I do like the idea of having a junkyard dog getting rebounds with how this squad is currently made up. JCJ has height and offensive capabilities, but rebounding isn't his strong suit. Rivera could also slide over to the 3 spot if we wanted to go big at any point. 3pt #'s don't scare me as much since that's not his game, FT needs to improve for sure.

He cuts hard to the basket and looks to be a willing passer. There is more than one way to create spacing and open looks - it doesn't only have to be all 5 guys taking 3 pointers.

I get we have PTSD from prior teams chucking up bricks, but Aztec basketball has always been built off of defense, rebounding, then finding ways to score.

I also like a junkyard dog but we really don't have any premium 3-pt shooters that have shown they can do it with some volume. I think we need at least one 3 or 4 that can hit over 40%.

I can see that... My hope is Boyd gets closer to 40% as he was his first two seasons (last season was lower but he came in injured). Same with Reese. X factor is Byrd getting up around or above 35%. X-X Factor is JCJ/Gwath/Heide hitting 1-2 3's a game to open the floor up.

Didn’t Dutcher say he was looking for someone who could hit 3’s for the last spot? I don’t think a 10% shooter would qualify.

Last year there were a grand total of 36 (with enough attempts to qualify for the NCAA rankings) guys that shot better than 40%… and only 90 that shot over 35%… We had one guy shoot over 35%, LeDee and he didn’t have enough attempts to qualify… We added JCJ, who can shoot… if we can get a 3/4 who can shoot over 35% we would be good.

Rivera was ok but not exactly leading the way. He had 12 points but on 4-12 shooting including 1-4 from 3. He was the third highest scorer and 3 highest rebounder(7). He was also 3-6 FTs. His shooting bothers me.
BTW, Boyd had a terrible game, shooting 2-11 including 1-9(!!) from 3.

It was his Freshman year BUT 11% on Threes and 47% FT so not exactly a candidate for SF

I believe he said they wanted someone who could play the 3 and/or 4 and that could shoot. I assume that meant shoot from outside somewhere. He can shoot near the basket and that's it.

He can shoot near the basket and that's it. I hope Dutcher is selective with this final spot, we could really use a good shooter/ wing type player, who can rebound better than 3 game. Gotta believe he’s out there ready to join a team with elite 8 final 4 potential if all goes as hoped.

Wonder if there is a Matt Mitchell or Magoon Gwath type of player out there, a late blooming senior. Got to think that those kind of guys may go more under the radar, now that everyone is so focused on the transfer portal.
Or I would take a grad transfer sharpshooter type. A 6'4"-6'5" guy that could give us 10-15 minutes at the 2 and is a 37+% 3 point shooter. I think that Compton will be decent for 15 minutes a game at the 4, and Waters can spell Byrd at the 3 (Waters has a lot of length).

My top 5 portal targets would be the following, all are 3's or 4's who have some position flex. This is not taking into account NIL, purely just the player, so 3 or 4 of these aren't too realistic. These numbers are based purely on the rumors of what other players got, and putting each into similar tiers as those players. Guessing ALL NIL numbers are lower across the board (at least a little bit) to what's actually reported though.
1. Coleman Hawkins, Illinois - likely goes pro, but if not probably a $750k to $1mm type of NIL guys I'd guess. For the 1% chance he wants to play where his dad is, maybe Dutch should make the call. 2. Jaylen Wells, Washington State - another guy who could maybe get drafted, but if not is probably a $300 to $500k type of guy. 3. Trevon Brazile, Arkansas - was originally focused on the draft but appears to be in play to return to college basketball. $200 to $400k maybe? 4. Arthur Kaluma, Kansas State - we have the family connection obviously, I think he got a big number last year but between Mesa's increase this year plus the NIL tournament, maybe we can get just to the fringes of what he'll take. 5. Tyler Harris, Portland - probably the most realistic target for us overall, young player that could grow in Dutch's system.
We'll see who we ended up getting linked to over the next few weeks, Tyler Harris would be my best guess between what Dutch has declared we need and someone that actually fits into our NIL budget. I'm sure there's another handful of players beyond this that they're looking hard at too.

might agree SDSU already has the basic roster for the up coming season - now Aztecs have set up for the NIL OOC Tournament so might as well try to get a higher level player
