In 2006 Bochy forced a dodger pitcher from the game by appealing to the umps that the manager visited the mound twice. The manager stepped outside the (dirt) mound area and back into it during a visit to the pitcher. Last night the same thing happened in a critical part of the game.
Dodger's all-star Closer, Broxton, had the bases loaded with one out in the 9th inning of a 5-4 Dodgers lead. Torre had been thrown out of the game so their backup manager made a visit to the pitcher. After he was done and stepped off the mound area he turned around and talked some more. Bochy appealed to the umps that it was a second visit and Broxton must be removed. The umps did and the next pitcher gave up a double to the next batter leading to a 7-5 Giants win.

If you don't like, then don't read it. Pretty simple concept. Sounds like you might be a bitter loser dodger fan. Maybe you could disappear like lath.

Hey pauncho, my first place Padres just won again in extra innings in Atlanta! My Padres never give up. I think this could be the year folks, that we make some noise in the post season... Everything just seems to be going our way this year.

It would be fantastic to go 4-2 on this road trip.

I don't mind you riding lath about the dodgers, but does it really have to be 50% of the posts that go up each day on this board?

Are you retarded sir or can you not read the rest of the board? Not kidding you at all. Compared to many of the posters on AztecMesa and formerly the several iterations of AztecTalk you are pretty newish. And if you want to get into reading comprehension, you could consider re-reading my post. I said that half the posts on the Padres board were you bagging on the Dodgers and calling out a guy (lath) who probably doesn't give a crap what you think. And yes, I know it isn't actually half the posts on this board, it's called hyperbole. I use it to make the point that it seems I can find one in every thread I open. And for the record: I mentioned Steve because he and I used to playfully rib each other over Dodger/Padre battles during the mid-decade (so, maybe 3 boards ago). I am a Padres fan, though I can see how my subtlety could be missed while you were busy jumping to conclusions.

And as far as the topic of this thread is actually concerned:
The umps messed a bunch of stuff up in this game. First: Broxton should have been allowed to face the hitter at the plate before having to leave the game. Second, the relief pitcher should have been allowed as many pitches as he required to warm up, rather than the customary 8 pitches relievers get from the mound.
Could this have changed the outcome of the game? Lots of couldas and maybes there. The situation was bases loaded with one out and a 1 run lead. A double play ends the game. Broxton could have gotten that, or even the first part of a pair of SOs, foul outs or even really short pop outs. Or his replacement, on proper warm up, might have had a better chance. But really it falls a little on Mattingly for not knowing the rules (either about leaving the mound or what should happen after) but even more on Torre for getting tossed and not being there to deal with it himself.
Also, as I recall, when this happened last time (with Bochy as a Padre) Brad Penny was on the mound and either refused to pitch to that hitter or argued so fiercely that he got tossed which removed his ability to pitch to that hitter.

I was not jumping to conclusions at all but just busting your balls. If your a real Padre fan like myself, enjoy the time we are in 1st place and the dodgers are losing. What a great combination, can't beat it! Couldn't be any better for a true Padre fan. And for lath, that douche likes to talk a lot of trash and when his team loses he disappears like Casper the friendly ghost. He has it coming to him.

Umpires make mistakes. That is why Bochy had to point out the obvious. The problem is that the Dodgers didn't do the same when the umpires miss applied the rules. Quoting the rules by the Dodgers would have kept Broxton in the game for that batter - but the Dodgers management failed to "know" the rule. And don't use the ejection as an excuse. The Dodgers manager was in communication and failed to "know" the rule like Bochy did.
