Wow, Fun? Man o man. My first encounter with Long was anything but fun. I said, "...welcome aboard coach, is it nice to be out of the high desert snow and down here with the sun and beach."
He looked at me and said, "I came here to win and win big, not for fun and sun."
He was not pleased with my relative weather quip and let me know it.

Go watch him in practice sometime. Looked like anything but "fun" to me. F bombs all over the place (this was year 1), and I said to myself "this is more like it".

We were out in front of Moondoggies in P.B. and Ryan comes up and greets my buddy (they have a class together). Really low key and seemed like a nice dude. He went on to introduce himself to everyone and I took the opportunity to ask him some questions about Hoke leaving. - Asked him how he felt about Hoke's departure and Lindley said that "as much as he wants to be happy for him, he really just hates his guts for leaving the way he did." He said he knew Hoke wanted the job but he never told any of them he was leaving. - Asked him how he felt about Rocky and if he thought they would change the offensive / defensive scheme at all. He was genuinely excited about Rocky becoming the head coach. Told us "Hoke wouldn't be straight up with you if you were doing something wrong, he would keep it a secret. Rocky doesn't keep anything to himself and will speak his mind." He thinks Rocky will create a little more of a fun atmosphere than Hoke did. About the schemes, Lindley was confident they would keep their same offensive scheme and obviously keep the same defensive with Rocky at the helm. Rocky is apparently looking for an OC with a similar mindset who would be comfortable with our current type of offense. Ryan actually said he hates Hoke's guts or is that your words?

So Brady Hoke wouldn't tell these kids when they were making mistakes? Wow. Sounds like Rocky and Al (and the position coaches) were the guys left to give the bad news. I'm surprised that Hoke wasn't more honest with the kids. Then again, given the way he left Ball State, and the way he left SDSU, maybe I'm not all that surprised. The more I think about it the more I think we've got the better head coach.

Apologies to empire if it's all true, but it's hard to imagine Hoke keeping opinions to himself.

I apologize if my interpretation seems to discredited this thread, and certainly no offense to its author Mr. AE, but in my own mind, I will mark this thread as propaganda. I don't believe it is in the character of Ryan Lindley to make the comment that he "hates" anyone. This is just not part of his make up. Sorry.

To anyone who may doubt my word, I can assure you this conversation is accurate. There was no hostility in Lindley's voice, he is very laid back and of the quiet sort. I'm not making the claim that Hoke is in fact one to keep everything to himself, but I am quoting Lindley directly when he said that Hoke wouldn't tell them straight up when they did something wrong, would keep it to himself, and that he couldn't help but hate Hoke's guts for the way he left the program hanging. He was clearly bothered by the way it was handled.

Mr. Senator, I know Chuck and Rocky is no Chuck (despite the same surname). I am truly excited about Rocky Long as our head coach. Pete Carroll had a fun atmosphere at USC and it seemed to work. Did not Chuck Long have A "fun atmosphere"?

Carroll kept his practices loose yet full of competitions, the players competed on every drill, the winners saw playing time the losers did not. That is a huge difference then CL, who let one player beat another player and start him the next game

The coach that can be open (Which I took as the biggest thing from this 2nd hand report) will be successful. Sports are work and effort, but you spend months straight with eachother, and most of the rest of the time, should be able to have a bit of fun there as at the end of the day sports should be fun. I believe this qualifies as a 1st hand report...

Rocky Long nears a strong resemblance in Coaching styles to Claude Gilbert. It is my way or the Highway. You square up and run through your man and God help you if you don't. That's the way it is suppose to be.

It just seems to me that R. Long must understand toughness to have such success at New Mexico. Sixty-five wins in his final seven seasons? He simply must know what he is doing. We just have to hope he can get good assistants. I think Hoke's greatest strength was his ability to gather an excellent staff.
