Just for those of us Men’s Basketball fans who don’t follow the recruiting side closely, over the next two classes who are Dutcher’s top 5 must have recruits?

I can say with some confidence these (5) players are top of the 2021 High School Class:
- Ty Washington 6'4" PG - Kaleb Washington 6'8" SF/PF - Glenn Taylor, Jr. 6'6" SF/SG - Demarshay Johnson 6'10" PF/C - Atiki Ally Atiki 6'11" C

FINALLY, a relevant basketball recruiting thread!! Hopefully we can keep this focused on only posts which directly relate to SDSU (i.e. interviews where they specifically mention SDSU, etc.).

We have 6 open spots for next year with no commits. Assuming an open one is left, there are still 5 spots to fill. Do we think any seniors are likely to stay another year? Even if one or two do, there are still many spots to fill.
Now that the season seems to be moving forward, when do we expect some of these recruits to commit? Most big basketball programs already have multiple commits. I’m just starting to get a “little” worried. Of course I do trust Dutch.

Nobody knows on here for a variety of reasons, most of all is we don't have a reporter that covers recruiting like we used to.

Dutch has said recruiting has been impacted everywhere because guys aren't being seen and they can't visit campuses. With the potential for a senior or 2 to return, the new transfer rule, and with 3 FR this year we may only see 1-2 HS recruits this year, if that. We've recruited extremely well year over year. This staff is outstanding when it comes to talent evaluation and acquisition. No worries.

It’s a shame last year’s team didn’t get an opportunity to play in the NCAA’s. The one thing that’s missing in the program’s legacy is a deep tournament run, like a Final Four or Championship appearance. If Coach Dutcher can manage a couple of these kind of runs, the program has the chance to turn the corner into blue blood territory. Of all the MW teams, only UNLV has that in their background, if the Aztecs can break through with a memorable run, they will be able to recruit with the big boys.

My big wish list for Christmas in this order: 1. Demarshay Johnson 6'10" PF 2. Christ Essandoko 7’ C 3. Atiki Ally Atiki 6'11" C 4. jamarion-sharp 7’ 2” C
I think we are set for next couple of years at the guard spots and SF. With the extra year don’t be surprised if Gomez comes back and maybe Pullman although I see Butler starting by mid season this year.

Making NCAA tourney's the majority of the time gets you good recruits, which we've seen. Making the final 4 gets you top 30-50 recruits. When Zags hit the final 4 in '17 they went from getting great Euro's/top 100 talent to top 50 to now top 15-20 recruits. They're slightly different in that basketball is their football, they invest a ton into the sport, including having their own plane, & recruits are virtually assured of a NCAA berth if they go there given that conference. But if we can get close.....

Not Aztec specific, but along the lines of the impact of the new rules on recruiting, there's a great Q&A in the TheAthletic with those with subs. Here's 1 question relating to recruiting HS players vs. going bigger in the transfer market:
____________
With the extra year of eligibility combined with the possible ability to transfer and not sit out a year, are coaches thinking on focusing more on experienced players than current unknowns with HS seniors? — Dan. L.
Absolutely. We already saw this happen this spring and summer, in which the transfer market was more competitive than ever. That should only accelerate, now that there will be no questions about whether a transfer will be immediately eligible.
Here’s the calculus for coaches: Do you want to take a high school kid who you didn’t get to evaluate in person for the past year and who might turn into a star? Or do you want to take a guy who has shown what he can do at the D1 level the past two or three years and is already physically and emotionally mature? That’s an easy call, especially because many high school players might not get full high school or travel seasons again in 2021. And a transfer is probably less likely to transfer again (and have to sit out a year) than a high school kid is to leave after a couple of years.

It's going to be an interesting 8 months or so, but 1 thing we do know is we usually have a lot of great talent. Now if we can ever get them to stay healthy for the full year....

This, they have no idea right now how many seniors will be back next year... Assume that some could possibly use the additional year and grad transfer out; Pullman, Mitchell, Schakel Fair... I expect Mitchell and Shakel to leave for professional careers, the rest could come back and a few could use the extra year at another school. Terrell at 5’8” could very well be back... Trey as well would be a strong contender to come back... Joshua Tomiac we have no idea how he will play and whether or not he would be a candidate to return.

I see no reason to worry about those guys transferring out too.

All I am saying is that, there's almost nothing that you can't count on when it comes to the additional year, and the one time player exemptions on transfers.
