It was a Huge Historical win over ASU for a few reasons. First, we were 0-10-1 against these Devils before last night, and so we earned our first win. Second, as have been mention in other threads here it was our first technically against a PAC 12 team on the road.(since the PAC12 has organized) Third, it was our first victory on the road against any P5 team in a while. Fourth, may be you haven't been paying real close attention, but if you noticed we benefitted from three major close/review calls last night which we usually lost in the past. The first was the punt by ASU to Truxton where they thought he muffed the ball, and they recovered it, and took it in for a TD. It took some time on review for the refs to check it out carefully. But, you would notice on the camera view from the back he went down with his arm on top of the ball & the ball on the ground. Even though the ball came loose since you cannot have the ground cause a fumble it is automatically dead at that spot where he was, and it is Aztec ball. If, the call went their way then the score they made would have counted, and tied it up at 14-14. Many ASU fans didn't like that call & thought the refs got it wrong, or were cheating. They just didn't know the rules very well. The second call we got was when their own QB coughed up the ball while trying to run for a first down. He fumbled before his knees hit the ground, we recovered the ball, and that was that. ASU fans thought his knee was down before he fumbled, but replay proved otherwise. Aztec ball again. The third call we got was close also, but replay proved once again the refs had it right. That was when their receiver (Harry, or Humphrey) made what looked like a great catch near the sidelines for a first down. The refs reviewed it after it was called incomplete by one. It showed the ball in his hands, but not under control, and he didn't completely get the ball under control and stopped until he was sitting on his back out of bounds. No catch, and no first down. Aztecs win again. So, if nothing else we are gaining ground positively on things which use to hold or hamper us in the past. Is it because we are a better football team? May Be, but with this team's attitude, and determination it seems like even trouble doesn't hold us back so much! They overcome & fight on!

Liked your recap I thought we would lose every one of those calls ......gotta hand it to the PAC 12 officials.
Only one call got to me..... the pass interference call that negated a touchdown

Say what you will about ASU this season, this is still a huge win for the Aztecs. The first road victory over a Pac 12 team (in their stadium) and the first time the Aztecs have ever beaten the Sundevils! Congrats to Coach Long and Rashaad Penny! And all of the other coaches and players, too! Well done, Aztecs! Well done!! Before I chime in with my two cents I want to give a shout to my favorite book, whatever games were on, there was always a screen dedicated to Irma and it was a topic of conversation throughout the days and nights. Back in the day, when I did road trips, it was a given, these were type of games the Aztec would lose....it was just a given. The experience evolved to nothing more than spending time with good friends and alumni. Yes, this was a good win for the Aztecs, (and for me), but yes, the reality is, SDSU can join Minnesota and Houston as the programs that defeated Pac-12 programs that currently suck. The fact that it's is such a big deal is a reflection of just how low the bar has been for Aztec football for years. (The BSU loss against a good WSU team was a pisser). That said, the optics of such a win could generate even more interest in the next home game. Dare to dream, a crowd of some 50 grand, given the opponent, would be a first since, I do believe, I was a student such a LONG time ago. That, in itself, would be huge. Though I'd be hard pressed to bet against Stanford this week, (they're an angry team right now), I wouldn't necessarily deny a win for the Aztecs. It appears the 2017 edition could be really good, (though one game at a time). And while I didn't think a win against ASU would make or break the program, (again, see suck), I don't think a loss to Stanford will either. But a win?.... And for the record, though the Chargers are history, still can't help to break a smile when Jughead, (Archie's son), takes a dump. .

Disagree with your opinion that our DBs were very good. Yes, we should have won by more, but our DBs were getting beat, especially deep, whether those balls were caught or not. Fortunately, we started getting more pressure on their QB in the second half. Anyway, if ASU's WRs are "outstanding" as you claim, I wonder how good Stanford's are. While Stanford is a better team they don't have better receivers than ASU. Well then, I expect our DBs to pick it up and play a little better.

The Oregon State in Portland started out with them staying welcome to the Pac 10. We hit them with a touch down and said welcome to the PCAA. The Stadium was minor league and I could not believe what a joke Oregon State looked in that game. It was then we knew we could play with the big boys. We lost that ability until Rocky came on board.
Know one can could out coach Don Coryell. I now believe that with Rocky. We will not lose games due to being out coached.

This was a great win. Penney was a powerhouse. He was personally responsible for 70+% of our offense. He's been waiting to get touches, as Senior he isn't going let the opportunity slip through his fingers. This is the kind of win that I wanted to see. If we are good, we should beat the lower rung of P5 schools. We didn't let the biased officiating stop us.

My memory of that game in Portland was it was played on a AstroTurf field marked for soccer. As you'll Recall the Aztec head coach by 1975 was Claude .

After finally getting to watch the game on TV, I thought the refs were totally trying to screw us. The three calls to me that were absolutely terrible was the gift first down they gave them in the first half. The sideline judge stands there with her foot a good yard behind the first down and just motions for them to move the chains, no measurement just a judgment call that definitely that should not have been made. The second call was the no call on the late hit on Chapman when he slid. The announcer kept saying its a late slide, never heard of that terminology before but believe if we hit Wilkins like that there would have been 6 flags thrown. The final one was the 3-37 conversion where Ron is helpless, yes it was a perfectly thrown ball but it is so clear that he was pushed off on.
