Lost their opener @ Kansas State. Not a bad loss, but we all know UCLA doesn't accept mediocrity.
I'd say he needs to go to a decent bowl this year, and win it. Beating USC would help as well.

Well his first season I think they were something like 4-8, then 7-5. They'd have to really take a $#!+ for them to gas him after three years. 7-5 doesn't cut it in Westwood, trust me. I'm hearing and reading alot of rumblings. If USC destroys them again this season and they dont win a bowl game....gone. |

And the UCLA recruiting classes have been ranked high. This is good commentary from y'all, good feedback....and I am a big fan of Rick's. Posters from the last board will recall I wanted him here when we hired Long. I'll re-phrase....Rick needs a good showing against USC, and a bowl win. Otherwise, he'll enter next season in hot water. As for "loving him", not sure who you mean, admin or fans but living in OC I am around many fans/alums who are skeptical. But quite a few are jackasses that don't realize what Dorrell left him. Just like SDSU in 2004 and 2005, UCLA has been trying to build an Offensive Line. The UCLA pass blocking two years ago was so bad that the time from snap to QB hit was the poorest in school history. For a school that has a reputation for having a good passing game, that was atrocious. It also cost them the loss of several Quarterbacks due to injury. The last thing you ever want to do as a QB is go to a school with a crappy offensive line. Kevin Craft was the QB who took all of those hits two years ago. The fact that he survived and was not killed had to have been a miracle. I guess he is tougher than he looks. Kevin's father was leaning on his going to play for June Jones, but I guess Rick Neuheisel tricked Kevin into thinking that there was an actual football team at UCLA. That was not a football team. It WAS a bunch of prima donna skill position players without a line to block for them. You don't win many football games with a line as poor as UCLA's was. |

At present, look at UCLA's offensive line, it looks like they have a pretty good one deep. I doubt that they have any depth. They have a lot of young kids on the two deep. What else can Rick Neuheisel do. You generally do not get a good product when you recruit the JC's for linemen. It is better to bring in the high school kids and wait for them to develop. Hopefully the AD knows what is happening. You can not turn a football team around in one or two seasons when the problem is in the line. It takes four or five years to grow them big enough and build their experience so they can stand up to the onslaught. It is a WAR in the trenches.

Things have really changed a great deal in the Pac-10 recently, and in Div I (FBS) generally. Look at the Oregon schools; it used to be that Oregon might be half way decent and Ore. St. lousy. Now both are very good (Ore. better, of course). Cal often stank; now they are solid if not spectacular. And that is not counting Washington, which should always be a power and may be inching back to that status. Arizona is looking good. (Why ASU has not done better over the years puzzles me.)
Finally you must remember that Utah is on board. I don't think they will eat up the Pac-10, but they should be nobody's patsy, either. Bottom line, it's not just USC and Washington that the Bruins must worry about.
Its like the baseball standings. If it's August and you are in second place and 8 or 10 games out of first, you have a shot. That first place team may falter and you may catch fire (e.g., The Dodgers and the Giants in 1951). On the other hand, if you are 8 or 10 games out and there are two other teams that are 4 to 6 games out of first, you have to jump over THREE teams to win, not just one. What are the chances that all three of the teams ahead of you will collapse all at the same time? Virtually zero!
For whatever reason, UCLA has declined since Donahue left. Actually, they are worse than when Toledo was the HC. Now they find that they are behind not just USC, but behind two or three other schools as well. And that does not figure in Utah, who will not be in the conference until 2011.
UCLA may again reach Top-25 or even Top-10 status, but it won't be easy. And it may not happen under Neuheisel. I don't think that he will get fired this year, not even if they win only 3 or 4 games. The natives will start getting very restless, however, and the pot will start to boil. If 2010 turns out to be a stinker for 'ole Rick, he will have to win big in 2011 or he'll be gone.
The close loss to K State hurt. UCLA could have used a win. Maybe their reluctance to schedule FCS schools is working against them. They should have learned something from K-State's tactic of playing a few patsies while the program was getting off the ground. Maybe UCLA should have scheduled their first game against UC Davis or Northern Arizona.

UCLA has 5 potential starting OL out with injury, academcially ineligible, or on mormon mission. Neuheisel is NOT on the hot seat because UCLA doesn't really care about their football team. He has recruited well so I think he will definitely back next year. However, if he does not start winning he could be on the hot seat and be fired next year.

Good ole Skippy - he's going to start this year 0-4, he'll have won 10 of his first 28 regular season games. Him and Chow are offensive minds, and QB gurus, correct? And through 3 years I haven't seen a team have worse qb play. F'em die slow

Yes, given the background and pedigree of Slick Rick, and Norm Chow, the dismal offense under their leadership has been surprising.
Of course, it starts upfront and when you can not block....well....we all know the rest.

Their linemen are just too stupid or incompetent to be able to pass block well. So, Norm Chow put in a run oriented offense that is now clicking. Imagine that, Norm, the guru of the passing game as originated by the Great Don Coryell is now the architect of a darn good running game. UCLA's pass blocking in the past two seasons was the worst in recorded history. Time to hit on the QB was the lowest of all of the major schools. That means your QB is being battered to death back there. To save this year's QB, UCLA had to change things. They realized that they could run block fairly well even if they broke down all of the time in the pass blocking. UCLA now runs with authority and passes off of the running threat. I never thought I would see that at UCLA with Norm as OC, but it is a reality. |
