What are you all going to be saying when Cade Alger becomes the next Justin Bean? Really hope he does and will eat crow if that happens. Would like his chances of that happening more if Alger was a) being recruited by several D1 programs after his junior year only to blow out his knee and hurt recruiting his senior year; b) took 2 years on a mission to mature into his body and heal; c) was offered a chance to walk on at a program like U of Utah instead of Seattle U; d) redshirted a year at SDSU learning the system as a 21-22 year old FR; and e) was in line to earn a scholarship by January of his 1st year playing as a RS FR like Bean. If he followed Bean's progression he may earn some PT by his RS JR year instead of his RS FR season. That'd be great if he has the patience, but most players want to know they'll get regular PT by then and will transfer somewhere which gives them a guarantee of that happening. Bean could wait, given he knew his role would grow as just a RS soph. I'd suggest we see where he is in 2 years before making comparisons to Bean.

The hope of him getting minutes obviously assumes he gains 20 lbs, grows another inch, is tough as nails, has a ridiculous work ethic, and agrees to the role of rebounder, defender and dirty work specialist ... it could happen.

Perhaps his experience @ Seattle U convinced him that he could play at a higher level with better players.
Give the lad a chance. And feed him some steaks and carbohydrates.

Work ethic will play a huge role in his progression. To me, the fact that he played 3 sports in high school suggests that he has a lot of room for growth if he focuses on his basketball skills. If he is a gym rat, he (I think) has the physical tools (crossover, handle, moves/plays like a guard but in a 6' 10" body) to get minutes in a couple of years. We also don't exactly know how much room for growth he has from a skill perspective, because we don't really know what his ceiling is (because he hasn't developed his skills as much because he played 3 sports in HS). To be fair, his ability to earn minutes assumes that he: a. puts in the hours before and after practice to improve his shooting percentage and post footwork b. has enough shooting skill to become a .750 free throw/.550 2 point/.350 3 point shooter c. adds muscle (and I don't think that he needs to add 30 pounds, he would be just fine at 220)

39 inch vertical for the young man. Rim protector? Rebounder? Scorer? 6'10" + 39" there could be a spot on the floor for the walk-on transfer.

Needs to hit the weight room and get on a see food diet. Aside from building strength he has good handles, agile with the ball and is not a stiff. He’s a injury or two away from getting minutes. His ball skills look a little bit like Wetzell, not the same body thickness but a win for him in that he will improve and even if he transfers later he will likely get a scholarship offer with playing time at D2 or low level D1.

Stan, What do you think, can he play the 5?

He'll be a great scout team contributor, and will be fun seeing him play mop up minutes this year while serving as an emergency replacement (5th string) in case of injuries in the middle.
