I hate emptying the backfield. You have to have a wonderful O line, because those D linemen lower their ears and come like crazy. Hang in there, Matt But on those occasions when we do, it's going to be pretty tough to match-up with our 5. ;D 1) Brown 2) Sampson 3) Umuolo 4) Sandifer 5) Hillman You would need some pretty solid defenders to handle a bunch like that.

True, but it's hard to hit them while lying on your back. Hang in there, Matt

True, but it's hard to hit them while lying on your back. Hang in there, Matt I prefer to envision 3 verticals with Sandifer and Hillman running crossing routes under the backers....first down Azzzztecs!

True, but it's hard to hit them while lying on your back. Hang in there, Matt This is the modern battle that became possible in a big part because of Coryell's vision: bring the house and risk the bomb, put more guys in coverage and see if you can cover long enough.

I wonder if there were discussions between Coryell and Gillman?

With a late lead I would not go conservative with my play calling in the hope of running down the clock with running plays, unless of course we have a lot better running game that we had a year ago. I'd try to devise a few plays each game that get the ball in Umuolo's hands with a little more space and I'd poke and prod the defense with screens and other plays that would take some of the pressure off of our offensive line. I'd be happy that I have some existing weapons at receiver and some promising weapons in the running game and mix them up as best I can to keep my strong-armed but not so mobile quarterback upright.

Good question DShaw. I think they should both be on the field at the same time as much as possible. Both players can play multiple positions on offense, which would make this very, very, possible and a nightmare for defenses. When I watch Ronnie Hillman on film, the thing that knocks me out is how well he catches the ball out of the back field. I remember us using Marshall in a slot and catching the ball a lot. That is how I envision the use of Ronnie Hillman. Ditto on Ruffin. Only he can play more spots even Hillman can. He can go as a wide receiver, slot, I formation back, wildcat. So many options. I don't know enough about offenses to know who should be where, but I do know enough about judging talent to say they both need to be in the game ASAP, and together as much as possible. Been thinking about your comments in regard to putting them both on the field at the same time, which makes perfect sense, but as we are talking about basically two true freshman here, I am wondering if splitting time would be the better path as they adjust to the D1 game. Looking forward to seeing how the Aztecs use all their many talented players this season.

Can we line up with 15 players on offense? Is that allowed?

Can we line up with 15 players on offense? Is that allowed? As long as at least 2 of the extra 4 are Olineman!
