another post man off the board, but into the MWC with San Jose State. Didn't fit our profile at all; never really under consideration. Good to see SJSU land someone like him though. Should be decent by '25.

Should be decent by '25. I live in the Bay Area. SJSU BB has been pathetic in every way, no one goes to games. When the Aztecs are here we have more fans than them. I’m pulling for them, I like and respect Tim Mikes and he has something going up here. Hope this kid pans out.

Before moving away from the Bay Area almost 2 years ago... would make the annual trek to SJSU to watch my Aztecs play. If you bought tickets a month or two in advance... you could get center-court seats, 2 rows off the floor for like $25. Great and cheap way to watch an Aztec victory!

I’ve been every time we’ve played here over the past 10 years. Kind of a dark, janky place to play … but not terrible. Fun time though with a pro Aztec crowd as well. We are moving out of the Bay Area within the next month. Looks like we are headed to the foothills east of Sacto around Folsom Lake… looking at Granite Bay. Where’d you end up?

He is, but Diongue wouldn't have made an impact this year, so not the senior/1-year guy we were looking for. Plus, class-wise, he also would have been in between Shay & Heide, and I don't think they wanted to recruit anyone who would have blocked Heide. MG will most likely end up a class behind Heide & 2 years behind Shay Johnson, and by the time he's ready to contribute Shay would be in his last year, if not gone if MG doesn't contribute until his RS JR year.

I know, and coming out of high school he was also recruited by Kentucky, Kansas and Texas AM and compared to Kevin Garnett and KD. The point is fans are gonna be fans … this kids the greatest thing since sliced bread, hasn’t done anything in 2 years, maybe this kid should transfer … rinse and repeat.

so would guess that SDSU is probably not actively looking for additional 5's with experience -
very likely going with Shay as a back up
now that SS2 has started any reports of Aztecs and the Swish league

I live in SF and love that about SJSU matchups. We always sit right behind the SDSU bench for like $20 and it's so quiet that you can hear every word that Dutcher/Velazquez say (90% of which is just F bombs)

Nice hands, good quick feet and a terrific stroke. Obviiusly long. But I'm not sure I've ever seen a skinnier player, and he's easily pushed around. He tends to hang around the perimeter, which may in part be due to his lack of physicality. Don't see him helping this year but you never know. Haven't seen Shay yet, or Pal.

How does he compare with Cade Alger? Interesting. In the few videos or photos I've seen of Magoon, he looks about the same frame as Jalen McD was when he entered SDSU, and he really looks heavier than Chet Holmgren was at GU. But an in-person view should be accurate. I love that he can shoot though.

Gwath at 190 lbs isn't far off the same basic frame. Now, I don't think anyone is picking Gwath to be a future overall #2 pick in the NBA draft... but in terms of frame and ability to be effective at SDSU... I'm certainly optimistic (esp. after he gets a year or two of work with the S&C coach, and a few burritos).

Excited to see Wembanyama and Scoot play... man, I LOVE the entertainment options in this city!

Technically, MG & Holmgren were the same size at this stage - 7', 190, but IMO MG looks skinnier. Maybe it's because Holmgren was a very physical & strong player in HS, seeking contact & using a relatively strong core to get position inside. MG does none of that, so the fact he hangs around the perimeter offensively & I don't recall him once bodying up a post-up in the half I saw just makes him look skinnier. But his ankles looked the size of my wrist, and I don't have big arms. When I saw MG I thought "twig"; when I first saw Holmgren is was more a skinny branch. But I only saw Holmgren on TV in HS, but did see him in person twice at Gonzaga. He looked bigger than MG mid/late FR year than MG does at this point in time, and much stronger. Maybe he puts on 5+ lbs & gets stronger by the time the season starts. Hope so. But both can shoot, and both have great hands. MG had a couple nice rolls to the hoop for a dunk off the pass & made it look seamless. Doesn't bring the ball down to gather himself, something Nate loved to do. Especially early on.

Watched MG tonight at the Swish. Hard comparison because they're very different players. Cade's more 4 than 5 IMO. Plus, Alger obviously doesn't have anywhere near the length - I'd guess his reach is at least 7" shorter than MG's. IMO Cade is a good D2 player - OK shot (he hit 3 3s I believe), some handles & a few post moves. But still clumsy with the ball (I think he had at least 6 TO's, but so did a lot of guys). He's obviously more physically mature, and would probably be better at holding his position both offensively & defensively than MG at this point in time. MG struggled to set picks (got a few illegal screen calls because he's virtually 2 thin to set a pick). But IMO when you look at MG you're not looking at today you're looking at 2 years from now, and that's where the comparisons end. Again, I think Alger is a good D2 player who could plug a few minutes here & there in the MWC in a pinch & not be embarrassed. But not someone you rely on. I look at MG & think D1 player, but only because I know he's a kid who should RS a year & would have a high ceiling in 2+ years. Higher than Alger could have. As most know, I follow WSU, and they had a player this year referenced in this thread in Diongue. MG & Diongue are similar in stature, and see them similarly defensively. Diongue played sparingly, being injured a lot (probably due to his frame), and did have his moments. Good shot blocker, but got abused in the paint & was often out of position. It was blatantly obvious he wasn't ready for P12 play this year. Unfortunately he was forced to play due to the expected starting 5 missing the year. That's how I see MG. You could play him, and he'd most likely have his moments. Would be OK as a PnR roll-guy & hit a few PnP 3's, and alter some shots defensively. But also would be abused at times, have a tough time on the boards & may even risk a series of injuries. That's my $0.02. The forgotten one is Heide though. I haven't seen or heard if he's going to make a Swish appearance, but he's the guy I'm most curious about. Is he more of a better skilled Alger-type of player with more post moves (i.e., future Yanni)? Is Heide more physically ready to contribute now? Can he & MG coexist on the floor together, or are they more of a Nate/Ledee type of punch at the 5?

Cade weighs more, looks sturdier & is 3 inches shorter, and nowhere near the same reach. I think if you took Jalen as a true FR & literally stretched him out 2 inches you'd have MG.

Excited to see Wembanyama and Scoot play... man, I LOVE the entertainment options in this city! Nice! My wife won’t consider Vegas for many reasons others wouldn’t - plus we have 2 very young grandkids now in NorCal so we are “stuck” in CA… never thought I’d say that. I was pushing to consider Reno - which is getting so much nicer and South Reno -especially Montreaux is spectacular with a 30 minute up and over to Incline. The thought of having a nice boat there ready to go on Fridays-Sunday for 4-5 months of the year was intriguing. We should now be 90 minutes door to Lake (Tahoe City) so that will be nice. Plus buying a beautiful house with 1,000 more SF for half the price and banking/investing a big chunk of change will be awesome as well. I’d love to have access to all the entertainment options that you do. It’s tough to leave all the great things of CA… whether SD, OC, Bay Area… Enjoy the summer league game, that’ll be a huge crowd and related hype. Report back your thoughts … I always enjoy your posts.
