I thought they played fine. They’d shoot great for 5 mins and then couldn’t hit a thing for the next five mins, this will happen. There was never any question on who the superior team was or who would win the game.
Great to see Matt Mitchell play well and really be under control. LIU is not a great team, but they are picked to win their conference albeit the NEC. Let’s not forget how we’ve stubbed our toes against teams like this in recent years...

On a side note at the game looking down on the bench was Senior #12 Nolan Narain. 4 yrs of sitting on the bench just being a fan like us I guess but with the best seat in the house, wondering what could have been. Then I get home and there's a poster on my wall of the 2015-16 team centered around Winston Shepard are Trey Kell, Malik Pope, Dakari Allen, Skylar Spencer who after stints in the G League most are playing around Europe somewhere. Then down on the left corner is Nolan Narain. I know there were glimpses of promise but alas does anyone know what happened to him over 4 yrs. Yeah, I would really like to know what's up with NN. With Joel getting minutes that would go to NN...either NN has an injury that just refuses to heal, or Joel is just looking better in practice at this point. It's good for Joel's development, but...

I’m guessing it’s just as simple as Joel looking better in practice and just being the better player overall.

I was surprised to see we got seven offensive rebounds. It looked like we hardly competed on the offensive glass. The numbers I found troubling were: -- they got 12 second-chance points, we had three; -- they had 20 fast-break points, we had 12. We didn't shoot too well until late, but that happens. Putting Mitchell at the FT line broke the game open. LIU appeared to be very well coached but didn't have our size and strength. We will need to shoot exceptionally well in Vegas because we'll be facing two teams that can match us physically. Cherry picking the bad stuff. Why no mention of points off turnovers? Yes, just mentioning some areas that didn't go so well. Nice to win by 17 when you still have things to improve upon, but the competition gets more serious next week.

LIU's offensive strategy was to beat their man off the dribble, drive to the rim, then shot or kick for a 3 ball, or get fouled. Their guards were very quick and had great dribbling skills, the crossover. Driving into a defensive man and throwing up a shot worked well the entire game. LIU's defensive was a 2-3 zone, morphing into a 3-2 depending who the Aztecs were playing. For some reason in the 2nd half they left foul line area unguarded and MM just torched them.
We did stop using the spin move close to the basket as anytime we used the spin an LIU player would flop and we got called for charging. The poor officiating added to our frustration. A flopping warning was only given once in the 1st half and none the rest of the game.
LIU's rebounding advantage came about for 2 reasons. The first was because of our poor shooting, the 2nd was because that all the long rebounds from missed 3's, both theirs and ours seem to fall right into the hands of the LIU players. That seems to happen when there is a poor energy level. Which I thought was evident in the 1st half. Even my wife commented to me in the 1st half. Her comment, "they look tired".
Beside MM and his shooting the other star of the game in my mind was Pulium. He played with calm, distributed the ball, hit a couple of floaters in the lane, which is his game, and he played good defense, kept his man in front of him and didn't get beat off the dribble.
All in all a good game for the Aztecs, they faced some adversity, poor shooting, poor foul shooting, out rebounded, low energy level, and foul problems. They over came those problems, fought their way through to a 17 point win. BTW Vegas had the Aztecs as 19 point favorites, so almost covered the spread. How those bookies do it week after week is amazing. Those bettors taking the Sharks are happy campers this A.M.

Interesting state line is minutes played:
Flynn Yanni Mitchell Feagin Schakel
Near 30 minutes played
Pullman Menshah
19 and 17 minutes played
Arop had 10
I think as the season progresses Dutch will stick with this 8 man rotation.

For the most part they are using a statistical model to come up with the line and then adjusting before the game to attempt to get 50% of the money on each side. If you know enough about basketball you can look at the team’s respective KenPom rankings and come within 2 points of the opening line. I can predict now that the opening line against Tennessee St will be between -19.5 to -21.5.

The Aztecs weren't outrebounded, if you understand rebounding percentages. It was a stalemate.
Biggest reason it was a stalemate is that Aztecs did not crash O boards hard. This was on purpose- to prevent LIU runouts, because that is how LIU wants to play.

Relieved when Flynn finally hit a couple threes but not sure of his shot yet, especially at the line. He was 2-4, including a miss on the front end of a 1 and 1. He looks really frustrated out there but I assume it will come. Loved Trey at the point, two nice baskets and 7(!!!) assists. I was a little shocked when Joel M was put in when the game was still relatively close but he then proceeded to hit three shots in a row from about the same spot in front of the foul line. Got a couple rebounds and a dunk too. Joel is still learning the game, like Nathan. Only Joel is further behind in his development. But it looks to me like he gained an entire year over the summer. He's playing like I thought he would by his Junior year. Very good to see.

good win over a scrappy team. is this the 5th game a different Aztec stood up and took over the game? one thing the mountain west will be noted for is the quality of it's ref's. It looks like we may be the type of team coaches hate to prepare for. You have to pick your poison. Byu tried double teaming in the post and we got them with outside shots. USD defended the outside shots and didn't double team the post. Our bigs went wild. Last night we played a full time zone defense for the first time and, after getting used to it, were able to find the open player at the free throw line. Exciting season ahead.

Per Zeigler in the UT . The team spent longer then usual in the locker room at half time . Coaches needed to talk with the team about their energy level . Per Matt M We started the game with a low energy level . We weren't fully bought into the game . Coach came into the locker room and coaches told us we needed to pick up the energy level . Need to rebound better , play better on defense . Dutcher said he did not get into them but maybe an assistants may have had something or two to say about the way we were playing . Need to defend without fouling and be able to dissect a zone defense .
LIU showed that a team may not need to score a lot of baskets if you can get to the FT line . Drive towards the baskets look for the open guy or draw the foul.. SDSU shot 4 FT and LIU 17 . Another reason game was close Malachi had a tough night scoring in the first half . Also important to make FT's when you do go to FT line .
Dutcher did make some adjustments on both Defense and Offense . There was disappointment that we got out rebounded on both ends of the court. There are definite teachable moments for the team to go over at practice .
Does show what happens if you come into a game and play with less energy then we need to play . Have a good team when we play together with full energy but if not it can be trouble .
