As bad as Campusano's numbers have been, they are better than Diaz the last 2 months.

Well, whatever he's there for, he'll want to be on the there with the Padres and not on a minor league assignment. They can add two more players in a few more days. Will he be one of them?
Meanwhile, it looks like Cease has plenty of nothing tonight, but he just pitched himself out of a big jam. He's playin' with fire, though.
Already in trouble again in the 3rd - loads 'em up again. And once again, he pitches himself out of it. Whew!
After escaping runs from the loaded bases he succumbs to a couple of singles in the 5th. More luck than anything else. Tough day on the mound. Definitely not in the same place today as the guy who threw a no-hitter.
Then his replacement comes in and serves up a two-run HR.
Jeebus.
And there went the lead.

Padres, doing like they do, come back to take the lead 6-5 in the eighth

Scott made a great play on the rocket by Merrill to Center, or that's another RBI Double for him. I guess the only way to get him out, is to rob him.

Manny now has 160 home runs as a Padre, just 3 behind Nate Colbert's team record. Adrian Gonzalez, Phil Nevin, and Dave Winfield would have all broken the record long ago with just one more season with the Padres. Manny's finally going to do it 50 years after Colbert's last season here.

I don't think enough is said about the difficulty in pitching in that heat with that humidity. Paralta's arms were glistening with sweat and I'm sure Cease was having similar sweat problems. Looked like Cease was losing a lot of balls higher in the strike zone than usual. Not sure if having a moist hand could have been part of that. They have two more days of this crap so I'm glad they already won the first two. This team shows about 87% more grit than last year's team and i think Profar and Merrill are the two biggest reasons for that. Throw in Arraez and Solano in there too. And no one thought Higgy was going to hit like this either.

Cease had been a bit wild for a while now, but the heat/humidity certainly didn't help yesterday. As far as my pick for MVP so far, and the season is almost over, it's got to be Merrill, with a close second to Profar. I wouldn't blame anybody for saying Profar. He's been unbelievable, as well. The trade off in numbers from Grisham's to Merrill's, is astronomical. He's been Mr. Clutch on offense, while playing great defense, as well. I don't think we're playoff bound with out him, and you can say the same thing about Profar. Those two guys have been off the charts, great.

Without the need to $#!+ on other players who are no longer here:
The Padre bullpen since July 31st:
2.0 WAR (1st) 3.09 ERA (4th) 2.58 FIP (1st) 2.55 xFIP (1st) 31.2% K% (1st)
Every reliever has an xFIP of 3.55 or lower.

Musgrove literally zipped through three and has now hit the skids in inning 4. Eight batters this inning, and the Padres lose their tiny 2-0 lead. 3-run inning for Cardinals.
Padres have wasted FAR TOO MANY opportunities to add to their run total in every single inning tonight. Hopefully this will help them get their act together again now that they're behind.

Third game in four days for Suarez, with a bullpen that is on fumes right now. Expected. Win tomorrow.

Too bad they had so many LOB and couldn't have a laugher now and then. Yesterday should have been one but they end up having to use a couple of their studs. Too bad they couldn't have finished up with the low-leverage guys last night and left Scott for tonight.

Diamondbacks losing 5-4 to Mets in the 8th but I'll be shocked if they don't come back to win. Dodgers beating Baltimore 6-4 in the 5th. Atlanta wins so they come closer.
BTW, I hate that Profar bunted in the 9th. I guess it's the right "Baseball move" but he was 2-2 so far this evening and he's our #2 hitter. You don't play for just 1 run with no outs when your closer will be coming in for the third time in 4 games. Cronenworth looked completely overmatched on his three straight swings. PLEASE put Merrill in the 3 spot, NOT Jake or Xander, no matter what Aztecryan's analytics say.
