Thank you Steve. Always classy, always kept emotions in check and did things right despite how competitive and cut-throat college basketball can be.
I have to admit the timing feels all wrong though. Next years team is flush with Seniors and going out on a very sour note. I am sure this decision was influenced by personal factors, but it just feels like next year would have been vastly superior on all accounts.

Thank you Coach Fisher! When you were hired, I knew great things were going to happen.
Thank you for bringing San Diego State University men's basketball to national prominence.

Could the past couple of months been more of a downer for SDSU and interested alumni? Soccer City with no plan for expansion, the university president signs on with another school, doesn't make one sound about soccer city and the football program, stadium or expansion,(SDSU West). The basketball team with a not very good season, the retirement of Coach Fisher.
Maybe it is better to happen all at once, or would a slow ride into obscurity be better? Can Dutcher bring back some magic to the basketball program? With Pope returning and a new point guard there is hope to climb back to the top of the Mountain Goat conference. Can we keep our players or will we become New Mexico?
Will the university get a fair shake on the Mission Valley land grab?
Man for a few years there the Aztecs were really doing a great job of being a two sport titan. I hope we can get back to those days of two sport champions before I take "the dirt nap".
This has turned into a sad day.
Thanks Coach Fisher for putting us on the NCAA basketball map and all the excitement you brought at the arena. A couple of years ago we won the conference title with a brilliant defensive change and an arena so loud it made my ears bleed.
Just thanks coach!

Steve Fisher was to Aztec BB what Don Coryell was to Aztec FB. Two great coaches that we can be proud of as long as we live. Coach deserves the rest of his time on this earth to enjoy his family and to not be concerned with meeting outlandish expectations. Hope this next period of time turns out to be his most cherished. Best to his family, and hoping that a cure for ALS is found forthwith.
Will never forget this - celebrating on the floor at the T&M in 2002, slapping hands with Fish as he happily uttered, "How 'bout them Aztecs?"

Congratulations to Coach Steve Fisher! From the day he was introduced and told us his vision for AZTEC BB (Lucky I was there!) until today this has been one great ride! There were ups and downs along the way but Steve brought life to a near dead program and filled the arena. This is a sad day for us but a happy one for him and his wonderful family! I knew this day would come, all I can say is: Thanks Coach!

Congratulations, indeed, to Coach Fisher on a PHENOMENAL career and an amazing job of building a program at SDSU that no one believed could be built.
Coach Fisher brought this team to the NCAA Sweet 16 twice. I don't think we would have gotten past the first round without him.
As exciting as it is to see just what Coach Dutcher can bring to the program it is sad (and a little scary) to lose a coach of the caliber of Steve Fisher. I don't think there has ever been a coach with more class than Steve Fisher.

I've been wanting to comment on Coach Fisher's retirement announcement, but I am really at a loss for words and sick to my stomach. I know it's not completely unexpected. We knew it was going to happen sometime in the next very few years. It's still a kick in the gut anyway. Your comparison between Don Coryell and Steve Fisher is right on target. Two of the greatest coaches ever in any sport. But there are lots of great coaches I wouldn't let take care of my worst enemy's dog. More important that being great coaches, these two were great men. Always humble. Always cared more for their players than themselves. Always operated the program like it should be. I'm proud to have been associated with both of them. Enjoy your retirement Coach Fisher.

Thanks Fish! The Aztecs will miss you. I appreciate everything you did for this program and will miss you being on the sidelines.
I have no idea what will happen going forward with this program but some of the folks who are thankful for his time here but who are also pleased with him retiring may not be so happy a few years from now.

Just a tremendous human being and a great coach. Proud of his time here at SDSU and thankful for all he's done for our school, community, and basketball program.
You're the best, Coach.

Wish he could have gone out in a better way. I think Fisher saw the writing on the wall when some of his players started to tune him out during the season. Why put up with that at his age. He doesn't need it and knows that he can trust coach Dutcher to take care of business.
Thanks for the memories and for elevating the basketball program from irrelevancy into a West Coast power.

Odds are that this is bad for recruiting...but I can't fault the guy. Thanks for what you've done for SDSU Basketball!!!
Or it could be the exact opposite. Opposing coaches have certainly been using Coach Fisher's job status against the Aztecs - (telling recruits that Coach Fisher may not be around much longer).
Recruiting has not gone real well the past two years, (mainly thanks to lies from A-hole Gary Parrish). Maybe recruiting will go better the next couple of years.
A HUGE thank you to Coach Fisher for building the program from the ground floor - and good luck to Coach Dutcher!!

There are probably a bunch of coaches in the MWC who are breathing a sigh of relief. Absolutely. Fisher won more than a few of those "under 5 with a lead" with his coaching ability and understanding of the game. I know Dutch will handle these coachable moments just as well. the difference from the 2005 teams and before was not jacking up threes and forcing the ball inside while using the 30 second shot clock. patience was a key to a lot of wins and the 5-minute lead streak. I am all in for next season. good luck coach ditcher.

I shook coach fisher hand after we won the 2006 mwc title in Denver. sadly, they did not let us few Aztecs fans there on the court for after game celebration.

My favorite Coach Fisher Story: It was February of 2000, and Coach Fisher was in the middle of his first season at SDSU. The team was horrible, and he had just finished urging those of us that showed up to the Signing Day event to come on over to Cox Arena for the game. From about 30 fee away, I hollered out "Good luck tonight coach." He stopped in his tracks, walked directly over to me, and said "thank you very much young man. I really appreciate that." We then had a brief 2 minute conversation where he asked about me, where I was from, etc. That was classic Fisher.

With what the poor man must be going through with his son's illness, it's amazing that he could focus on his HC tasks at all. He's got the biggest challenge of his life, helping his son. We were very fortunate to have him. He has forever changed the basketball "culture" here. It's a damn shame, that a rodent of a reporter tried to ruin his name over a non-issue, "fake news".
