And they have a very quality coach, with impeccable "gentlemanly" attributes. Total class act. Though I'm sure heartsick after that loss, he gave full credit to State, saying "They won". No excuses, no bitterness, no, "buts, or ifs". Much of the FAU team has eligibility left. They can potentially make another deep run next year. And I hope they do (except if they encounter the Aztecs). It was heartbreaking loss for them and they played good enough to get a win. Go Aztecs! Both McDermott for Creighton and May for FAU were all class after brutally tough losses to SDSU. Much respect to both of those coaches and their great teams.

I was curious how Leitner called the end of the game and just found it in this compilation of radio calls.. So glad Ted got to do all of this final Aztec stuff. But in classic Ted Talk, he got the wrong player getting the final rebound. Twice he says "AG got it" instead of Nate. That's ok. But this will be a good season for him to bow out and hand over the reins to Jon Schaeffer.

It's incredible we still won after missing all those free throws. That's not the norm. Those misses are usually the reason why you lost the game. Unbelievable. I think the misses played a role in our win. At the end of the game, we were getting the rebound off our missed FTs providing extra opportunities for 2 points. FAU should have made adjustments. The FT team should not be able to pull in the rebounds. The poor blocking out by FAU on those FTs assisted in our comeback. For sure. That was the saving grace, getting the offensive rebounds off the missed free throws. It was unbelievable how many we were able to get. Their shorter, predominantly guard oriented lineup helped us get those, because of our length advantage.

The Aztecs have long perfected the X technique for offensive rebounding missed free throws. Easier said than done for defenses to counter.

The 40 points the Aztecs gave up in the first half was surprising, but FAU scored exactly 11 points in the final 11 minutes.

If everyone who can come back does come back, FAU is probably a pre season top 10. They are VERY good now. It boggles the mind how good they can be next year. I’d hate to play them early while we are figuring out a new rotation beyond our 4-5 that return from our current 9 man rotation. Plus I’m sure they will have a lot of good transfers wanting to join that team. Their immediate future is incredibly bright. I don’t feel a lot of sadness for their fanbase after what we’ve gone through to try to get here. Plus some of their fans, especially their students that were in line to enter doing “F0c4 the Aztecs!” cheers … I’m was “ok, so that’s how it is”. They had a great ride, but they are Johnny come latelys”. So no bad feelings for their fans. They had a great ride and they get to be excited and optimistic for next season. But I do feel for their players. Those guys are dogs. Incredibly good and they played their asses off. They are a GREAT team and deserve all the credit and kudos they get.

I know, we lose without that block. The local Fox radio feed got Arop on air after the game. I live in Phoenix I've never heard an interview when the interviewers after the call said they're going to find the player's jersey and buy it. They gave the producer props on air for finding Arop. The guys were just gushing about becoming fans of this great young man who lived adversity his early life to work himself into a key player for a team at the peak of amateur basketball. They kept going on about how kids like Arop are what college athletics and the NCAA tournament is about after the interview Been saying on here, to all my Aztec friends and anyone else who would listen that he’s my favorite player and all the reasons why. I said most of the season “ if the rest of the guys on the team could start playing like Arop … The effort/energy, the passion, the desire, and will the win, the High BBIQ… How good could we be? Well, guess what… The rest of the guys are playing, a lot more like Arop, and look where we are. Also, I was standing outside the arena but still inside the stadium property and who is standing 15 feet from me? AG’s mom and dad. I went right up to dad to congratulate him, but to also thank him and his family for trusting the Aztecs basketball program. Told him AG is my favorite player on a team of guys I love… and why I love him. Shared my comment about the whole team playing more like AG. It was awesome. One other quick one. I met Lamont’s dad in Maui right after the Ohio State game. We had a really pleasant chat for more than five minutes. Truly wonderful guy… I posted about this before. I was probably in the first thousand people in the Stadium, yesterday, and one of the first people I see is a Lamont’s dad. I went up to him to say hi, and remind him that we had met Maui. He remembered, referenced our conversation… When and where and what we talked about. I couldn’t believe it, I complimented him on having a great memory. Went on to have another wonderful warm chat with him. I wished him luck and said “let’s go get a W” Fist bumped him… I started to walk away and he says “hey Dan, I’ll see you Monday!!”. And then his son goes and hit the game-winning shot… How cool is that?

Yes, we can and have done it, but to make it happen in that moment is special.

I wonder if some schools with access to big NIL dollars will come after any of the FAU players?

You have to enter transfer portal to be recruitable. With the excitement of their year, I suspect many players will want a second shot at the F4 and beyond. I suspect that losing out in R1 may have resulted in more of their athletes entering the transfer portal. They are a team on an emotional high.
Go Aztecs!

That shot by Butler was just like you draw it up in your backyard, or at the playground, as you call out, 5,4,3,2,1 you shoot swish, game over!!!

That shot by Butler was just like you draw it up in your backyard, or at the playground, as you call out, 5,4,3,2,1 you shoot swish, game over!!! Maybe how you draw it up, but not how Dutch drew it up. Both the players on the floor and Dutch's comments make it clear it was not what was supposed to have happened. Trammel and Bradley were on the bench to provide increased size for the rebound and second attempt. Ideally Butler can drive to the hoop and make the shot but if he misses, our bigs ideally get a second attempt. The way our team had dominated the boards late in the game made this a good strategy. Trammel got cut off from driving to the basket and barely got the shot off in time. The clock expired with ball in the air. If the shot misses, there would not have been time for a subsequent attempt, even a tap in. it worked which is the important thing but shooting with a few more seconds left on the clock would have provided better odds of victory. His clutch shot worked but did not provide us the best chance at victory. Go Aztecs!

Whatever the hell that meant, it obviously worked.

Whatever the hell that meant, it obviously worked. I heard his postgame and interpreted it to mean to take it to the basket. In addition, in same postgame he implied the play executed was not to the plan. One big was under the hoop getting blocked back away from hoop, but 2 additional bigs were converging on the vacated space. We were in outstanding position to get rebound and shot attempt if the shot went up earlier. The choice of lineup makes it likely that Dutcher was having a line up that if initial shot missed would provide good opportunity for a subsequent chance. This relies on shot being put up sooner than it was. I invite you to watch the final few seconds of the game. You will see we had outstanding chance to get the rebound. 2 bigs near under and one big that had been under backed out a short distance. 3 Aztecs vs 1 owl. It worked out great, but if shot was a few seconds earlier our odds of victory is higher than relying solely on initial shot.
