My main point of this thread is to encourage Aztec football fans to purchase their tickets to the Poinsettia Bowl (assuming our invitation) from SDSU's ticket allocation. Now, this is a little long, but hear me out:
I just read the book Death To The BCS, and it got me concerned about SDSU since we will be going to our first bowl game since 1998. The reason why I'm concerned is because I'd hate for SDSU to actually LOSE money, despite being accepted into a bowl game and receiving the payout money of $750K.
Does anyone know how many tickets our allocation is for? Last year's ticket allocation for the Poinsettia Bowl was 7,500. But in 2007, the ticket allocation was 10,000.
If SDSU's ticket allocation is 7,500, and let's say they have to pay the Poinsettia Bowl $35 per ticket, then they would have to pay $262,500! If the ticket allocation were to be 10,000 @ $35 per ticket, then it would increase to $350K! This is all assuming that the Poinsettia bowl sells the tickets to SDSU at $35.
Last year, when the Utes and Cal went to the Poinsettia Bowl, each only sold about 3-4K of the 7,500 allotment. Assuming each ticket was also $35 like my example above, that means each school ended up losing $122,500-157,500K before kickoff!
Coach Hoke already said they would stay at a hotel and do the same things they would do if they were bowling in another city/state, so SDSU won't be saving on travel expenditures.
And this is a football program that already LOST about $4-5 million/year before this year's bowl season. I'd hate for my alma mater to LOSE even more money by going to a medium-tier bowl game because of all the associated costs just to go bowling. It's a good thing that TCU will more than likely go to a BCS bowl game with a large payout that will be distributed throughout the MWC (it's too bad they're leaving). That would definitely help.
In conclusion, I'd love to trash the BCS altogether. But since I can't, the best I can do is to let other Aztecs know that it is in their and SDSU's best interest that they buy Poinsettia bowl tickets from the SDSU ticket office itself. That, and telling everyone you know to go to the game too!
Being at the game to cheer our team on is awesome, and it beats cheering for them at home watching on TV. But going to the game and buying tickets from Ticketmaster or StubHub doesn't help SDSU any. SDSU gets the payout regardless, but what good is that payout if they have to turn right around and pay the difference from unsold tickets?
