I realize that I am getting a bit ahead of myself here, seeing as how we are still in May and the 2010 season is months away. Still, I don't think it is a bad idea to ponder what may be in store for this program.
Let's consider two possible fates. First, that there will be a future for Aztec football. The second scenario is worst case, ending in the demise of the program and a future filled with hotly contested and well attended basketball games against those highly regarded Big West powerhouses!
Scenario One: Brady Hoke coaxes that extra bit of effort from his men and the Aztecs end the season 6-6 with victories over CSU, NMU, and a resurging UNLV. In 2011 SDSU picks up the pace, finished the regular season 7-5 and then wins its first bowl game in 42 years! That is followed by 9-4 and 8-5 seasons, after which Brady Hoke is lured away by a BCS school. Brady finishes tenure here with a 34-28 record, good enough to make some very solid candidates want to succeed him. Oh, yes, the Chargers are gone, but attendance is now routinely above 40,000 per game. And to top it all off, somebody finally steps up to exercise real leadership in this community and SDSU is able to absorb the Mission Valley site for school expansion as well as continued Aztec football games. Ah, the possibilities!
Scenario Two:To start, we are upset by New Mexico State. Furthermore, though some are close games, we drop 7 in conference to finish 4-8 again. Fans continue to shun the Aztecs, making the financial statement look even redder than before. The Chargers are gone as in Scenario One, but with continued losing (Lindley's successors are either substandard or get knocked out by game three and the team never makes it to .500), the City demands that SDSU pay "its fair share" to maintain the stadium or else. A fund raising drive stalls at the gate and stadium condemnation proceedings begin. Other schools murder us in recruiting, and the final Aztec season, 2015 finds the team with victories over only Texas Southern and an equally inept Vegas.
Oh, I forgot one thing. Brady Hoke, seeing the handwriting on the wall, resigns after the 2013 season to become a defensive coordinator for Central Florida, a school that has by that time joined the Big East and enjoys the friendly confines of its own on-campus stadium.
Aufwiedersehen, Aztecs, it's been good to know ya!
Well, which is going to happen?
AzWm
PS: One last desperate hope for Aztec football is dashed when the Univ. will not allow the use of Aztrak by the club team sponsored by AztecWilliam.

I have no idea which will happen and the whole thing is too disturbing to think about.

Most of us will be pleased if we make it to a bowl game this year!

I most interesting question is the one about emergence of some enlightened leadership in the City.

I am certain of one thing. There are more possible outcomes than the two you present above.

The more likely scenario is that this program is on the rise, Hoke is the real deal and we emerge as a solid mid-level school in the MWC. I don't think its realistic for SDSU to drop football...all that talk comes from left wing loons who care nothing about sports and don't see the incredible benefits winning sports teams bring to a University.
I predict we go 6-6 this year, scratch and claw to get invited to a bowl game, but lose out at the very end. Next year we go 7-5 and get the bowl invite and win. From that point on we become a solid 7-9 win a year team and solidify as a strong (but not elite) football program.
My hope is that Hoke has what it takes to Uban Meyer us into a national powerhouse.

The fact is, just like last year, I have no idea what to expect in 2010. If the team wins at least six games, I'll be pleasantly surprised. If it doesn't or it's a repeat of his first year, I dunno. What to do, what to do. I don't care much for the man, but it's about the program. If he's a success, than more power to him and to this program.

2-2 OOC is strong possibility. get ready to start scatching yer head. My first hope is that he goes 3-1 in the OOC games. If he doesn't, then I'm gonna have real doubts.

We should go 3-1 in OCC and at least 6-6 overall.

I don't care much for the man I can understand having doubts about whether Hoke will be successful at SDSU. I don't understand why anyone would dislike the guy, however. Care to explain that?

We should go 3-1 in OCC and at least 6-6 in conf. Better rethink that one, Steve.

We should go 3-1 in OCC and at least 6-6 in conf. Better rethink that one, Steve. Conference expansion yesterday. We added Long Beach State, CalState Fullerton and CalState Northridge who now have first-year programs, so we should get those three wins.

We should go 3-1 in OCC and at least 6-6 in conf. Steve....., what conference is that ? We can't play 12 conference games when there are only 9 teams in the conference. Or, did we add 3 teams when I wasn't looking? You must mean 6-6 overall, right?

I am a left-wing loon and proud to so be and I care very much about Aztec football and most other Aztec sports. You may be generalizing a little too much. Left-wingers are often sports fans. I even used to be a hunter and I was a left-winger then as well. ;D

We should go 3-1 in OCC and at least 6-6 in conf. Better rethink that one, Steve. I think Steve has it right for 6-6. That second game at NMS is crucial. And, I do think there are three conference wins: NM, CSU, UNLV. 6-6 is very doable given a vast improvement in a balanced offense. D should be a little better too.

I am certain of one thing. There are more possible outcomes than the two you present above. Such as muddling through? A 5-7 season here, 7-6 (with a bowl loss) there, followed by 4-8, then 6-6, etc.? With average attendance bouncing from 20,000 in poor years to close to or slightly over 30,000 in the "good" years? Yes, that could happen. But if the survival of Qualcomm stadium is an existential question, perhaps generally hovering around .500 with attendance in the 20s might not be enough either for the Univ. to absorb the Mission Valley sight or to build an on-campus stadium (or on some other site). I just thought I would pose the extremes for purposes of discussion. AzWm PS: The key is attendance. South Carolina routinely packed their large stadium even though the Gamecocks were generally mediocre to bad until Holtz and Spurrier showed up. If SDSU were drawing crowds of 35,000 to 45,000 routinely despite poor records, we would not have a problem. But this is the state of California, not South Carolina. In San Diego, it will take consistent 7-9 win seasons to boost attendance to the 30,000 to 40,000 level.

I have similar thoughts regarding Hoke as a coach, though my view of him as a person is more positive than yours. The two collapses at the end of '09 really raised doubts. So here we are at year two of the Hoke regime, and I think that some serious progress must be made. I am guardedly optimistic, but there is no question that the jury is still out. The important thing to remember is this; we should never have come to this situation. A really good coach should have been hired to replace Tollner. And there were several good ones available. Had, for instance, Rich Brooks been hired, we would not be working on a string of 11 straight non-winning seasons. As things stand, the program has very little room for error. AzWm
