Yesterday, Darren Smith was teasing some upcoming developments in the world of MLS expansion, which, I know, maybe three people on this board really care about.
In a nutshell, here's what Smith had to say:
* According to sources, MLS expansion to Vegas has hit some potholes and is likely not going to happen. * Next up is San Diego. * JD Wicker has been in discussions with MLS and their plans to expand into San Diego, either through a new investment group or by elevating a lower-level team already here. * One of the sticking points is the lack of canopies on Snapdragon, which Wicker says can and will be added should the MLS choose San Diego for expansion. * Smith says official announcements regarding these developments are expected within the next one to two weeks.
It's all hot air, of course, until it isn't.
Stay tuned.

Announcement of SD Loyal getting 'promoted' to MLS and playing at Snapdragon coming in 5...4...3...2... (okay, not that soon, but seemingly inevitable).

But if we get soccer and canopies what are we going to complain about when it comes to the stadium. Maybe we should compile a list so we never run out of things to complain about.
1. Canopies 2. Not enough watering stations 3. Always out of ice 4. .......

How can life get any better than getting Canopies on Snapdragon and having some else pay for it! This will get SDSU a P5 invite for sure!

Getting a MLS team would be great for the city and SDSU.

I still don't see canopies giving sun or rain relief to more than about 1/2 the upper deck. Even that would depend on where the sun is at a given time or how the wind is blowing during the rain. But if someone else is paying for it, and paying additional rent, I'm for it.

And perhaps they can fetch ticket "premiums" for the seats "feeling" the most shelter?

Snapdragon is turning into quite the Cash Cow for SDSU. Go Aztec$! When you add all of this to the eventual $30,000,000 Pac12 $, the Aztec sports teams will have a very impressive money base to live on.

As soon as they are installed... disappointment over what canopies do / don't do will be the next great controversy on AM. For now, I think there are some who think that the entire stadium will be masked in glorious shade and on a 90 degree day their seats will feel like a cozy 78 degrees, and they will remain dry even during a tropical monsoon.

I flew in from KY for the opener and was a bit disappointed with the grass and the paint job in the logo and end zones. They already looked faded out. The end zones would look much nicer if they were for instance completely painted in red or black with the opposite color of lettering. Or you could toss white into the mix but definitely need to be completely covered in paint or whatever they use. Like this.... www.8newsnow.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/59/2020/10/Allegiant-UNLV-Twitter.jpg?w=680&h=418&crop=1

Crazy that 10-20 hospitalizations and 200 emergency calls, per Wicker, over the course of a few hours has turned into canopy jokes by homers who think Snapdragon is Valhalla and everyone that had heat stroke were BYU fans named Nancy. I won’t go check names bc it doesn’t matter, but I wonder if the same people whining about Malcolm playing in Russia because “government resources” or whatever are also those that don’t mind 7 SDFD engine companies and a battalion chief having to be on-site for a football game to provide medical aid. Hmm.
Anyway, I don’t really care about canopies one way or the other and Snapdragon IS, in fact, Valhalla. But woof, we’ve memory-holed and minimized the UA game so quick.

Not to mention all of the ambulances at Snapdragon from multiple companies that day.

And...are you not aware that there are separate FIELDS for both UNLV (artificial turf) and the Raiders (grass)?
