Recall that GW Bush and a Republican Congress took Clinton's budget surpluses and made them into huge deficits -- and also managed to bring down the economy that Obama is trying to fix with some temporary expenditures. Or maybe you mean the $10 trillion cost, over the next ten years, of extending the Bush tax cuts?

The issue was that this money was supposed to expand the economy but, in reality, most of it went down or will go down into bureaucratic rat holes.

Many of the monies' targets were well-staffed public sector organizations who could swallow that pig of a money bag like an anaconda. No new jobs, just a bill for the next generation and a well fed Obama constituency. His government first attitude is obvious. Private sector business and individual tax breaks/incentives are avoided almost entirely.

The private sector is where new jobs make the economy expand. Make work jobs halt when the funding is gone. Example - did you see the loss of jobs when the Census was over? The same will be true for most of these programs. Its woeful.

Can you guess what area of the country has the lowest unemployment rate? That would be . . . drum roll, please! . . . Washington, D.C.! ! ! ! That's where the new jobs are being created.

Someone will flame me for saying this, but it has to be said. Barack Obama has done great harm to this country. Bush? A piker when it comes to damaging the Republic. Just look at Thor's list. My god, that is long! One might argue that this or that item on the list is money well spent. Possibly so. But the problem is the sheer number of them. We are getting to a point at which government, principally the Feds, will control well over half the GDP. Anybody care to defend that trend?

The bigger the government is, the less free are the people. Somehow that strikes me as antithetical to what the founding fathers had in mind. We have gone from "Live Free or Die!" to "What more can the government do for me?"

How's that second ethic working out in France, Spain, or Greece? What is the reaction of the people when the governments in those (and other) counties try to cut back on unrealistic promises of benefits for workers? Tell you what; go to Google, and enter "general strike France," "general strike Spain," or "general strike Greece" and you will find the answer to that question.

If it wasn't for the Dot.com boom, no war and a majority republican congress, there would have been no surplus. Clinton was just f**kin lucky. As it is , those surplus funds are the taxpayer's money, not governments. So to me the tax cuts were fair and a way to pay back our money thru govt. credits..
I simply believe in way less taxation and way small government. The real cancer in this country is the culture of entitlements and the federal govt. knows what's best for me. bull$#!+. There isn't a program government touches that turns to $#!+ thru waste and corruption. And what makes this worse is there is no accountability for such waste and corruption.
