Yes, given the background and pedigree of Slick Rick, and Norm Chow, the dismal offense under their leadership has been surprising. Of course, it starts upfront and when you can not block....well....we all know the rest. They had to completely revamp their offense. Their linemen are just too stupid or incompetent to be able to pass block well. So, Norm Chow put in a run oriented offense that is now clicking. Imagine that, Norm, the guru of the passing game as originated by the Great Don Coryell is now the architect of a darn good running game. UCLA's pass blocking in the past two seasons was the worst in recorded history. Time to hit on the QB was the lowest of all of the major schools. That means your QB is being battered to death back there. To save this year's QB, UCLA had to change things. They realized that they could run block fairly well even if they broke down all of the time in the pass blocking. UCLA now runs with authority and passes off of the running threat. I never thought I would see that at UCLA with Norm as OC, but it is a reality. Yeah, they're running that pistol offense that Nevada's using. Nevada is now in the top 25 for the first time since the fortys using that offense. Rick got together with Nevada's Coach Ault, who was very generous with his time in explaining how the offense works. And you're right, they needed to do something with that offense since they can't pass block, as well as Prince not being the most accurate passer around.

They damn near killed Kevin Craft with their pass blocking. In hindsight, Kevin should have gone to SMU. Where is he now?

He was like a sacrificial lamb out there, running for his life. In hindsight, SMU would have been good for him. On the bright side, at least he got a degree from UCLA. He may want to get into coaching.

Tom has had enough influence in his life for the time being, and a son has got to get out on his own for a few years.
