It's starting to look like we will have a starting team with at least 3 Johnsons, that's a lot of Johnsons. Who nose by then we may have more! Couple more Johnsons

The last two guys from WA state — Jalen McDaniels and Malachi Flynn — are in the NBA, which no doubt was a selling point to Johnson to come to SDSU. Great point.

I doubt any of the freshman get big time minutes next year, but 1 or 2 of them can establish a role as a reserve. I'm very excited for the class long term but some of the expectations of what they will do right away is a bit much. Agree. From the video I've seen of Johnson, the only thing he does better than Butler did as a H.S. player is shoot from distance. Butler is so quick and strong off the dribble. He also was very effective stealing the ball on D. I love Butler… he is the kind of guy you need on a team… but he turns the ball over way too much… if he has the kind of development that can be expected from 1st to 2nd year then he could be the starter as a junior… if he doesn’t get his turnovers under control then the job will be open… Also, folks are not giving Koren enough credit… he has matured a bunch over the last six months amd really begun to dominate the competition… he will be a special player for State.

Butler had turnovers as a result of his uncanny confidence as a true freshman. He will undoubtedly improve in that one area of weakness going into year 2. I'm too lazy to do the calculations but I think he may have had more steals/minute than anyone on the team. He often had the ability to change the flow of the game (in a positive way) when he came in by driving for layups and getting steals on the other end. He is a starter this year or next and a future pro at some level.

You're correct about Butler, here are the stats Steals per 40 minute-game 2.77 Butler 2.14 Pulliam 2.01 Arop 1.93 Mitchell 1.55 Tomaic 1.53 Gomez 1.37 Schakel 1.11 Seiko 1.07 Mensah 0.75Johnson
Playing Arop, Pulliam and Butler at the same time is like playing against a swarm of hornets.

Butler has more athleticism the K Johnson - Butler has NBA quickness. Whether or not he puts in all together to make the NBA is another story. But I see K Johnson as an overseas pro, not NBA athleticism. K Johnson reminds me of Pulliam. Pulliam as a freshman would not have gotten minutes, or Reserve minutes at best.
Byrd in the other hand (by far and away) has the most potential of all 3 players in this class - and I have to disagree, I think that Byrd starts from day one. He has NBA written all over him - and it's not just his insane length and athleticism, or the fact that hes still younger then most players and still growing, it's that he combines his athleticism with an incredible amount of talent with the ball.

He is a starter this year or next and a future pro at some level. You are correct… his usage level was second only to Matt for those in the regular rotation. Part of his turnover issue was that he had such a high usage level, most of that was his instinct to get involved on the offensive end. He also had a 22% assist rate which was second behind Trey. His total rebounding percentage of 8.2% is strong for a PG. Lamont’s steal percentage of 4.1% led the team and was significantly better than Trey and AG both around 3.0%. Finally, his Free Throw rate was pretty good. There is a lot to like and build upon. I really hope he makes the 1st year to 2nd year jump that a lot of players make. The only point I would make is that Dutch will not turn the team over to a PG that has a TO% over 20%, he expects them to be between 10% and 18%. He has every chance to start as a junior… but folks don’t understand how good Koren is… it will be hard to keep him on the bench…

Usually the biggest jump for a college player is in the second year and I expect Butler to do this. Think about this you have a kid that I believe has NBA type quickness, is a really good defender, good rebounder for his position, shares the ball, plays the game fast and hard but had a few too many TO’s because of his aggressiveness. Guys remember he was a freshman on a really good team and played significant minutes. My expectations for this year is for him to improve on his TO percentage say down to 15% and lead the team in steals per game average. An area I think we will see a significant improvement with him is the offensive end in long range shooting plus improve by building on his free throw percentage. We should remember the comments toward the end of last season from numerous broadcasters including Steve Lappas who made it very clear during his broadcast that the kid is special. I for one agree. I am so excited that we have a agood point guard over the next three years and maybe the next five with Thompson.
Now about Johnson. If he is to play meaningful minutes he has to be close to Butlers defensive skill sets as a freshman. If it is better then oh my that is a good problem to have and having two really point guards playing at the same time is going to wreck havoc on opposing teams. On offense I expect Thompson to be at or maybe better then Butler was in Butlers Freshman year. Will he share the ball and be a team guy, not sure. Is he talented, I would say yes. Do I expect him to start as a freshman, nope. Will he play significant minutes, yes depending on his defensive play.
Real excited with positions one to four over next year. My concern is as always is the five spot after Nathan and Joshua depart. I see D. Johnson more of a four and believe we have an opportunity in the post for a rim protector. So here we go for next year, can he play the five hole?

Like some of you, I've seen every game of the Fisher/Dutcher era. And I am more excited about this signing than Winston Shepard (one of my all-time favorite Aztecs) and Malik Pope. I predict that Johnson starts at PG next season. Butler may be beside him like Feagin to Flynn. This recruiting class is as good as any we've seen on the Mesa.
I'm very high on this year's team: I think it's better than last year's team. And next year's team won't skip a beat. Fisher and Dutcher have built a sustainable program and Johnson is the team's PG of the future.

As some had predicted Koren's friend Chris Bunch committed to the Orangemen not UW
Think the Brothers Johnson sang the song ' Stomp " if you are thinking of a song for the Aztecs Three Johnsons

Unfortunately he backs out of his commitment, reopening it back up. No word as to why.
