The more likely scenario is that this program is on the rise, Hoke is the real deal and we emerge as a solid mid-level school in the MWC. I don't think its realistic for SDSU to drop football...all that talk comes from left wing loons who care nothing about sports and don't see the incredible benefits winning sports teams bring to a University. I predict we go 6-6 this year, scratch and claw to get invited to a bowl game, but lose out at the very end. Next year we go 7-5 and get the bowl invite and win. From that point on we become a solid 7-9 win a year team and solidify as a strong (but not elite) football program. My hope is that Hoke has what it takes to Uban Meyer us into a national powerhouse. I am a left-wing loon and proud to so be and I care very much about Aztec football and most other Aztec sports. You may be generalizing a little too much. Left-wingers are often sports fans. I even used to be a hunter and I was a left-winger then as well. ;D You are correct. It is risky equating anti-football sentiments with left-wing loonery! Suffice it to say that some staff members, and others, actually (gasp!) think education is more important that athletics. They are crazy, of course! ;D Now, if we can just rise to the Top-25, 9 or more wins a years, 40-50,000 average attendance, then all will be well. The team will more than pay for itself and those doubting professors can be featured in the half-time promos that run on TV to be seen by national audiences. AzWm

I respect and admire your optimism and I wish I shared it. Absolutely nothing that Coach Hoke has shown so far has given me reason to be optimistic. The fact is, just like last year, I have no idea what to expect in 2010. If the team wins at least six games, I'll be pleasantly surprised. If it doesn't or it's a repeat of his first year, I dunno. What to do, what to do. The man coached Ball State to as high as #12 in the NATION. This is Ball freaking State we're talking about. What other coach have we had here that had that kind of success as a coach before coming here? Tollner at USC? Was the guy supposed to turn the team into world beaters in year one? He took over a 2-10 team and had them seven points away from a bowl game. What's your beef with the guy? I have yet to hear anything but good from people (including myself) who've met the guy.

I don't care much for the man, but it's about the program. If he's a success, than more power to him and to this program. Is there something specific you do not care for with coach Hoke? He seems very impressive to me. Just interested.

Interesting stats. However, things have changed quite a bit since we became MWC members. It's a higher level of play and the bowl rewards are almost automatic if we do well. Today if we can do in football, similar to what we've done in basketball then I do feel 35-40K attendance is quite possible.
Prior to the MWC being formulated, it was tough to be bowl eligible. A winning record didn't do it, quality OOC wins did and we didn't have near enough of those. WAC wins were practically meaningless back then. There was almost a hopeless feeling to it and I'm sure the bandwagon fans felt that way as well.

In San Diego, it will take consistent 7-9 win seasons to boost attendance to the 30,000 to 40,000 level. I'm not even sure we'd average 30-40 with 9-win seasons. This town responds to winning, but not against just anyone. (Note the attendance figures from when we were playing Long Beach and Fresno.) The #'s support exactly what William said. When we win seven or more games 12 out of 16 times we average over 30k. The fact that we've had seven or more wins only 16 times in our 41 years of D1 Football even further proves that not enough winning is the problem at SDSU over anything else, no matter who we play. That being said, I do agree with the rest of your post.
