GCU will join the MWC no later than 2026 and as told by the University, "The extraordinary success story of Grand Canyon and its athletic department began a new chapter on Friday as GCU accepted an invitation to the Mountain West Conference."
GCU will join the Mountain West no later than July 1, 2026, but possibly as early as the second quarter of 2025 if permitted under the conference's bylaws. I am glad that the new PAC-12 didn't offer GCU, the for profit, pro MAGA, university that accepts about 90%, but graduates about 30% of students, will provide some stability to the MWC (PHX is a huge DMA), but will also bring in huge NIL budgets and perhaps dominate the MWC (MBB) as SDSU did for the past 20 years.

The MWC still needs another FB and MBB university, in any combination to fill out schedules (TV inventory. DMAs added: Honolulu, El Paso and Phoenix.) I can see why No Illi, and Tarelton State (Chicago & Dallas, may be on the map.)

Thank gawd we're leaving this conference. GCU is a joke of an academic institution. Why do you connect Academics with Sports ? Outside of SA's having to maintain a certain GPA to play College Ball, they are not related It's just a sporting alliance. It makes the MW a better better basketball League. Enjoy the games. |

FACT is that CAL, Stanford, USC, UCLA All snubbed their noses at SDSU & did so for decades, not wanting the Aztecs in the same conference because academically SDSU didn't fit. Regardless of what you think of GCU and their academics, the same sentiment from some here is that "WE", Aztecs are better/superior to GCU academically and in no way should "WE" be associated with them, GCU, which is how the PAC felt about SDSU. It doesn't matter if they are a "fraudulent" University, the point is the Sentiment here is "WE" are too good for GCU, just like the PAC felt about SDSU. |

San Diego State has been in a conference with some very poorly ranked institutions. It has been in conferences with religious institutions. GCU is in a new class. I agree with all of what you said, so what is your point? State was not on par with those Universities when it came to academics. As fans, we all complained and gave them a big bird and hated them for it. The University had to step up, raise its profile, invest in Academics, etc. The school did the things that it needed to do. I am not one to buy into the whole GCU 90-100% acceptance and around 30% graduation rates, while charging a fortune. Knowing that most of these kids will never graduate. Oh, and the fact, they have had multiple programs lose credibilty or can no longer offer degrees. GCU is just a Univ trying to make money off kids that didn't get into their first/second choice. State might have had less than perfect academics years back, higher acceptance rates than liked, etc. But it has always been a CSU with real degrees and not a diploma factory. We should not be comparing State and GCU in anyway. |
