I was curious about Hoke's first year. Some posters have been surmising that you should be able to see tangible progress in year one for any coach that is going to be a success and I wanted to refresh my memory if saw any tangible progress in Hoke's first stint. In hindsight, Hoke's first year was not great on paper. I'm not talking w/l's, I am talking about being competitive.
Maybe in today's portal era you need a quick dose of success with wins and losses or the players will transfer out and you start back at square one. I don't know, we shall find out.

Was it really Hoke or was it that Hoke just stayed out of the way of his OC (Borges) and the DC (Long) along with a great S&C coach who set the tone with a very Competitive and aggressive attitude in the gym. Following year (2011) when Rocky took over (his first year) he had a great OC (Ludwig) and let him do his thing as long as it didn't interfere with Rocky's idea of not turning over the ball and keeping the clock running.

Hoke was able to come in the first time with a much better OC, DC and strength coach No doubt in my mind, Wellman was the key to that turnaround. It all starts with discipline, accountability and work ethic and he found away to tap into that in every single one of those kids. He’s now getting paid the big money in the NFL.

A foundation of toughness was sorely needed to rebuild the program. Oldie Out

Hoke was able to come in the first time with a much better OC, DC and strength coach And, therein lies the difference. Hoke had a competent Staff and he trusted them with rotations and play calling. Lewis doesn't and won't.

Lewis doesn't and won't. This is becoming more and more apparent every week, Coach Lewis looks to be in over his head right now. Things are not getting ANY better and this is now going into game 10 with little hope of winning this game. The bigger issue is that this program appears to be still having issues with the basic fundamentals.

People need to understand that almost everything starts with a strong conditioning program.

Two big differences, as 92 mentioned above Hoke had much better coordinators.
The second is that Hoke cleaned shop on the Aztecs versus Lewis having his shop cleaned by the NIL.

Hoke was able to come in the first time with a much better OC, DC and strength coach Bingo Maybe I missed the meeting but I though we liked the hiring of Mike Schmidt for O-line coach?

I think it is going to be tough to recruit and KEEP good young players. You have to WIN immediately to keep a player, you have to let the player PLAY immediately in order to keep the player.....THAT or you pay a lot in NIL for the great player to come to you and stay thru the growing pains. I don't know that LEWIS is bad yet. First year he may have had a NET loss in the NIL/TRANSFER PORTAL battle.
need more 2 way players I guess.

Have you guys been following the JUCO Eligibility lawsuit being filed by the Purdue QB?
-Basically fighting for full D1 Eligibility clock at the D1 level, 4 years for all JUCO players no matter how many years were spent at a Junior College.
This could really open up recruiting and turn college football into an even bigger Business for the NFL (JUCO Rookie Ball, FCS/D2/D3/ Single A, G5 Double A, and P4 Triple A)
Where is it all going to stop?

Back when I was in school I had 5 years to complete 4 years of eligibility and had to be done by the age of 25. Of course, when I ran against National Champion UTEP they had guys who were in their 30s.

No Red-Shirting, No Medical Hardship, No religious missions, no military exceptions........ 5 years post high school, NOTHING past 25 years old PERIOD, same for everyone (yes, BYU that means you!)

To get a more accurate comparison, you would need to compare penalties and turnovers per game.
