Just a gut feeling but I think there's a better chance of TJ becoming an Aztec than Stanback. I now agree with this. I think Stanback is waiting back on SAT test score before announcing for Stanford.
I do think things have changed a bit with TJ, I still think UCLA is very much in this, and all sides want to make it work, but there are rumors that TJ is worried that he won't have a starting spot when Bolden is there. Also we all want to discount them but he really loved there visit and Oregon is in this too.

At this point, I would love to have him, but not making a decision is really irritating. If he really wanted to be a Aztec he would have already committed to us. He knows we would welcome him with open arms, he's waiting on if he will get playing time now with UCLA. I think it might be time to turn the page on TJ. By that logic, if he really wanted to be a Bruin he would have already committed to UCLA. So I think we are still very strongly in the mix to get him. I hope you're right.....

"It was good," Leaf said about his visit. "I had a good time there." Leaf, who is also considering Oregon and San Diego State, said over time he's developed a strong bond with UCLA coach Steve Alford. "Me and coach Alford have a very good relationship," Leaf said. "It was good just getting to spend more time with him." "Not at this point," he said when asked if he'd decided on a decision date. "Just whenever I'm ready." Will he definitely decide during the early signing period? "I'm not even sure," Leaf repsonded. "Not going to rush anything." www.scout.com/college/basketball/recruiting/story/1603337-t-j-leaf-discusses-ucla-visit?s=12

Good news. I was afraid he might commit on the spot at UCLA.

This may take a while. Having de-committed already, he wants to be 100% certain he is making the right choice. If he wants a guarantee to become a starter, I can't imagine Fisher committing to that. Don't know about Alford or Altman.
I am curious. Why does ESPN have us recruiting Leaf, but not Stanback or Ayton, while Verbalcommits.com has us recruiting Stanback, but not Leaf or Ayton? I would have to think we have a strong interest in all 3.

Gonna be totally honest here, I don't want to recruit a player that needs an assurance that he will be a starter as a freshman. If that's what's going on with Leaf, then you have no choice but to pass on him. That's just not how it works in D1 sports, especially with Top 25 caliber teams. You need to have good team chemistry and if this rumor is true, it seems like he will only be a good teammate if he is getting his way.
If you are good enough, then have some confidence in your abilities and prove to the coaches (on the practice court) that you deserve to start. So what if he struggles a bit as a frosh or another player steps up the game? Fisher has to play the best guy for the team. Based on what I'm hearing about Leaf, he will not be willing to accept that (and wait for his time to come). Instead it appears he will become disgruntled and most likely transfer. We already saw some red flags with his brother and now with him by decommiting from Arizona.
If he wants a guaranteed starting spot as a freshman, then he should not pursue teams that have a chance to win a national championship - San Diego Christian may be a good option for him!

TJ Leaf is a really good player. Of course he wants big minutes during his freshman year. He will absolutely get that at SDSU.

Unless I'm wrong, nobody has heard anyone asking/demanding for starting minutes as a freshman. Not sure how this has morphed into Leaf looking like a spoiled basketball star. Of course, every kid wants to get as many minutes as they can but they're usually smart enough to realize that if they're not good enough they won't start. No one is giving him enough credit for having a Father that played college basketball and is a coach and also having a brother whose career didn't go the way most people anticipated it would. I would guess that he's got a much more realistic outlook on college athletics than most kids in the same situation. I also think Leaf would get a lot of minutes too, especially if Malik goes in the NBA draft.

Leaf is a Power Forward, Pope plays Small Forward. I hope TJ commits to SDSU and Pope stays. Imagine your 3 front court players all at 6'10"!

From the looks of things...I don't see Pope in a hurry to leave. The money will still be there. NBA isn't going out of business. In fact, the salary cap just went up. I don't know his background but doesn't seem like his family is in dire need of money. Hemsley, Pope, Leaf, Z is pretty nuts. Throw in a much improved Narain. Wow!

I have it at 80% SDSU 20% UCLA.The fact is he would play less at UCLA with the roster situation there and he wants to play.

Is it wrong to hope Stanback missed a 1-2 too many questions on his SAT & Bolden absolutely goes off against us in the scrimmage next week?
Would love to get BOTH these kids, but I'd be happy with either...

Idk this is a tough call but I think the longer he takes the better our chances, I also think we're not his first choice and he's waiting on ucla to see if they can guarantee him a starting job and minutes. As much as that is pretty lame, I'll take it lol. A top recruit picking us will open the door to that top 25 recruiting window that's been tough to crack. Our recruiting has improved tremendously over the years but we're still not going after top 25 talent except for the local ones. If signing leaf regardless of us not being his first choice or him demanding pt and starting position opens that window for us, I'll take it any day of the week. In fish we trust!
