He competed well, Dechambeau had some breaks and was 7 under on Sunday. The 10th was a killer, but Xander rallied back and played strong. Great for him to get that first major. Now I can say he is the best men's golfer from SDSU as Littler had a US Open championship.

Does he go on the San Diego State Mount Rushmore for athletes?

That final putt was every bit as epic and nerve racking as Butler’s Final Four shot. And Jim Nance called both. Gave a shout out to SDSU, too.

Does he go on the San Diego State Mount Rushmore for athletes? I was thinking about that. Certainly close. Golf is a global sport. To be the No. 2-ranked golfer in the world with a major championship and Olympic gold under your belt is something for sure.

I mean he withstood blistering runs by DeChambeau and Hovland. Could’ve folded under pressure many times. But didn’t. I thought at the beginning of the day that -20 would win it. But it took an all-time major record -21 to do the trick. Crazy.

Congrats to Xander. He has now crossed that hurdle and the sky is the limit.

I don’t follow golf too closely. Has an Aztec ever won a major title?

I say it’s Tony, Marshall, Kawhi and now Xander up there.

I don’t follow golf too closely. Has an Aztec ever won a major title? Gene the Machine won the US Amateur and US Open Championships. He did that against Nicklaus, Palmer, and Player. He is also in the Golf Hall of Fame.

He is also in the Golf Hall of Fame. And the Machine lost in playoffs to Billy Casper at the Masters in 1970 and lost in a playoff to Lanny Watkins at the PGA in 1977.

Man that was gripping drama, so nerve racking ... but that's what makes this such an even bigger win.
When Xander made mistakes, he was able to survive and then come back on the next hole with - not only not make more mistakes - but making some big shots. In the past, any one of the times today he stubbed his toe likely would've been his undoing. We've seen it many times ... but today ... he survived and thrived.
I'm SO HAPPY for X, his parents, wife, his entire team. He was overdue, but he finally got over the hump. For awhile, it seemed "inevitable, he'd win several majors. But then implosion after rough patch took him out of every major. I was seriously questioning if he'd ever win a major, if he had that "clutch gene". He showed the last 4 days that he does.
For all his successes on the course, financially, in all ways... greatness is defined in golf by winning majors. I think this not only gets the massive monkey off his back ... but will serve him well in future majors.
