When more than 5 people actually care about soccer! Maybe you haven't noticed the Wave routinely out-attendances football at The Snapper? And that's women, the new MLS team will be routinely selling out.

When more than 5 people actually care about soccer! On December 31st this post will officially be crowned the best post of 2024. It is pretty funny, and very true. I suppose I am one of the 5. And to my knowledge, men's soccer is one of only three sports where SDSU has played for a National Championship.

When more than 5 people actually care about soccer! I don't follow soccer at all, but you just made me wonder what conference our soccer team plays in these days. I did not realize that soccer moved to the WAC after the PAC-12 explosion, did any of you? It was in the PAC-12 for 19 years before that and will move back to the PAC-12 in 2026.

In my opinion, he is not close to being on the hot seat yet. If he has a couple of bad years in the WAC where the program should have higher expectations to win, things could change. In my opinion, his tenure will be based on getting to the NCAA tournament and making some progress starting this year and next regardless of the slow start. Once you're in the NCAA tournament, anything can happen any given year. Even a mediocre season that ends in a NCAA bid or a decent tournament run can be considered a success. Having been in a 6 team conference league that annually had 4 or 5 of the best teams in the country with a financial advantage over us made it really difficult during the time we were in the former PAC 12. By contrast, I think SDSU should be one of the favorites to win the WAC Tournament this year and every year, and with the way the new PAC-12 is shaping up, we may end up in the WAC for soccer long term which would give us a chance to be on the other end of the budget disparity with expanded revenue and larger budgets for things like scholarships and recruiting. Right now, of the 6 teams in the new PAC, only SDSU and Oregon State have men's soccer. Of the teams being discussed as likely members, Memphis and UNLV could add two more which could get the league to 4. That still would leave the PAC short of the 6 needed to have a men's soccer league in the conference (Currently Washington State, Colorado State, Fresno State and Boise State do not have men's soccer). Of other schools discussed as potential additions, Tulane, Texas San Antonio, Rice and Utah State do not have men's soccer. Air Force and South Florida do. But even with a league of 6 with SDSU, Oregon State, Memphis, South Florida, UNLV and Air Force, I think it would be possible that all those teams could choose to stay in a regional league unless it is not allowed if you have enough teams to form a league (I don't know the rule on that). In my opinion, the earliest Coach Hopkins would be in the hot seat would be at the end of next season if we are not successful this season or next. I see success as making the NCAA tournament. The administration could see it as something different. Even in that situation, the administration has been slower to pull the trigger on firing a men's soccer coach. Coach Hopkins is only the 4th coach in the history of the program dating back to 1968. During that same period, Football has had 11 different coaches and Men's basketball has had 10, and that is with only Fisher and Dutcher in this millenium. The WAC men's soccer league is currently made up of Air Force, Cal Baptist, Grand Canyon, San Diego State, San Jose State, Seattle U, UNLV, Utah Tech, Utah Valley and Texas Rio Grande Valley. Although Cal Baptist, Seattle U and Grand Canyon have been decent in recent years, we should be winning this conference every year in my opinion.

When more than 5 people actually care about soccer! I'm not too much into the sport myself, but it's my opinion that we should care about ALL Aztec sports teams. Sure, I don't go to the games of most of our sports, but I do care how they all perform. At the very least, it's cool to win the commissioner's cup. Once I retire and have more time on my hands, I do plan to attend more events for most of our teams. I live too close not to.

I love soccer and watch the SDSU's men's (and woman's) team whenever they are on TV. But because I am the primary care-giver for my wife ; who is a few years younger
than me; I will probably not be able to see many (if any at all) games in person. I also love watching many of the European leagues play and can't wait for San Diego
to get our MLS team. Soccer is the only sport (along with handball) that I was really good at but I only played at a very low level. Sorry for the reminiscent rant.

"I don't know a ton about the current team..." And his/her handle is literally 'soccer94'. Interesting that I put all that time and effort in to answer a question from RiffelBooks and your reply is this, negativity towards an Aztecs sports team. It seems like you're kind of a dick. I used to have football and basketball season tickets too, but I did not renew because I have three kids that all play multiple sports and my focus is on them and I could almost never make the games so it ended up being a waste of my money. I could not tell you a ton about this year's football team either. "I think this post kind of illustrates the uphill climb that Aztec football will ALWAYS have... according to your misguided logic. In reality, I have been to one SDSU soccer game so far this season. I have been to zero football games so far. So I guess if you think I am the litmus test for Aztec sports, Men's soccer is to doing much better than football. By contrast, I go to approximately 3 to 6 of my three kids' games pretty much every weekend.

I'll say this: I'd rather go to a poorly attended men or women's SDSU soccer game at a subpar field than have to again endure what I have at the last two football games I've attended at The Snapper (Aztecs shut out in both).

"I think this post kind of illustrates the uphill climb that soccer will ALWAYS have..." Please explain to me what part of this statement is negative towards Aztec soccer! It was a general statement speaking to the apathy towards soccer in general. And it 100% speaks to the original post. Why would Aztec sports fans care about the coaches hot seat when soccer fans don't even know much about the team? Riddle me that! Thank you for your grand effort of cutting and pasting.

You are the litmus test for the question in the original post. Nobody gives a flying f*** about the men's soccer coach and whether or not he is on the hot seat.

By contrast, I go to approximately 3 to 6 of my three kids' games pretty much every weekend. This is one of the main reason SDSU/SoCal is seeing football attendance dropping and support falling off. The kids of today (and last 20 plus years) are more involved in other activities other than football, meaning their parents are now involved in other activities and have no time and less interest following football. This shows up in fan attendance in that you have college students (not well represented), recent grads, young professional not married or have no kids and the older alumni (kid free). The biggest part missing and has been missing for years is the family crowd that builds tradition and that builds in a solid long term support group. The families around Southern California just have no time or interest anymore in going to and or supporting football with so many other things going on. This disassociation of family from the the support and involvement of football is why you are seeing less and less fan support in and around most college football games here, no interest, lack of time, over priced and odd game times for most families. This is not a trend it is fact and will be hard to change.
