LIU is not going to be playing into March, but for Aztecs' purposes, I think they were a fine opponent tonight. Just enough of a presence that they kept themselves in the game until the last 10 minutes or so. Too many fouls called on both sides, the refs were worthless tonight. Both coaches were giving them gas. Surprised no one got T'd up - at one point, I think it was Flynn, the ball got fired from the LIU side all the way to the Aztecs baseline after a foul. No T. So they called some really stupid fouls, and let some really obvious ones slide. Worthless. Bill Clinton and David Hall couldn't have done much worse. LOL

Well that game shows you how important intensity is. LIU played hard with good energy. SDSU not as much. But on the bright side, we move the ball around really well and have a lot of players that can score.
Flynn didn't shoot well (until the very end), but had 10 assists and no turn overs. Mitchell isn't starting, but has consistently been in at the end when it counts, and lead all scores today. Wetzell looked solid again today, if he can continue to build on that, look out... I also liked Pulliam's minutes, doesn't look like anyone can stay in front of him...
I'll take a 17 point win any day!
Go Aztecs

Looking only at the stats... Looks like the Big Pretzel and Matt played well... and 7 assists for Trey! Anyone provide additional color? They played a saggy zone all game. Early first half we couldn’t hit a shot. Offense was disjointed against it like we’ve seen in the past, I had flashbacks that made me feel like i had ptsd. Over five minutes in we had four points. Middle of the first half we caught fire. Everyone’s hitting their shots, that happened to be wide open because LIU is bad at basketball. Jumped out to a 13 point lead (24-11 run). End of the first half LIU went four minutes without a field goal but cut the lead to 4 because we went cold again and they were put on the foul line every time down the floor. Some valid calls, some more not so valid calls. Early second half looked like we were in for a Brown fiasco. 6 point halftime lead bounced to 5, then 10, then 4, then 12, etc. They’d get a couple, wed get a couple. Where recent Aztec teams would have given them the lead right here, we did just enough to hold off four or five pushes and never gave it up. Middle and towards the end of second half we played them basically even. Held them at 10-11 points, just playing like garbage. Missing shots, they’d hit a contested three or two, Matt made a bunch of wide open midrange elbow jumpers to push it back out. To finish it off Flynn and Jordan found their shot and hit a few that they were missing all game. Lead ballooned to high teens. just to add a little... We finally realized they were leaving the high post wide open in their zone and weren't even coming up to contest a jumper if we got the ball there, so instead of putting Yanni/Mensah at the high post we decided to put Mitchell there and then it was game over since he can (and did) hit that jumper all day long

good win over a scrappy team. is this the 5th game a different Aztec stood up and took over the game? one thing the mountain west will be noted for is the quality of it's ref's.

We played well offensively, but couldn't hit a shot. We missed so many wide open looks...I know Flynn and Feagin want to prove things, but they need to relax and just play. Also, Nathan was MIA around the glass and missed a couple chippies. Mitchell played great and Pulliam kept the team under control. Offensively, we will be fine. We have a lot of options and if we move the ball side to side, we will get good looks. Once Nathan finds a rhythm with his baby hook in the lane and his short jumper, we will be a tough team to handle.
But this team's main flaw is we foul way too much. You cannot continue to give teams 25-35 free throws a game. Pressure D is great but fouling negates its effectiveness. We are good enough that we could play straight up defense without high ball pressure and not foul so much. All of our guys are guilty of reaching and grabbing.....refs are going to call it even if its iffy. We need to funnel the drivers to Nathan and Yanni, and those guys need to stay strong. If we can get the fouling under control, we will start dominating teams from start to finish.

Also, we had 32 made field goals and 26 assists with only 6 turnovers. That's wild

I was surprised to see we got seven offensive rebounds. It looked like we hardly competed on the offensive glass. The numbers I found troubling were:
-- they got 12 second-chance points, we had three;
-- they had 20 fast-break points, we had 12.
We didn't shoot too well until late, but that happens. Putting Mitchell at the FT line broke the game open.
LIU appeared to be very well coached but didn't have our size and strength.
We will need to shoot exceptionally well in Vegas because we'll be facing two teams that can match us physically.

Just got back from the game. Great showing by a tidal wave of talent off the bench. Subs just kept coming and coming and the talent on the court remained incredibly high. I love this team that Dutcher has put together. I’m really confused however, Wetzell had a great game but everyone around me kept yelling ‘Laurel’ when he scored. Very odd 🤔

... Also, Nathan was MIA around the glass ... Huh?!? Nathan led the team with 7 rebounds. Hardly "MIA"... And if you consider that he only played 17 minutes, he'd almost certainly have double digit rebounds with his normal floor time.

I use to get so frustrated watching Winston get that same look and fail to convert....Hell, he would often double clutch that wide open 15 footer or kick it out to someone contested..... This years team may be our best ever offensive team?

Dutcher really needs to tell Flynn to calm down. His first instinct most times he has the ball is to just shoot right away.

First instinct? Nope. He would much rather drive or create.
10 assists and 0 turnovers.
But he is also a scorer, so he is going to shoot open threes in rhythm. He will miss some, he's not a robot.

On a side note at the game looking down on the bench was Senior #12 Nolan Narain. 4 yrs of sitting on the bench just being a fan like us I guess but with the best seat in the house, wondering what could have been.
Then I get home and there's a poster on my wall of the 2015-16 team centered around Winston Shepard are Trey Kell, Malik Pope, Dakari Allen, Skylar Spencer who after stints in the G League most are playing around Europe somewhere. Then down on the left corner is Nolan Narain. I know there were glimpses of promise but alas does anyone know what happened to him over 4 yrs.
