SDSU's performance on Friday and some fixes are discussed. Plus, a player of the game and an unsung hero. Hope you enjoy it. tinyurl.com/3a37sxfj

Am I surprised??? NOPE!!! With this OL? Not with the situational play callin, with wide receivers that can't get separation, Cooper getting 35 touches for 85 yds and especially(running Cooper in a 1 back formation) 3 times in the red zone/goal line? These are COACHING decisions! I won't blame the D(on field 68%) and bad tackling, because they actually played pretty good most games. I won't blame O'Neil( I would liked too have seen Johnson more) a freshman. I guess I will always be confused and perplexed by coaches decisions when it comes to, play to win, play not to lose, and lose just to implement your system? I get they wanna install their system, and repetition is a means to an end. But, shouldn't they coach up and play the best and try to win, and give these kids a winning attitude? I would rather go down swinging, than standing there takin a beating!

A coach has to make some adjustments based on the players strengths and weaknesses. Running a 5’8 RB behind this OL back to back times in short yardage situations is dumb.
I’m not sure what’s worse, Del Miller, Jeff Hecklinski or Sean Lewis offense.

"Cooper gets stronger as the game progresses"
Yup, he went from 2 YPC the first three quarters to 3 YPC in the 4th

Paul - Can you or someone at the EVT ask any of the following questions at today's presser:
1. If Cooper is the bell cow back, why on the most important series on 3 and 1 was he sub'd out for Cam Davis? 2. Why is there no jumbo package for goal line or short yardage situations with or without cooper? Say Sutton or Armstead? 3. If this is offense requires the QB to accounted for on every play, why does Oneil seldomly make the edges pay for crashing the back?
There are more questions, but that 3rd and 1 was the game. It raises these three questions, at least in my mind.

As a Chicago Bear and SDSU fan, I'm not sure I could have any worse offensively challenged teams....

We've asked this question in a multitude of ways all year. Injuries have hampered O'Neil for sure.

I did enjoy your data analysis of what we've been griping about all year.
It's about time Lewis started Napier. More evidence he wants to play his guys first. He only got the start because his WR was hurt.

Cooper needing a break is interesting, would he need a break in the fourth quarter if they actually gave carries to another back? Davis had 3 carries, we must have the absolute worst luck that one of those 3 was on one of the most important plays of the game. It also goes against the, he gets stronger as the game goes on tripe. As for no TE for a Jumbo package, you find a way. Take Harbaugh, he took a DL and uses him as a FB. Belichick used use his reserve OL as extra linemen lined up as TE's. I was watching a ACC game where the second-string QB would come in the game just for the tush push. As for the Oneil mobility question, does he just agree that he's hampered or does he think a hampered Oneil is better than a healthy JT to win games?

As a Chicago Bear and SDSU fan, I'm not sure I could have any worse offensively challenged teams.... da Bears could have and should have drafted 3 1st round offensive linemen (inc Alt) with that #1 pick;and had an pro bowl o-line for a decade … instead they bought the hype of a scrambling college qb who cannot use athleticism to succeed as he did in college. Total bust. Sorry for hi Jack thread to Bears commentary but the ineptitude of these offenses is similar. 1st things first on all football… you need to RUN THE DAMN BALL!! And need a o-line to do so.

The data reveals much.
"...The Aztecs have yet to outscore an FBS opponent in the second half. Overall, they have a 104-58 deficit after intermission in those contests..."

Sign of a team with vastly inferior talent or a coaching staff in over their heads Factor in the fact they blew leads in the second half, you'd have a much better argument for an incompetent staff That conclusion is supported with this data point "Forty-four of the 84 scholarship players new to the program. This group has earned about double the number of starts as those with history at SDSU."

What about 6' 9" blocking TE. Does the other team put a 6' LB on him or move one of there tall DL. Then when Mr. Jones goes in motion who knows.

To be fair, several players on the OL looked like they were dealing with some injuries (#62 in particular) gutting it out for most of the game.
That being said, no offense is going to be effective without an offensive line doing its part. Those Muema/Pumphrey/Penny years didn’t just happen randomly, those teams from that era had some great OL play.
Whenever a program makes a dramatic changeover in coaching philosophy the first and second years are going to usually be a building process. Sorry Aztec fans, we are going to need to be patient.
