Sounds as though DeLoach is playing NIL in an intelligent way, interveiwing potential bidders.

Sounds as though DeLoach is playing NIL in an intelligent way, interveiwing potential bidders. Deloach had said at the beginning of the process that he wanted to use all of his visits, and at least for now, that still appears to be the case. DeLoach made his official visit to Penn State. No surprise, but much of visit was spent around and with ex VCU team mates Baldwin and Kern.

Sounds like he‘s shopping for the best NIL deal. That probably takes us off the table.

EDIT BELOW …
Players aren’t exactly jumping into our shopping cart.
After our trip to the NC game many thought we’d clean up. WithOUT NIL run amok, they probably would be.
A little discouraging so far after a great early transfer out of the portal. Still a ways to go though. I’m bullish on Dutch and staff no matter what happens.

But we have urgent needs on the front line, and bigs are committing everywhere all over the country, and we seem to be lining up some good visits, but each one has multiple other options. My point is I thought tons of guys that fit would be begging to be a part of this. They would be IMO where it not for all the madness created by the combination of the Portal fueled by huge NIL opportunities

They’ve demonstrated great success with transfers and the Portal. The NIL complexity throws the previous way to get transfers upside down. But I think what we have here is very special including off the court aspects, plus we win a lot, have a great sold out raucous arena, a good school and located in America’s Finest City … so I believe we will land the right kind of players to keep this wonderful run going.

I like the idea that he visit us last, or after some others so we can close him. But … the risk is he commits elsewhere before we get him to campus/SD.

Only about 30% of those in the portal have committed. There are currently about 300 4/5's still in the portal, including many of the best. I'm sure our staff has a list of Plan As, Bs, & Cs, and are aware there will be more Plan A's still coming into the portal every week.

Bad enough having to compete with the P6 schools but the NIL situation makes things even more difficult

Bad enough having to compete with the P6 schools but the NIL situation makes things even more difficult Small-time thinking to complain about it. University/Department needs to be aggressively marketing NIL donation opportunities and we do what we can until we make a P6. If NIL was everything, we wouldn't have gotten RDW. If NIL meant something to every player, things like Adama Bal to Santa Clara wouldn't happen. We've built a program around guys who didn't want to play at the Kentuckys and Kansas' of the world. It is the staff's job to pivot strategically to finding players who value longer-term development, culture, and opportunity over a total NIL $ figure. I think we're well equipped to do that. Anyone who thought one NC appearance was going to somehow drastically change the reality of our situation wasn't really thinking too hard.

Yeah it's not going to change anything with 5 star guys looking for NIL or big-time transfers looking for NIL. But it may help us get more talented 4 star recruits like Saunders and Byrd. For a player that wants to be part of winning basketball, a defense first system, SDSU offers a lot of benefits. Get to live in San Diego, get national exposure, great weather, easy flights if family wants to visit, get a stipend of 2K per month to pay for living expenses. It's a pretty good situation for a lot of 4 star recruits.

VCU just picked up a 6-11 sophomore forward from the portal, which likely closes the book on DeLoach staying there.
