Best comments:
Manfred should punish the Astros by forcing them to take on Hosmer’s contract.
He should make Trevor Bauer take on Hosmer’s contract.

Hosmer’s contract is going to be an obstacle in most trades.
Maybe just keep him around, (he could have a huge September) and bring in a top shelf starting pitcher. With Blake Snell’s ballooning ERA and WHIP and an overextended bullpen, The Padres need more pitching.

We need starting pitching much more then another bat right now. Our starting pitching has woefully underperformed this year. Our offense is better with Frazier. That was exactly why I didn't see the Gallo deal working out after we got Frazier. At least now we can focus on getting a starting pitcher, and hey - Gibson is still available with the Rangers. Scherzer is still there. Lots of options.

This is one of the worst offenses against left handed pitching.

Focus on getting a good pitcher, and a hitter secondary. Of course, if there's too good of a deal to pass up on a hitter, then jump on it.

The Padres were willing to send 45 million dollars of Hosmer's remaining money owed to the Rangers and it ultimately wasn't enough. Texas would have been on the hook for something shy of 20 million. The Padres are already over the CBT and are highly unlikely to do that two years in a row as the penalties are extreme for repeat offenders. There's some internal worry that the team is in a weird spot with Hosmer's comfort level now knowing how hard the team tried to move him.

A 65% repeater tax makes it practically impossible when it's a Scherzer level contract. From clubhouse leader to albatross… poor Hosmer. So what deals can be made short of clearing Hosmer and his contract liability. If the Padres were willing to send $45m along with him, and no taker … that's a big red flag. And then there's the team and clubhouse climate. See if anything improves in Seattle. Their clubhouse is seething right now. www.seattletimes.com/sports/mariners/mariners-trade-kendall-graveman-rafael-montero-to-astros-for-abraham-toro-joe-smith/ I think the best the Padres. can hope for is that maybe there's a way to do a 3 or 4 way with Hosmer somehow finding his way back to Kansas City, where he's still sorely missed (by fans, anyway).

It's worth noting that the team that acquires Scherzer owes him nothing this year.

Deal has been agreed to in principle. Just waiting on the particulars.

And for Scherzer to waive his no-trade rights … but he did say he'd be willing to move to the west coast. There was also some mention of going to a team that would consider him more than a rental - so maybe a longer term deal will be a contingency.

Already agreed to waive it, through the Nats beat reporter.

Not too difficult They're close to getting Sherzer, apparently. Maybe they were focused on both at the same time.
