Have you checked out our Goaztecs.com roster of running backs? There seems to be an overabundance of underclass smurfs. Why can't we sign a couple of 220+lb power backs? Look what that beefy AFA back did to us. Such backs can at least power their way for 4 or 5 yards even with a mediocre line. If we're going to end up with Byrd2.0 then whoever the OC is better know how the offense can function without a running game. Sad. Armstead is the best we have and is 5' 11" and 220lbs. Frosh Avinger is listed at 6' 1" and 210lbs. Armstead should have been the starter all season with 20-25 carries/game. He averaged 6.0 ypc. Next best rb was Bell at 4.4 ypc. That's a 36% differential between Armstead and the next best rb. But, no they "ground n pound" with a kid LISTED as 170lbs and who is probably 160lbs. Use Christon as the change of pace guy on short passes in space. I like Christon too, but can he cut instead of just using his speed? I've seen him running into defenders rather than hit the open holes. I heard some announcer a few games ago saying Christon lacks vision. If anyone needs a RB coach, it's him.

RB coach isn't going to help if he lacks vision. You either have it or don't. But I think Christon can be a very good player, if used properly. Running him into the line is stupid. Get him outside in space. But we never seem to do that with the exception of the screen pass.

We do not seem to be capable of securing, then training up the offensive side of the ball. Hecklinski--the coaching incarnation of otiose and barren---followed by his runner-up Horton, were/are incapable of anything more that we witnessed. Unless, at a minimum, that problem is cleansed, we'll see the same next year, just with different numbers on players' jerseys.

A good RB coach, along with the right kind of off-season workouts and drills can absolutely help Christon with his vision and quick decision making. They won’t take him from poor/decent to great in one off season, but he can improve dramatically with the right kind of off season work.

A good RB coach can help a running back with vision, but always nice when a guy already has almack for it. We finally saw what Christon can do when a screen develops nicely. Hopefully, we see more success with it next year.

This is all true Except Mayden didn't get a spring or fall camp to practice QB. He didn't throw the football for well over 1 year. He hasn't taken any meaningful QB reps in several seasons prior. He was taking QB4 reps his entire college career before moving to safety. While some of Mayden's INTs are the result of an inaccurate pass, by far the vast majority were timing/route issues that appear like widely inaccurate passes on TV but it's usually a timing issue or Mayden just making a bad read. Meaning most of his INTs this year could be cleaned up with actual camps and QB1 reps, increasing his command of the offense without actually improving his accuracy. The guy is a senior and he's literally never had even a single college camp as a QB in contention for the starting job. And then he didn't even play QB the entire season before being asked to play it after the 5th game. I don't know if many of you realize what an amazing job he did this season because of this. I'm not saying Mayden is gonna be great after actually getting two full camps as QB1. But, he didn't even have the arm strength this year to throw all the passes because he didn't literally throw a football for well over a year. Especially, deep balls. I'm holding out on judgement on Mayden until next season. I beg to differ on a lot of what he said in his post, which I've already refuted, it's not all true. But, I understand what you're getting at and you're absolutely right on about the assessment of Mayden, and all he was up against. I concur to that. Let's hope Mayden continues to improve and guide us to a great season next year. Mayden might not end up being a great QB for SDSU but the dude is one helluva football player and teammate. He'll always have a spot in my heart as an all-timer because of the situation he was put in and how the season went from 2-3 with 60 yards passing per game to a bowl game with a team who averaged negative yards rushing its last 2 games. If the roster had high-character players full of Moose Mayden's they'd be so much better off. A bunch of selfless guys willing to do anything to just play football. They might not have the best skills for their positions, but they're dogs willing to fight for every inch without care to what position they play.
