A few years ago we had continual losing records, no bowls, no future and no hope.
Two years ago, for the very first time in a long time, we had seven wins and went to a bowl game.
Last year we had eight wins and went to a bowl game. We lost a lot of our talented Seniors.
This year, a "rebuilding" year, we were picked to finish fifth in our conference. We ended up winning our conference and getting nine wins.
This BYU game is what it is - we lost a game. They are 8-5, didn't win any kind of championship and are the best defense we ever faced - No. 2 in the country in fact.
So yeah - they won. Games are won and lost - but next year looks to have even better potential than this year.
Be proud - we did good.

Actually BYU was favored and definitely played a tougher schedule. Lost to Notre Dame by a field goal, clobbered Georgia Tech and defeated good Utah State team. But our season was a success. And the football program has improved significantly compared to the past 15 years.

After Ryan Katz was carried off the field and out for the year, I'm sure more than a few of us thought the season was over. Instead, the Aztecs treated their fans to the best season in recent memory.
The game was kind of what I expected. The refs put the Aztecs in a bad spot and Dingwell and the offense couldn't STEP UP and make plays.
Retool the offense and reload the defense. Hopefully one of the QBs, Morin, Jefferies or Dingwell can become the dynamic playmaker who will lead the Aztecs to more winning seasons.

Don't forget our schedule was one of the easiest in the nation. The Boise win is proof the team can be really good, but we will have far more to deal with next year and it has the potential for the wheels to fall off.

I agree with the OP. The season was a good one, especially after those early losses. It seemed then that the season was going to be a disaster.
That being said, next year the team needs more of a passing game. Don't get me wrong I like the ground and pound style, but you need some passing to open things up a bit. I'm still not sure if Dingwell is the answer. The team looks good for next season. I am optimistic.

What shows that the Aztecs have improved greatly since years before is the fact we're complaining about losing a BOWL game, and not about having another 4-8 or 3-9 season. In my opinion, the team is the most balanced OVERALL (offensively and defensively) in quite awhile. Before it was about the "Dark Side" D, but the offensive wasn't so great. Or back in the Marshall years, it was 40-points-a-game, but the defense couldn't do squat. The main issue throughout this entire season (and today) was the lack of a good passing game. Escobar is great and Lockett and Ruffin are good receivers, but today were too many drops. So what needs fixing with the receiving? Faster/bigger receivers? The offensive line needs to give Dingwell more time? Dingwell isn't going to put up Lindley stats, but his mobility easily prevented more than a few sacks. A lot of young players played this season, and that experience returning next season gives me good vibes about next year.

Also, I hope we don't stop playing BYU. SDSU should be good enough to not let any questionable referee call (or non-call) or whatever else prevent them from beating them. The Cougars flat out wanted this win more than the Aztecs and got it.

Yea it sucks we lost and its even worse that we lost to BYU.
But as a point of reference we are 26-13 in the last three years....on the radio on the way home they said it took us 80 games to win 26!
So we were 26 and 54 over like 9 years - F(*&Ng ugly. We lost and I am pissed (I had to leave the game at the end for fear of ending up in jail) but....things are getting much better. We aren't all the way there yet but I like where we are headed.

Driving back to L.A. from the game, this song came on and I thought it's definitely the theme song to Aztec football.

Once again the laughingstocks of CFB. Until the program can win these games recruiting will suffer and the Sky Show fireworks will be more important than AZTEC FB!)

Yes, the perspective of this thread is right on!
However.... this loss still, "Sucks Donkey Balls!!! ;D
'Nuff Said!!!
I want Rocky to take these Bowl games as seriously as he takes the season in the future. And I am tired of excuses for this program. Look at Men's BB - no excuses there at all!!!
All that said, I look forward to 2013 and sharing another exciting season ahead with I hope even more smiles than this one.
Finally...the silver lining is that this loss may make these spring practices coming up even more productive and motivating as this team tries to erase the sting of this bowl game loss!
We'll see! I remain hopeful!
