Oldie Out Any idea why the cross bracing supports "top half" on East side is black and the West is white? (i know a little OCD, but those things were my job, sorry)

Oldie Out Any idea why the cross bracing supports "top half" on East side is black and the West is white? (i know a little OCD, but those things were my job, sorry) My guess is since the bracing that is painted white will be supporting concrete and thus will be hidden they use the white paint which I’m guessing has more durable properties whereas the black parts will not be hidden by the concrete and so those will fit the desired color scheme of the stadium. There is unevenness between both sides because the side with our luxury suites is self supported but the visitor side has the incline the entire way so you need those painted supports

Pretty sweet photo from last night. My wife's from upstate NY (Oswego, near Syracuse) but she's been living in CA since the late 70s - she said Monday's storm was the first time since moving to CA that she truly felt like she was back in her home town. We had one super close bolt/thunderclap that rocked the neighborhood big time (off of 54th/near campus).

Pretty much everyone got a taste of it. It was, for the most part, lots of fun.

Sure wish Ernie was still around to take some of these photos. He would of loved it! Ernie posted on here that the lighting at The Q posed unique challenges for decent sports photography. Dark as Gotham. They should name the new stadium lighting system for him.

News Flash: right now (9:14 AM), there's a pumper truck sucking out all the waste from the porta potties. I don't want the rest of you to miss out on the excitement.

Dark as Gotham. They should name the new stadium lighting system for him. That's odd because Ernie also shot a lot of film in Aztec Bowl. Talk about low lighting. Also, I remember a TV commercial right about the time San Diego Stadium was opening by Sylvania (I think if was Sylvania) that opened with a medium close up of announcer extolling the wonderful lighting provided by Sylvania in the new stadium. It looked like mid day on the field. Then a helicopter camera pulled away and from above you could see it was night time. The idea was that even a night the Sylvania lighting made it bright as day.
I know the lighting was replaced at least once over the 50 years the stadium was open. Maybe the City was using lower wattage blubs in the later years.

Unsure. I'll see if I can search it out on here. It may have been a "dark uniforms-dark blue seats-night games" combo thing.

He'd know how the lighting was affecting his photography. I wonder if it's because he was shooting with faster shutter speeds and longer focal length lenses in the later years. Either of those things would need brighter lighting.
It certainly never affected the quality of Ernie's photographs, IMO.

Short detour while I continue to search... I checked my message box first and came away with this funny note from Ernie after the classic "Scared money don't make no money" game at Nevada about 9 years ago. He's commenting about a sequence of shots I took from the stands on the winning play. Apparently, he would take The Q over Nevada's Mackay Stadium, though for different reasons altogether... Thanks for sharing, Mike. You got some great shots and I can see you got a little excited as the play progressed! Nevada was just the worst stadium to shoot in. I was hassled relentlessly by sideline Nazis and the biggest problem was I couldn't shoot from the endzone where I normally would have been for the two point conversion try (check out your photos and you'll see the stands go right up to the endzone edge and they wouldn't let any photographers in there. So, I got screened out of that play...but I love your sequence and celebration shots! ERNIE
