That team marketed itself on the field. The home attendance, which was actually slightly over 41,000 per game was, IMO, a result of the 1966, 67 and 68 team record of 30 wins and only 1 loss and 1 tie. scoring margins for those 3 years were 28-9, 29-12 and 37-15. The 1969 undefeated season scoring margin was 44-17. Those teams had both great offenses and great defense.
Maybe as important as the scores and win/loss record was the fact that we were playing, perhaps, the most exciting brand of football in the country. If Coach Lewis can bring that level of excitement to SnapDragon we won't have to worry about attendance.
Referring to my elders here.
Didn't they also build a strong following from playing on campus in the Aztec Bowl prior to moving into the NEW San Diego stadium which was a big deal for a couple years? ? ? Yes, but after the first couple of Coryell years the Aztec football team was the talk of the town. The new stadium was a big deal for Charger fans too, but we out drew them per game. We were more entertaining as well.

Also, it didn't hurt that you could fill empty plastic milk jugs from the Frat's Beer Kegs in the parking lot and bring them in.

To get playmakers the team must have a playbook that allows the kids to show what they have. The past 10 years have been all running and defense. Which is why the Aztecs became RB university!
You can never land a decent QB when they pass 12 times a game and most are to the TE. You won’t get a quality WR when they have only a couple targets a game.
With the new philosophy the team got new players that fit that up tempo style. I think everyone outside this fan base is sleeping on the Aztecs. Lewis has a proven track record of high powered offenses. We will see the old time Aztec offensive output and everyone will be whistling zippidy-doo-dah out of there (you know what) this year.
I am pumped and will be loaded up on the overs the first 2 weeks as the market will not catch up yet. Easy money to me. It thats why they play the game.

I remember having to worry almost every year for the hard copy tickets that never seem to come more than a week before the first game. Finally something positive about electronic tickets I guess.

I didn't think I was going to get in the first game in the stadium.

There should be a stand-alone G.A. booth at the north and south end of the stadium. $5 cash you get in. No fuss, no "Can we have your email/phone number?", no scanning devices.
5 bucks and you get a little red raffle-style ticket that is acceptable at the gate without scanning. The person letting you in merely tears the red ticket in half and gives you back the stub. That's how I was made a college football fan as a little boy in the 1970s. You want to cultivate long-term fans who sit in seats for decades? Then make it easy for them.

But, Coryell was playing a game no one else was doing at the time and the only way to see it was by attending the games. I know in the early 70s, we dropped two of our four Chargers season tickets because they were bad and boring. When Coryell was hired, we bought the two back, though a different location. However, even if Lewis plays exciting offense, it won't have the same impact as Coryell because you'll find such things all over the country in pros and college. If you want to get people in the stadium, you have to not only be entertaining, but you have to create and environment of entertainment as well as winning. People, especially younger ones, aren't as apt to attend sporting events as in the past, that is why building a 33,500 seat stadium is a good thing. That is where the party decks come into play. We were all young once so we, especially males, remember what we were looking for on a Saturday night. One thing I'd like to see for the students is the ability to get cheaper beer. Make it so those students who use the trolley can get beer for $2.00/glass or so. Not saying it has to be premium beer, it can be something like Coors or Busch. Perhaps a local brewery would want to get into the action as well at a slightly hirer price. Personally, I don't think we should be charging as much for food/drink as the Padres do. Not sure what the Waves charge.

Exciting winning > dulll winning > exciting losing > dull losing. Although sometimes dull winning and exciting losing is closer than you'd expect.

Ice is extra.

As to your other point, almost no one is playing the "3 yards and a cloud of dust" offense anymore. So, we'll no longer have the novelty factor in our favor. But, if the Lewis offense is like it's been advertised, I think there will be a substantial increase in fan interest over the boring offense we've been running for several years now.
I'm not sure we'll ever get the student interest up to what it was in the Coryell/Gilbert days. Even high school kids don't seem to support their football/basketball programs like they did in my day.
