He said only 3 scholarship pitchers from this year. All of the pitchers may not have been on scholarship.

We may have a better idea of whether USD's success came from Rich Hill or Valenzuela. Rich Hill is a very good coach.

just remember that just because you get your scholie pulled doesn't mean you are not still on the team!! a few of them are going to school on their own dime...... just frees up more money to spend on quality recruits!

cvbigguy, You've seen most of these pitchers first hand. Do you think 13 players deserve to have their scholies pulled? I can see Tony pulling half that, but 13 is almost an admission of negligence. I still love Tony, but I hope he comes forward with an explanation. How many players can the program carry?
Elsten, get the scoop.

Message for azterick: Quick question "azterick,".....have you ever played the game? Have you ever coached the game? Or are you just one of these guys that sits back and takes shots at people every chance you get? Yes, we know.....you always seem to bring up the name Filter and the fact that you were "never a big fan." Why is that azterick? Could it be you actually were a pitcher in the program that didn't get the mound time you "deserved?" I love the part about "along comes Strasburg and suddenly he gets a job at Stanford......" Seriously? Do you need to be reminded that Filter was the one who actually developed this kid? Or the fact that he was the pitching coach at SDSU for what......15, 18 years? STANFORD wouldn't hire a bum azterick. By the way, how is Stanford doing this year? Oh yeah, that's right, they start the Regional Tournament at Fullerton this week. Pitching coach must be brutal.

Azteccfer, I played my high school ball at Uni. Played Little League and senior ball against Filter. No, it's not personal. I played adult ball after high school and was not able to play at the college level....I started work the week after I graduated high school and did not come back to school until a few years later. No, I never played in the program and I'm not a bitter former player. I knew Filter before, and while he was at, Mission Bay. He was a nice guy. Currently, my son pitches for a high school in north county and he played years of travel ball before that. I personally know 3 major league scouts that cover socal. My son works with former major and minor leaguers as well as a former DII head coach. I have coached Little League, though I don't think that's what you were talking about. Of course, none of this makes me qualified. Who on this board is? If we were qualified, we would be getting paid for it. Why would you ask if I'm "just one of these guys that sits back and takes shots at people every chance you get"? When have I ever, on this or the former board, taken a shot at someone? I haven't, so please don't accuse me of doing so. I've never bashed Tollner, Luginbil, or Long. I'm a huge Fisher fan and I think Tony is great for our program and city. However, I have in the past made comments regarding Filter. I made these comments before Strasburg was on the scene...during Dietz' time. Pitching, to me, always seemed to be the Aztecs' shortcoming. Others agreed with me. That was my opinion and I'm entitled to it. I would hope that you could respectfully disagree and post your argument on this board. That's what it's for. Stasburg was brought to Filter by his pitching coach. To give Filter credit, he recognized what he had and brought him in. Do you think Filter would have been offered that job at Stanford were it not for Stras??? Stanford also has pitchers recruited by the previous coach. Plus, they're Stanford. Please, azteccfer, give me your honest opinion on this...why would Tony, and Valenzuela, be resending the scholarships on all but 3 pitchers recruited by the previous coach? Maybe I do bring the Filter thing up too much. I'm not the only one. I left it alone last year, but this scholarship thing sort of puts the light back on him. You can't disagree with that. As I mentioned earlier, this can't be good for the programs through the eyes of future recruits and the programs they come from. I know 3 of them and I know 2 more that are being recruited by SDSU. I hope this answers your questions. I'm not a negative guy and I always support our Aztecs.

I still love Tony, but I hope he comes forward with an explanation. How many players can the program carry? Elsten, get the scoop. In relation to most other programs i saw this year we were inferior, even compared to air force. except for our 2 legit starters (reed-crabb) and osully and black. ethan miller has lots of potential and will grow into a good pitcher but the majority were very weak. it was a really freak year as far as pitching goes. nadolski out with shoulder problems, black out for a week or two with arm problems, osully out after 12 pitches, reed broken finger out 3-4 weeks, bellez out whole year and then dropped from program, leary had surgey after getting hit with a line drive. miranda, shaver, sharp never panned out, crabb out after being hit by a line drive. sanford just never showed this year at all. the rest were just mediocre at best!!!! i know 13 sounds drastic but i think that is what we need at this point!!! cv out

If you can't cut it in the classroom (With all the available help around you) you can't cut it on the baseball field. Bravo to Tony for doing it (My son knows a couple of the players).

Thanks for your insight. Do you know how many players a program can carry? they carry 35-40 but only 25 are eligible for each conference series and must be named before the series starts.

Thanks for your insight. Do you know how many players a program can carry? they carry 35-40 but only 25 are eligible for each conference series and must be named before the series starts. That is correct CV. I also think the baseball team has only 13 scholies to split between everyone. In CV I trust.

Tony needs to become a full-time coach if he's ever going to build a winning program

We have 16 new pitchers coming in for next year. I'm glad Tony is stepping up and making these guys perform or telling them to hit the road. A couple good position players coming in as well. yet while moonlighting as a TV baseball talker, Tony moaned about how his guys were kicking it around - referring to the sloppy fielding etc. Bottom line is, Tony, like any other coach, must be held responsible for another dismal team. He's sitting on a gold mine of talent in San Diego. Next college baseball power in town? UCSD. Maybe their coach would want the mesa job.

i agree on his tv appearances. doesnt take away time from his coaching duties. now about those coaching duties, the main thing i would like to see tony do with the team is let them be college students and enjoy the game. on thing little cv doesnt like is that they can't have any fun on the bench or in practice. tony expects a business like demeanor in practice and at the games and it gets to be a little much for college kids and i stress kids. i talked with little cv during the tournament and he said he wished our team could have as much fun as TCU or the others as he likes to enjoy his time on the field and it has nothing to do with winning. there is time for both but not at SDSU...... cv out

Great point CV. This is not the MLB, you are correct they are kids and should play accordingly.
This game should be fun at all levels, Tony needs to understand that it may have worked for him but it does not work for all.
Get your work in at practices, and have fun at games. It should be a huge celebration of all the work the team has put in together.
