Scott Boras is at Petco Park tonight. (Still there as we speak)…. Definitely not a coincidence. Probably not, but he lives in Newport Beach and attends Angels games fairly often. Doesn’t he also pop into Petco some ?

Kinda like I alluded to the other day - There's a lot going on behind the scenes right now that we're not privy to. Ohtani discussions, for example. Just read a few new roomers about Ohtani. Doggers are interested, too. While Soto is not having a banner year (offensively or defensively) he's still a generational talent, a la Ohtani. Either one could immediately change the trajectory of this team … and since we're dreaming, why not both? Teams (like Washington and Anaheim) that are basically out of the post season already can also immediately change the future trajectories of their teams right now. Once the season's over, there's some value lost for both players since a year's worth of post-season contention is lost … trade now, or trade later, but trading teams' best hopes for a big talent haul happens within the next 5 days. His defensive metrics are at a career low, but Rosenthal opined that execs think it might have to do with how bad WAS is, maybe a lack of being too engaged. And, the same execs thought being thrust into a playoff race could reenergize him and have him playing in RF more to his potential. Seems reasonable. I’m a “tad” old school and prefer a fanatical work ethic that covers all hustle, all the time —- but I’m also realistic.

I've seen video and think there's just a ton of weirdness wrapped into it - He's not getting great jumps, but he's struggling the most on balls that are up in the air longer, which is just bizarre.

Soto's been nearly 50% better than league average, despite his low batting average and am abnormally high ground ball rate. Why not both? It's virtually impossible given the cost and I don't expect Arte Moreno to approve any deal. The Angels have a TON of marketing and business obligations tied up in the Pacific Rim. It would largely kill their franchise. nypost.com/2022/07/28/angels-entertaining-possible-shohei-ohtani-blockbuster/Yeah, it’s the Post… but this report suggests that the Angels are listening…

OK, playing Devil's Advocate here... Juan Soto is only 23. Is it at all possible that he is a flash in the pan who settles in as just an average player by 26 or 27 years old? We've seen it before. Guys get hot, have a world class year or two, then the league adjusts, and they come back to earth. Until he's played at that top level for more than a couple years (he's already cooled down, his batting average is below average this year) is it really worth risking the future of your franchise on this guy? (If they went all in - trading away key prospects and signing him to a long term, absurd money deal.) If the Padres do trade for him (giving away multiple key prospects), and if they do then sign this guy to an extension, are you really confident that a kid like that (age wise) is going to keep it together at that level for another decade? I'm just so used to everything blowing up in the Padres' faces that I can't believe that a move like this will work out the way they think it will. I Just have a horrible feeling (based on how things always work out for the Padres) that this will end up ruining the team once we've lost Machado and Tatis. How many prospects can we give up and still field a legit contender 5 or 6 years from now? This is where the Dodgers have a huge advantage. If they made a deal like this and it went bad it wouldn't hurt them one bit long term. They'd just reload. The Padres won't be able to do that. If there is a bad decision to be made here, we can count on the Padres to make it… kind of in the If it can happen it will happen department.

I hate giving up Robert Hasell. Future star. Future batting champion. I’d rather lose McKenzie Gore. Having said that, whoever gets Soto will be in the playoffs and the Pares won’t be.

Unfortunately, Hasell III (as well as a few more top prospects AND an everyday player or two) might just be the price a team ends up paying for someone like a Soto or an Ohtani. And then it's a total mega$$$ crapshoot in terms of signing them to a new contract in two more years …

I don't believe Kevin further than I can throw him, but this is the mark of an unserious franchise.

Soto is NOT having a great year. A decent year with a good amount of home runs, but his batting average is below average so he ain't carrying anyone to the playoffs. He's playing like a solid role player, but not a difference maker.

Ignore the batting average, it's not 1940.

LOL His stats are not worth giving up the farm to get him. He's WAY down from the previous two years. It seems like you and everyone else is caught up in those two great years he had, but they may have been the absolute peak of his career. Oh, and batting average is still the most basic and most important stat there is. You can't score runs if you can't get on base, and you're not going to drive in a ton of runs with a .240 average. Downplaying one of the most basic, fundamental stats in baseball is foolish. Is it worth giving up the future to get him? Will he alone make the difference that brings a World Series title to San Diego? (Will adding him give the Padres a better than 50/50 chance of winning the World Series as opposed to any other player they have or could get?) If not, he's not worth the price. If the Padres give up a ton to get him this team is going to SUCK in 3 or 4 years. They're going to need that farm system to provide replacements for Machado and Tatis, as well as filling all the holes on this roster.

I would give whatever it takes for Ohtani. Petco preventing you from hitting? Well dude can still pitch at an elite level.
