aztec fans aren't plopping down cash to a corporation that doesn't give any money to sdsu so they can read the football analysis of a kid that never played the game and the quotes of minors about how their recruiting trip went

What it says to me is that he is really high on his oline and runningbacks. It also opens up a world of crap for the defense. he relies oan big play defense anyway. I think its brllant inside the fifty on fourth downs. He can practice it on North Dakota maybe San Jose or even Army. I like the onside kicks if the other team has a Big kick returner why not? I think he will do it just enough to cause a headache for the opponents DC. with two mobile Qbs Muema, Walter,Price or whoever it can be effective. The trick is no offsides or holding etc. You can use your logic, but I feel it's more about not taking a risk on the FG kicker. We lost 2 games because of it so maybe Rocky is feeling gun shy. Regardless, we have a full time ST coach this year so should this 4th down stuff even be a topic?

Fascinating study. And this is with NFL statistics where the FGs are made at a much higher rate and at greater distances in college, where punting average is probably 10 yards further than in college and where scoring is lower percentage than in college as college has more offense than in the NFL. Definitely changes your thinking that you should go for it most of the time. Crazy!

In an interview the other day, Rocky said that the 3 kickers would compete until the week before the WA game and that he wanted them to play alongside the team throughout the fall (rather than going off on their own and just kicking). He also gave the standard line that if they are not confident in one of the kickers, then they'll go for it more often on 4th down.

I think you are right, the punters are suspect. They have 3 in camp, and I have only seen one of the punt and that is Joel Alesi. But if Alesi wins the job, I would be in favor of more fourth down attempts. Although probably not by having Alesi run out of punt formation. Somehow I suspect the OP would like the idea if Rocky would give his kid a schollie and let him be the 4th down QB. On another topic within the reference article, I'll predict here and now that Brandon Wright is going to become a terrific free safety.

Regardless, we have a full time ST coach this year so should this 4th down stuff even be a topic? Why don't we have a dependable kicker after all this time? Are we the only school who seems to bring in a new walk-on after the last guy graduates? (We might not be; that's why I'm asking.) After three full years, has anyone over there ever thought about using a scholarship on a kicker? "Pulaski College"? WTF? We have one and he is a good one. Not sure why so many forget that? McMorrow is on scholarship. Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

What we apparently don't have is a solid punter. Which is amazing. Punting has only a fraction of the pressure of placekickiing so I can't believe there isn't some HS player out there who wouldn't otherwise have the grades to get admitted but would love to be an Aztec and has parents who can easily afford to pay his way. As an example, the punter on my HS team got admitted to USC that way. He never got into a game because the kid on scholarship was always healthy but he did get into school and was allowed to be on the sidelines for home games and enjoyed the heck out of it.

Where's the guy who was recruited by Hoke to take Abel's place? He followed Hoke to Michigan. (Matt Wile) Here's the encouraging McMorrow article that should give all comfort and was recruited as a dual kicker/punter! wwww.signonsandiego.com/news/2012/feb/02/sdsu-gets-quite-kick-out-mcmorrow/

rocky sure caught a lot of fish with this bs Seamus is supposed to win both the FG and punting jobs - he's an athlete that played safety as well as kicked, so they like his competitiveness. Why would Rocky throw this out there... He only said when they’re inside the 50, so you're talking about a 20 yard range where you may go for it instead of kicking a FG. And considering most college punter put it through the end zone, its at worse a 30 yard difference. We play AFA and Army who go for it all the time in those situations, so prepare you D for it now. We will be huge underdogs in at least 2 games, so you can now gamble in those games without telling your players that we need to gamble to win. Put a little pressure on your kickers during fall camp and see how they respond. And for those that think Rocky is too old he is showing that he is inovative and willing to push the envelope. win-win

I'm reading a book called "Scorecasting" which details traditional sports thinking and then proves/disproves those theories using mathematics and such. This coach and team is one of the examples.

Wow, tall about over analyzing...
This has nothing to do with our specialist's talent, or lack there if, and everything to do with Rocky experimenting with another theory of football, you know, kind of like being one of the first guys to implement the 3-3-5.
This is all about increasing possessions a la Oregon, but instead of quick plays, it's about going for it on 4th down on the right side of the 50.
