It would be nice to know how much of this expansion stuff is driven by the now "new and improved" comcast/nbc. SJ St doesn't have a football program to speak of but there's a whole bunch of TVs in the area. There better be some good money coming to the MWC when this is over with.

The MWC might be wise to invite Comcast/NBC to the meeting on Monday to get a sense of how much money might be on the table depending on what teams were added to the MWC and simply to get their perspective on the issue. Might want to invite the Presidents from SMU, UTEP and Houston and perhaps Rice to determine their interest in joining the MWC as well. It's a given that SJSU, Idaho, Montana, USU, NMSU would jump at the opportunity to join the MWC so no need to even go there at this point.

Hey you never know...just two years ago our program was just as bas as SJSU - maybe they can turn it around? I like that western division in terms of travel and natural rivalries.

You don't like Utah State or San Jose State? Well, let's see. Hey, how about this? Why don't we invite the Univ. of Texas, Ohio State, and Alabama? I'm sure they would be good additions to the MWC! Here's the deal. If schools such as Houston or SMU are willing to join up, maybe that's a good way to go. However, it seems to me that some of the schools (Houston, etc.) that have been mentioned may well not be interested. Should that be the case, the MWC will have to look elsewhere. I'm not so down on SJSU as many Aztec fans seem to be. Let's not forget that it was just a couple of years ago that the Spartans were whipping SDSU. Just as our recruiting would get a boost if we were to join a BCS conference, so San Jose State's recruiting would be helped by joining the MWC. Same for USU. It boils down to this. If we are determined to expand, we may have to invite schools that are not our first choices. AzWm

Aztecfankrishnan mentioned something that I forgot to add. SJSU and even USU would be preferable in terms of travel. Travel costs are not trivial.

Sounds like UTEP might be willing to join the MWC because of their rivalry and close proximity to New Mexico. If UTEP becomes the top priority, then SJSU would seem a logical choice to balance out the conference. From a geographical perspective it makes sense. And if Comcast would put up say $6.0 million ($500k/team) for a championship game it probaby works from a financial point of view also. And assuming the conference champion gets to a BCS bowl, each member would split $18 million 12 ways ($1.5M/team) versus $1.8M/team split ten ways.
West
SJSU SDSU Fresno Hawaii UNLV Nevada
East
Boise AFA CSU Wyoming New Mexico UTEP
And La. Tech could fill the void left by UTEP leaving the WAC with:
New Mexico State Idaho Utah State UTSA Texas State Univ. of Denver

Only reason I would want SJSU is because I live in the Bay Area and would get to go more SDSU games.

Utah State actually has pretty solid football and basketball programs. Yes, they are in Utah though.

or how about this, don't add anybody. Not an unreasonable suggestion. I would hope that the big wigs in this conference make a very persuasive case before any new school or schools receive an invitation. AzWm

There has been a supposed troll on the USU board that everyone has discounted. But unless the Merc is fishing this message board, this guy called the same information and more. SJSU "Utah State, Texas-El Paso, Houston and Southern Methodist are reportedly under consideration, as well. But a source familiar with the landscape said Houston and SMU are happy in Conference USA and unlikely to join the MWC." per the merc "Houston is not going to the MWC right now. SMU has shown more interest but isn't ready either. UTEP is very likely to move to the MWC. North Texas, NMSU, SJSU, IDAHO have been talking to MWC as well." per poster For more - www.usufans.com/Forums/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=9033Could be a crackpot, but to have the same information as a respected journalist is one big coincidence.
