B12 has announced their income has gone up from 220 million to 250 million . So about 25 million per school . Expansion: if 12 teams instead og 10, about 21 million , 14 teams about 18 million , 16 teams about 15.5 million . so if they expanded from 10 to 16 teams each school could lose up to 10 million dollars. So unless the TV net works would add 25 million dollars for each school added. the older schools would most likely receive less money , Bottom line Money .

Uh, again any expansion would involve a renegotiation of the contract. It's not about slicing the same pie in more pieces. Never has been. Never will be. More teams means more games meaning more money.

Believe the TV networks have a contract with the B12 for a number of years . So unless they choose to expand the contract and offer more Money ,they do not have to . So B12 could add teams but TV networks are not bound to carry more games or pay more unless they choose to do it . they have the leverage .

If the B12 presents a better conference both ESPN and FSN will WANT a new contract, and they would want expansion. Again, more inventory and the current contract is based on old inventory. They won't get more games or even a conference tournament for free. Expansion and a new contract go hand in hand.

Easiest way for the B12 to get more money is if they can have at least 1 team in the running for the college playoffs . That increases their value or if the Playoffs goes to 8 teams . and they have even more teams in the battle . Quality is more important to the networks not just adding another game or two a week . Maybe if the networks feel adding a team in TV markets that do not currently follow the B12 team would help , that is where SDSU or others schools could get a chance . But would guess the B12 would need to convince the Networks it is worth their while adding those teams and then pay the B12 at least 25 million for each team added . think they see how things play out this year , next year or even longer .

Though we may get irritated at ESPN, they have a knack for making money and not losing opportunities. If they come to feel that adding SDSU will bring more revenue, they'll make it happen. Right now, they obviously don't agree with our perception---OR there is some negotiation going on in the background. Our wish to come true.

The name of the game is MONEY and Leverage . The TV Networks have both . So until the B12 can land a team in the playoffs why would they want to give the conference more money . Adding more teams and games is not the answer for them it is Winning Play off teams . So first B12 needs to Win key games and get in the playoffs . Without more Money from the TV networks the B12 is not very likely to expand . BYU could assert it brings BYU nation of viewers , ESPN could say it would stop paying BYU TV network and just pay B12 if they are added , slide the money over to B12 . SDSU would need to prove it is worth 25 million more to Networks/ B12 for us to be included . Or can Cincy(do they have viewers or are they mostly Buckeye fans in Ohio) or BSU ( do they have a TV following -worth 25 million) ...... or other options . Would guess first concerns of the B12 are to get a team in the playoffs or work on expanding the playoffs to 8 and more MONEY and still only share 1/10 for each school rather then 1/12 , 1/14 or 1/16 if they expand .

The TV guys wield a lot of influence, to be sure, but I doubt that's the end of the argument. If enough of the Big-12 schools strenuously object to having to travel to San Diego (or for any other reason object to expansion), it's unlikely that a West Coast school will be added. Frankly, they have a pretty good deal going right now. Any change (i.e., expansion) would have to be very, very rewarding to justify taking a chance on a new arrangement. I suspect that the Big-12 leaders think that, right now, it ain't broken, why "fix" it.
I continue to think that SDSU's chances of joining a P5 conference are very, very, very small. We need to improve our programs in the context of our present conference, as unappealing as that conference may be.

The expansion of the B12 (or any conference) will always be 2 pronged ... adding a strong football program would increase a conferences RPI and that will affect SOS -- a huge consideration by the CFP committee. This would also affect the attractiveness of network partners in choosing games to air and how much to pay for it, not just in the new DMA, but in the existing media footprint of the conference too. Other things to consider would be the ability to fill a program schedule with kickoff times across multiple time zones -- if a network can keep eyeballs on them throughout the day, that could add value AND allow teams to keep regular kickoff times at home games instead of adjusting them to fit a networks' programming needs which could be a win-win for a conference. Sponsorship and advertising would also be interested in expansion candidates ... there is more than one way to affect a conferences revenue stream.
