Josh Eilert as assistant coach at WVU has been named the new HC there - so will see if that means players will stay or leave ? No I was out of the country for a couple of weeks celebrating with my wife our 40th Anniversary - did not see that many guys that looked like they could play the 5 Stan, sounds like you need better vacationing spots. Maybe Sudan next vacation because they have some good 5's. 😉

Assume the Aztec's new commitment, 6'11" Magoon Gwath, will take the heat of the transfer portal. But, it may not solve the lack of experience for the upcoming season.
Getting a 1-yr Grad Transfer is still possible, but the options are limited.

would guess that the coaches have been looking for an experienced 5 that has maybe 1 year remaining but they are in strong demand - especially with schools that have a good amount of NIL money - for a while and still might -
but it is the transfer player that gets to make the final decision - on where he wants to go - so the coaches take the best players they can get to sign

With all due respect to all the people posting on this subject, it gets a little tiresome to read all the posts talking about “needing to find a replacement for Nate Mensah”. In my eyes, that’s kinda super disrespectful to Nate.
Every single school in the country would have loved to have Nathan Mensah in their squad last year. Every school would have taken him as a transfer in a heartbeat. He was probably a top 5 defender in the country last season. So the idea that you can “find his replacement” is absurd to me. Even finding someone who is in the same realm of ability is kinda silly, when you think about his ability to rim protect, defend in the post, and switch on ball screens and stay in front of guards”. There’s MAYBE 2-3 guys in college every year with those defensive skill sets. And when they have complete offensive games to match, they go #1 overall like Anthony Davis.
And I get that what we really want is rim protection and size inside, but in this era of NIL, finding guys in the portal who would be a significant upgrade over Demarshay (they’d need to be obviously better to recruit over him) costs more money than our NIL collectives can bring.
So with the few amount of transfer bigs there are, and how few of those can play the defense we’re accustomed to expecting, it really would be catching lightning in a bottle.
We’ve been spoiled going from Malcolm to Skylar to Nate. And in the 3 years we didn’t have one of those guys, we recruited Garrett Green, Valentine Izundu and Kam Rooks as grad transfer stop gaps.
Maybe we wanted someone like that again, but I’d honestly rather roll the dice with what we have than give a player like that minutes for one season.
Let Shay, Heide and Magoon battle to get those backup center minutes and let them develop as a result of that. And if none of them can cut it, then we play a more small ball, faster paced, spread the floor offense. You need a rim protector most when guys have trouble staying in front of their men. But we should be able to switch everyone (but DT) and guard really well. We’ll give up more baskets at the rim than in year’s part, but hopefully we’re scoring more on the other end, and creating more possessions with a faster tempo.
The point is, replacing Nate Mensah was never going to happen, and next year’s team has lots of talent. We got close to 5 seasons of Nate and we played a brand a basketball that suited his skill sets. But we also played a really fun brand of basketball when he was out in the 19-20 season. Hopefully we can play something that resembles that a little more. With Jaedon as our Yanni, Parrish as our Mitchell, RDW as our Schakel, Butler/DT as our Feagin/Malachi with Pal, Byrd, Saunders, BJ, Shay, Heide and Magoon filling in too.

I am talking about the Tomiac, Diabate, or Valentine Izundu-type player (10-12 minutes a game). Not the Wentzel, Jay Pal, or LeDee type. Shay (32 minutes) and Saunders (only 95 minutes) + Alger (18 minutes) don't have the depth. And now, Miles Heide (0) and Magoon (0). Some feel that Miles and Magoon will grow to 7" before they graduate. LeDee only play 706 minutes in 39 games, at 18min/game but at times got into foul trouble. Pal like Shay, Saunders, and the two frosh, are total unknowns. We typically would rotate 4 bigs in every 40-minute game.

He's still listed in the portal, but unless he's committed to another local school & just hasn't submitted papers it sure looks like he's back? Or maybe he needed bot Summer sessions to graduate before moving on??

Alger is playing in the SWISH this summer, his Instagram has him in the Jam Center everyday, he didn't graduate yet, so I assume he is coming back. All the taxi squad guys hit the portal, however, the Broughton Brothers and Barnett went through the senior night ceremonies, and Alger didn't.

If he comes back, I guess it's possible that Alger could get minutes at the 4 with Pal or Saunders at the 5? Personally I think that he's a heck of a player, but Dutch has so many guys itching for minutes (Demarshay, Saunders, then talented freshman as well) that I'm not sure that Alger will get that opportunity. Maybe Alger will get 10 minutes here and there in a match-up where speed and knowledge is more important then strength and athleticism (the two games against Air Force come to mind)

Spent a total of 3 1/2 weeks in Utrecht and Amsterdam last year on business over 2 trips and you wouldn’t believe how tall people are there and much they ride bikes EVERYWHERE. Super tall men, super tall women all thin and looking fit. I’m 6’2” and it’s the only place I’ve ever been where I felt short. Guys that are 6’6”+ guys and woman that are 6’+ grown on trees there. 6’8” guys there are a dime a dozen.

Bill rode with the San Diego Bicycle Club and was good for a guy that could never draft. His bike was at least a foot taller than mine.

Yeah, we did the Bike the Bay Ride with him way back when. Dude is HUGE on a bike. Watching his 30-for-30 special & showing him biking everywhere is pretty entertaining. A decent size 10-speed from the 70's looks like a trike under Bill.

Diongue to SJSU, over Nebraska & NMSt. Good place for him. He slots into a starter role at SJSU, or at least pushes Gorener for major PT, whereas at Nebraska he'd be a 2nd if not 3rd string guy for a year with limited minutes.
My bet is he gets pushed around a bunch this year, shows some signs of being impactful, puts on 10+ lbs & becomes more of an impact player in 1-2 years. In Torvik's '24 projections, this improves SJSU from 160th to 121st. They definitely needed more size than Gorener.
