When's the latest kids can transfer and still play this year. Because if Baker comes in and starts to look really good this summer, there might be other players see that their own playing time might be affected enough that they might want to go somewhere they'll play more. I'm thinking Keshad and Evans primarily. I hope that Keshad has worked on his shooting enough to play significant minutes. We're very crowded at the 1 through 3 positions and I'm assuming Keshad grabs #4 from Arop and/or Tomiac.
With Diabate here, Dutcher could play two bigs at a time more without worrying about fouls so much. That puts Keshad back to the 3. It's great having too many good players but I'll be surprised if someone doesn't leave this roster. I trust our coaching staff to know who's better. I always thought Ed Chang was better than he actually turned out to be when he left. Same with Joel Mensah.

I already got love for this young man and his team first attitude and style of play. He is going to do great here.

Great article. Question about the jersey # in the Tweet.
Is #44 retired? It was Michael Cage's number. If not, I hope Baker has the impact at SDSU Cage did.

Only Kawhi has had his number retired - #15. Cage was a great Aztec, and solid NBA player. I bet his number would have been retired if his teams had ever won any tournament games - not that it was his fault they didn't, but you know what I mean.

According to the media guide ... three numbers have been retired #15, #22 (Milton Phelps) and #44. Now just because a number is retired doesn't mean it's unused. Ben Perez used #15 in 2016. A handful of people have used #22 most recently, Malachi Flynn No one has used #44 since Cage. I didn't notice this before the interview. It would have been a great question to ask.

You must be in the portal by July 1st this year to be eligible for the 1-time transfer exemption (i.e. to play THIS year), but if someone's willing to sit out a year they can transfer as late as September, assuming they're academically eligible & get into the new place in time. With off-season workout starting shortly I'd expect we'd have a "final" roster set in the next 2-3 weeks.

Does a player have to be in Summer School to be able to practice with the Aztec coaching staff ?
Think Chad Baker will be a welcome addition to the Aztec team . Great to get a player with 4 years remaining but having 1 year under his belt . Is challenging for a younger player to transfer in and learn all the aspects of both the Defense and Offense to jump right in as a starter but you never know .
Will be interesting battles to see who emerges as possible starters - with Trey - PG , and Matt Bradley( 2 or 3 ) two definite starters and Nathan very likely to start at the 5 .
So strong competition between Che, Keshad , KD , Chad , Adam , AG , Joshua at the 2 , 3 or 4 positions , nice to have guys that can play multiple positions . Experience does help -learning the Aztec defense can definitely be challenging and does help a guy get the PT . So even if you can score like crazy you also have to be there on defense and rebounding . In addition it is a five man starting lineup so coaches may blend what unit of 5 performs best on the court together . plus we know it is not always who starts the game but who is there at crunch time .- Chad with 81% FT certainly helps when we hit the bonus situation but that is usually closer to the end of a half .
Would also say that it is time that College basketball allow players to have the numerals , 6, 7,8, 9 on their jerseys . Yes understand college does it so the refs can hand signal who the foul is on but why not just let the ref tell the scorers table ? or mic them up as they do for football ?

I think anybody who wants to ref an NCAA game should be forced to have 4 add'l fingers surgically attached to one of their hands. That's far more practical than going to the trouble of mic'ing them up each game.

would hope that they should be able to walk over to the scorers table and tell them the number of the player who made the foul - this is the lamest rule in basketball and should be changed -

Or, even easier, how about the refs just signal any number under ten with their wrists crossed. I know, not exactly high tech, and the person at the scoring table would have to be able to count, but certainly someone could have thought of this before I did.

The major point is to allow numbers from 0 to 99 be worn by players -
the refs can walk over to the scorers table and hope they can communicate it correctly rather then a quick hand motion - unbelievably archaic . About the easiest rule change they can make

All the have to do is signal lower or higher numbers parallel instead of perpendicular
