Yep, 5:55. A little disappointed they're not in the National Division, but oh well. Bishop Gorman plays at the same time at Torrey, and DeMatha right after. DeMatha dropped (Huge bummer, as they may have been the best team in it), but Lincoln is now in the National Division, playing the host team at Torrey Pines tomorrow. Definite bummer about DM. I show Lincoln playing this afternoon at 2:45 against Hillcrest at TP, and TP playing Bishop Gorman at 7:30. theholidayclassic.org/daily-schedules

To play as a Frosh, he has gotta play D. Thanks in advance. He guarded Hillcrest's 7'1" center for long stretches of the game. I wouldn't call him a lockdown defender, but he's willing to defend multiple positions and you can see flashes of what could be an above average on ball defender. His basketball IQ is really high, considering he's so young for his class. He's just a smooth, naturally gifted athlete. He hit a three from Encinitas today that just had me shaking my head.

SDUT on Byrd: 24 points, 5 of 11 shooting on 3s, seven rebounds, seven assists, three steals and two blocks in an 86-60 win... He guarded Hillcrest 7-1 junior center Dennis Evans, who is a SDSU recruiting interest.

Anybody know who the "4 SDSU players" sitting in the stands were?

Says he will get a significant ratings bump. He’s already 89th on 247, 161st in composite.

Great article by Zeigler - who has also coached some HS here in the San Diego area .
But most important for Bryd is that his father was also a HS coach - so great opportunity for him to have a great over all outlook on his team
Do look forward to hearing some of the song _ Bryd is the Word . or maybe it was Bird , Bird , Bird is the word think done by the Trashmen ?

I went to the late game he played in on Wednesday and was quite underwhelmed by his play and attitude. For the majority of them game, he didn’t hustle, didn’t put in 100% effort, and the look in his face when things didn’t go his way…he looked like a two year old who was about to have a tantrum! . He didn’t even pay attention during timeouts when the coach was going over plays. There were glimpses of talent so you could see he could be special, but what I saw was any indication, he’s got some serious maturing to do.
I also watched the Family Faith Academy vs Coronado (from NV). Coronado had a couple of D1 players and FF had 3, but I really seemed to me their whole team should be getting at least some looks. # 13 had 24 pts to I believe lead their team in scoring (more than their Ole Miss bound guard), played hard on defense (which their entire team did) and could jump out of the gym. He looked to only be 6’ or 6’ 1” although he was listed at 6’ 4” so maybe that’s why he hasn’t gotten offers but maybe that’s also why he played with a chip on his shoulder.

I would caution reading anything into body language/attitude as an outsider. I witnessed his first game and saw the exact opposite.

Jones is the kid with Faith Family. He's listed at 6'4, but probably 6'2+ and yes, he's a stud. Incredible athlete. Surprised not to find him among the more highly touted BB recruits, but he's thick enough he may be a stud football player as well? Dude looks like a linebacker. But Caldwell, their Ole Miss bound player, is easily a better all around player & arguably the best player in the tournament overall. It'd be between him, Isaacs of Coronado (going to Texas Tech), Mahaney of Campolindo (St Mary's) & Richardson of Bishop Gorman (only a soph). They lost to Bishop Gorman in the final last night in OT. I'd say that game had a combined 12-13 D1 players on their rosters, including 5-6 P6-caliber players. An exceptional game, among the best finals I've seen at Torrey (& I've gone nearly every year the past 12 years). BG has a kid named Darrion Williams who's only getting interest from 2nd tier schools, but IMO that's a mistake. He was MVP of the Tark Classic & again at Torrey Pines, and at 6'7 is very similar to Matt Mitchell. Kind of a tweener - not really a guard, but not athletic enough to play inside at a P6. But the kid has a high IQ & can flat out play. I'd love to see the Aztecs look harder at him - he'd come if offered, and if nothing else get their foot in the door at BG for when Richardson, Mobley & Nwuili (who's just 14!) graduate! Re: Miles, couldn't disagree more re: his mental maturity. His play, aside from the 1st game, wasn't all that great, but he's a project so not that much of a surprise. He's clearly the best player on his team, and his court vision & decision making are exceptional for a kid his age. Does have a ways to go when it comes to ball handling, D & consistency with his shot. IMO one of his biggest flaws, at the HS level, is he's too unselfish. He should be putting up 15+ shots a game, not 7-8. He led his team to a 5th place finish & they were far from the 5th best team there, and his play & leadership is a main reason why they managed to finish 5th.

In their first game against Hillcrest (which was a schedule change), he deferred way too often. Coaches had to encourage him to shoot more, especially against the Hillcrest zone. He's such a good passer against a zone that it's a bit of a Catch-22.

Went to Torrey Pines to watch this young man play after the UT article. Every thing talked about here was very true. But, I walked away with one thought, "How does Dutcher and his crew do it." I came away with great respect in their recruiting prowess. OMG High school teams, to me, are like watching a box of cats gone rouge. To pick one and project them into the future is an awesome feat. Dutcher does this with a very high degree of accuracy. WOW

I came away with great respect in their recruiting prowess. OMG High school teams, to me, are like watching a box of cats gone rouge. To pick one and project them into the future is an awesome feat. Dutcher does this with a very high degree of accuracy. WOW The one thing they do, besides emphasizing character, is they recruit based on a players ceiling vs. where they see them over the next 2 years. Hence why often we'll have younger signees than many. Dutch is confident enough in our ability to recruit the portal for quicker fixes that he doesn't even worry about where a HS recruit will be in year 1 or even year 2, especially offensively. The USC's of the world can't do that. They know if a kid isn't in the rotation in year 1 & especially by year 2 they're likely to bolt. As a fan, or at least in my case, it's harder for me to see the ceiling of a player, or should I say it's harder to root for SDSU to recruit a kid I don't think will contribute until year 2 or 3. I look at the more "college ready" players at these tournaments, like a Williams for Bishop Gorman who's more like Matt Mitchell, and say "why not him?", because he's the player making the big plays NOW!! But they see that & probably see him as nearly reaching his peak, and who wouldn't be anywhere near the player in year 3 that Byrd will be. But agree - they do a fabulous job of identifying targets early & reeling them in..

The drawback is you may get a Che Evans who gets tired of not playing and transfers out before realizing the development necessary to get minutes. This could become more of an issue with SDSU than other schools due to the requirement of playing tenacious D, 100% of the time.

Was a Che supporter - did not totally understand why he would leave before the Winter break . He could have earned some PT and then make a better decision - would guess that he was wondering when or if he could get a chance . There would have been minutes . As we have easily seen . Also wonder if he had given it a try if he would be playing as a reserve now ? Why transfer to a UTEP type school when he should go to a JC to finish the academic work then have time to see what is available for 22-23 season - a lot more choices . Realize it is hard to go from a top 100 player to being close to the last player on your team .
Keshad is showing that sticking it out does have its rewards if you earn it.
But could see KD leaving if he does not earn enough Minutes this season .Guys think they are ready to step right in and many times they still have a lot to learn - especially when they are required to play defense or limit their TO's
