We were out in front of Moondoggies in P.B. and Ryan comes up and greets my buddy (they have a class together). Really low key and seemed like a nice dude. He went on to introduce himself to everyone and I took the opportunity to ask him some questions about Hoke leaving.
- Asked him how he felt about Hoke's departure and Lindley said that "as much as he wants to be happy for him, he really just hates his guts for leaving the way he did." He said he knew Hoke wanted the job but he never told any of them he was leaving.
- Asked him how he felt about Rocky and if he thought they would change the offensive / defensive scheme at all. He was genuinely excited about Rocky becoming the head coach. Told us "Hoke wouldn't be straight up with you if you were doing something wrong, he would keep it a secret. Rocky doesn't keep anything to himself and will speak his mind." He thinks Rocky will create a little more of a fun atmosphere than Hoke did.
About the schemes, Lindley was confident they would keep their same offensive scheme and obviously keep the same defensive with Rocky at the helm. Rocky is apparently looking for an OC with a similar mindset who would be comfortable with our current type of offense.

I feel the same way about Hoke. I want to be happy for him, but really I just hate his guts.

One of our problems over the years has been a country club atmosphere. Hoke may have been a jerk to his players, but he created an atmosphere of toughness which led to competitiveness which led to winning. 'Fun atmosphere' has me worried.

I'm of the opinion Rocky will keep it loose without losing focus of the goal.

Pete Carroll had a fun atmosphere at USC and it seemed to work.

Pete Carroll had a fun atmosphere at USC and it seemed to work. Did not Chuck Long have A "fun atmosphere"? There's fun and then there's lax. Although Rocky sometimes gets criticized by UNM fans on the MWC board for his recruiting, I've never seen anybody accuse him of being lax with the players.

I don't recall Rocky's UNM teams lacking toughness on the field...

PB Bar and Grill is the Michigan bar Moondoggies is the Ohio State bar. I know because I worked at Moondoggies once upon a time. I'm a little surprised you didn't know that buckeyedad

It is possible to have a tough minded atmosphere yet have fun at the same time. The two are not mutually exclusive. Rocky has a reputation for being a tough, and tough minded coach. He expects a lot out of his players, and if they're not performing up to par, it sounds like he won't be shy about letting them know about it (whereas apparently Hoke was). There will be no country club atmosphere in that locker room. I'm very confident of that. After all, it was Rocky Long that said "It's easy to beat San Diego State: If you hit them in the mouth, they head for the beach!" He gets it.

The coach that can be open (Which I took as the biggest thing from this 2nd hand report) will be successful. Sports are work and effort, but you spend months straight with eachother, and most of the rest of the time, should be able to have a bit of fun there as at the end of the day sports should be fun.
