I hope you are kidding when you state that, " our (Aztecs) ultimate goal is not to start off strong, but finish strong." Dude if the Aztecs start off slow, weak or lose several games, you can forget about League, Tourney or NCAA bid! Aztecs cannot afford
to start off losing games and hope to finish strong.
Not certain if you have played a sport, but losing early season games when you have been picked to beat everbody up, can cause psychological damage! Its just like the Aztecs free-throw shooting woes last season. One player is a terrible free-throw shooter and then, every player on the team is a terrible free-throw shooter. Get it! Its psychological damage.
Once a team loses games early, players start to question them-
selves, Coaching staff and teammates. Personally, I would rather see Aztecs start off strong, kick butt and when as many games as possible before league play. This builds confidence and puts fear into their upcoming opponents! Sure, Aztecs could
finish strong like they did last season, win MWC Tourney and get a 14 seed in NCAA for reward!
However, should the Aztecs start off 10 straight wins against Gonzaga, Wichita State, Cal and et. al., stay strong during league
and win MWC Tourney, maybe Aztecs get a 4 or 5 seed for NCAA Tournament! Now, that would be nice. The Aztecs bigs are the critical piece for their success. White, Thomas and Leonard are set for the frontline. Carlwell should be first off the bench. If
healthy, Shelton should get limited minutes because of his basket
ball IQ and ability to shoot the 3 (stretch the defense). Medhi is
next in line and could spell White or Leonard. Williams has got to
show Coaches in practice that he can push the above-named players for playing time.
Last, but not least, you can be a great practice player. However,
when game time comes and the Arena lights come, practice player cannot perform. And it is a strange thing that a player can perform against teammates in practice, but cannot play squat in a game against his opponents! Strange, but true.
