What down to Petco tonight to catch some action. Some quick observations...
Trent Grisham is going to be very good. Lined a rocket single to leadoff the game, then made a stellar catch in center on the other side.
Wil Myers looks locked in. Launched a DEEP home run to left, drew a walk and just looks confident at the dish.
Manny Machado missed a home run by about 4 feet to the right field porch cutout area. Made a couple of nice defensive plays as well.
Garrett Richards looked good. Offspeed stuff was filthy and caused a lot of ugly swings.
Jake Cronenworth looks like a player. Really barrels the ball and offers defensive versatility.
Cal Quantrill came in and struck out Tommy Pham, got the aforementioned deep flyout from Machado and got a Hosmer popup. Curveball that struck out Pham was A+.
No Tatis as mentioned in the other thread, so other guys got a chance to move around the infield. Jurickson Profar played his usual second and hit a booming triple to right.
We were kicked out in the bottom of the sixth, which was almost assuredly the last inning. Fun night at the ballpark.

How do you get in to watch? Thought they were closed to the general public.

How do you get in to watch? Thought they were closed to the general public. Park in the Park is open (for the moment) until dusk, so you can watch from there.

You can't see the whole field, but you can get enough to make it worthwhile. It might be the most we get this season. I enjoyed seeing BP and watching some different pieces in action.

Some more news and notes through the grapevine..
Ryan Weathers looks good...very good. He's estimated to have lost 15-20 pounds and was 95-97 on the gun on Sunday. If he can maintain the velo jump, he's a future big leaguer.
C.J. Abrams just continues to hit big league pitching. Drilled hits off Paddack and Lamet in the last couple outings. Oh, he's also extremely fast. He's likely the fastest player in the organization, top to bottom. A future star.
Joey Cantillo looked great Sunday in his couple innings of work. He's a large human being at the ripe age of 20. A fastball velocity jump in the future makes him a "guy", the changeup is already plus and the command is solid for such a late round find.
Franchy Cordero might be the odd man out in the outfield at this point. Largely struggled at the plate with his inability to stay off pitches out of the zone. He may become a casualty of too much talent around him. He does have options available to work with.

Remember though, these pitchers are simply working on things, so I wouldn't get too hyped up yet, on him getting hits off Paddack and Lamet at this stage.

He has elite plate skills in terms pitch recognition, the ability to read spin and, most importantly, to stay in the strike zone. He's an absolute future star if he stays healthy. The model projections on him are bordering on insanity - Perennial 5-6 WAR player with his ability to get on base, steal bases and impact the game in a variety of ways. He's been absolutely impressive since the day he debuted.

I was referring to your statement where you said that he's showing that he can hit big league pitching. It's not quite considered big league pitching until the later stages. It's not big league PITCHES yet.

If you don't know that these pitchers are still working on things, they're not in the best shape, and that no one knows if a rookie can hit big league pitching until the a nice test sample in the big leagues, then I don't know what to tell ya. These pitchers aren't at their best yet. I'm referring to your remark that C.J has PROVEN that he can hit major league pitching. That's simply flat out wrong for now. He can show great POTENTIAL that he will be able to hit big league pitching and has the talent to do so, but that's it for now. You don't PROVE things at this stage of the game.

They've split both teams up so one side is essentially top prospects (Abrams, Campusano, Trammell, etc) with a few big leaguers mixed in and the other team is mostly starting regulars. These pitchers have been throwing for months now, since the spring started. The season starts in 9 days. This isn't like offseason bullpen workouts, tinkering with mechanics and arm slots. Richards was throwing 96 when I was there last Friday. Nowhere did I say he has proven to hit big league pitching. I said "Abrams continues to hit big league pitching"....which has been the case since intrasquad workouts began, because I've seen it with my own eyes.

Ok, well I'm a big fan of his so I hope he's the catalyst that we need and he hits big league pitching when it counts. The pitchers arms aren't in great shape yet, obviously, and hitting 96 on the radar gun doesn't mean you're pitching well. I'm predicting a big year from them. I think the shortened season suits them fine. Happy to hear Price is not playing this year. That helps, though the Dodgers will still be tough.

Weathers and Paddack today. Weathers at 95 again on the gun. Optimistic that he can sustain that velocity, which gives him a mid-rotation type ceiling.

Ryan, your reports are appreciated.
It’s hard to believe we are actually going to have meaningful baseball in a few days.

I'm actually working on a piece today that I think some will enjoy about a Padre free agent signing post-draft. Great kid with a fascinating story. Exhibition game tonight, boys!
